You say that like its some kind of insult. Do you happen to have a problem with homosexuals or are you a thirteen year old who has yet to figure out how to remove his head from his ass?
Finally, a progressive metal album that is actually progressive. Wonderful dynamism throughout, lush melodies punctuated with off-beat rhythms and jazz-tinged scales- plus, it doesn't take 70+ minutes to say what it has to say; this is what prog should be. The rest needs another home. One of the few albums that I could listen to on repeat.
@locustlimb cool, I'm also seeing them at Slims in San Francisco on July 23rd. I saw them last year. It was a great show. These guys are so damn talented.
Paul Masvidal says in some interviews that the lyrics are open for interpretation with that being the purpose. I once asked him if his spiritual beliefs tie into his songwriting and he replied "I believe all music is an expression of ones beliefs."
@nocheaterspleas While the lyrics are open, based on some interviews w/ Paul and the lyrics, I would say generally the song speaks of finding one's "purpose in life" finding one's own "space". At first he is not sure whether he can live up to the expectations of whatever the "space" is, seen in him by asking "Can/Will I be the space for this?". The "soft omens traced in air" may be signs or messages through life that give light to what exactly this space is. He still does not feel ready to "be"
the space for this, so to keep everything in perspective he remains "present" (breathe out, breathe in) and yet the space still seems impossible to fill/indentify (must I bend the sky to realize?) and eventually seems hopeless/pointless (a bundle of thoughts on a lonely ghost pursuit) as in he doesn't know who he is, what he is after. By constantly being "present" or "in the moment" (breathe in breathe out) he now realizes what the space is, and that he can/will/is now the space.
what was once impossible is now more than possible (I just bend the sky and realize). This song is so fucking powerful it is beyond words in its beauty and truth. It honestly moves me to tears whenever I truly pay attention and listen to it completely. Cynic's music is not of this material realm, it resides in the spiritual, the mystical, which may be why it resonates on such a profound level.
I just don't understand why this band came to my village, the performance hall they played has a maximum of only 700 ppl.XD House of Blues and that in 2 months.
No, don't try to emulate anyone. That's what Cynic is about, creating your OWN music. Inspiration is another thing though. We're all almost certainly inspired by other bands when we write music cause you can't just make your mind a blank paper. But it isn't the same thing as emulating another band. I'd recommend finding your own style as a musician.
Funny how a lot of people bitched about the relative lack of crazy basslines on this album, while more or less ignoring all the stuff Sean Malone does on this song.
@computeras2000 there are a handful of albums that will do this, this is definitely one of them, but there are a few others, they are scattered so thinly though. The only reason I know others is because I listen to many MANY different sub genres. This is the only one that I know of for prog. For Thrash/Death Metal there is Revocation, for Swing Metal there is Diablo Swing Orchestra. But this to small a number of bands, we are in a metal famine.

Really? See, I think Tymon's growls are weak; the death-ish vox on 'Focus' sounded better. Personally, I think they should ditch the heavier vox altogether.
bah theyre just people like you and me, a "mortal mind" what are you dungeons and dragons faggot? its a great song, absolutly fantastic but you sound like an idiot man.
He's being light-heartedly facetious, and calling him a "fagot" for praising a band you both enjoy is just childish and idiotic. Are you this spontaneously mouthy to people in real life, or only behind the safety of a computer screen?
I know many wouldn't believe this, but in all honesty, i have about 800 (maybe now 900) bought CDs in my collection...And out of all of them, Traced in Air is my favorite album. It is the most fucking, goddamn perfect album I could ever imagine. Every thing about it is fucking perfect! All 34 minutes of it.
Cynic is absolutely timeless and I was thrilled they *finally* did Traced In Air. If only a fraction of today's bands would have half of the talent and vision this band has, a lot more interesting music would come out. Metal is a fertile soil for experimentation and this is how it's supposed to be done: disregard trends and fuck whatever is the flavor of the month: just release intelligent, meaningful, heartfelt, timeless music. Sadly enough, Cynic is really in a league of their own...
Man I know. It's refreshing to hear something like this, something new and different. I'm glad a band decided to take a new route with metal and do something innovative. It's great stuff.

Absolutely fantastic song on a great album. It is both a progression from, and different to, Focus. Rare that any band produces an album this good, especially with the expectations they had after Focus.
Are the lyrics printed in the cd cover? I haven't been able to get my hands on it yet because it's not 'pre-packaged and marketable' as the assholes who wear suits to work every day need it to be to pay for their next need in life...
This would be so much better without his vocals. The vocals make it feel like Radiohead
