I have been playing drums for a long long time ,,, and YOU KEITH CARLOCK are my Favorite drum soloist these days .......... You actually made me love drum solos again after burning out on them ,,, Thanks Man ! I Love You !!
@Drumguitarman Oh ,, now i play drums in BritBeat ( as Ringo Starr ) and The Attitudes ( drum solo ) . Thank-Yopu again for these awesome INSPIRING clips Keith !!!$!
This guy kills! At his age (I'm guessing late 30's) he's still getting better. He drives Steely Dan's band with perfect technique and precision! He plays killer yet very musical solos. And he's got the best snare ghost notes this side of David Garibaldi. He'll go down as an all time great!
fantastic, creative, original, melodic, you run out of adjectives with this cat.Does anyone else hear some John Bonham? Mitch Mitchell and Ginger Baker as well. This cat draws from the Great masters but manages Not to sound like a Copycat. UNREAL FEEL!!!
I first saw this guy at monterey Jazz festival in 2008 when he was playing fusion, walked into this old hall and hear Keith playing the most amazing drum solo I ever heard - best drummer I've ever seen live. Another great talent is Gerry Pantanzis who plays in melbourne, Australia - incredibly gifted drummer also.
I had the honor to play drums and graduate high school with Keith. He was amazing back then and still is. Most incredible, he has remained the most down to earth and humble guy! Rock on bro.....Ryan
Keith thinks on his feet. Even when he plays something he didn't mean to play, he makes something out of it that makes sense and keeps on going. He doesn't freak out over mistakes. I love his feel and his groove!
Keith is hands down the smoothest drummer around. his "feel" is perfect and his playing should show anyone that they can do anything you put your mind to. but to be real >>>this guy is a mutant and his soul is here to do just what hes doing.
4:54 the classic Carlock lick. always wanted to know how to do that. never heard anyone else play it like that either. Is it me or has he lost a lot of weight
@crossofthesphinx f.y.i. I;m not racist, I'm actually white, but I like to say that. I like to catch people out once in a while. Makes me and them feel alive.
...a perfect drummer. He does all the practice, has read all the books, but he forgets all that when he plays and just talks, It's that natural to him. He has it the right way around. Let technique be the tool to shape your voice, don't let technique become your voice.
@BlowDeBloodyDoorsOff Right on, mate. Most of todays "best" drummers solos are like very very strict practice moments. Soulless, collorless. But techniqually sublime, though. Keith is just making music that flow.
I like what you said about "don't let technique become your voice". It seems like it takes years and years of playing and studying an instrument until we truly know what that means.
@storefedekussesvin You bet! I've been practicing a lick he always does with doubles like that; going between snare, kick and swiping of the toms to the snare. It's really fun!!
@ngineer1965 This is what I am on about. Why do you want to sound like Keith? There's already a Keith Carlock out there. Watch the guy and admire him, but when you go to play your own kit, forget about him, be yourself!!! I know he's great, but that's not the point. If you can't find your own way to speak musically, then you don't have what it takes to be a player. it may take you years to find it, but you must keep trying.
@Markgr122 I was at this event, it was so surprising to see him come out and be like so thin when i expected him still to be chubby. In one solo he cut his hand and was like "Jeez, theres blood all over me brand new coated heads, damn it." hahaha
No you are correct it isn't the 'why' but is a great example of 'how', that's what I wrote. It was great to watch and I would love to see it again.
I don't want to get into a debate of the taxonomy of the terminology I would just like to watch it again. Sorry if the phrase 'finger drumming' offended you so much. Please accept my apology.
If you have it please post his opening with the finger drumming, its a great example of what makes him one of the most melodic and musical drummers out there today.

Absolutely right BlowDeBloody,
You can tell he has mastered Ted Reeds Syncopation (you can hear the exercises!) and Stick Control.
Keith is like Vinnie Coluaita in the sense that they are sooooo musical in their playing. Loved Keith with Steely Dan too.
KIDS: this is a drummer to aspire to!

Reminds me a lot of Johnny Raab. Maybe I should say Johnny Raab reminds me a lot of Keith.
Either way both are mutant.
