How do you know which ones to start with, the dark or the light colors? This is sooo amazing, im so impressed with your talent. How do you manage the colors? Do you study your subject before painting it, or does it just come along naturally? Thankss a Zillion
I mix up a number of colors in advance, checking the hue against the subject by holding my palette knife in the line of sight between my eye and the patch of color I'm matching. As far as the tones are concerned, I start with the easiest ones, of which i feel i know them for shure (eg black background). The white/yellow of the paksoi I want to be bright, but it still needs some color. So I mix the lightest possible value of that hue, and make the rest darker...
For the 'drawing' (monochrome) I use a large hog bristle (about 1 cm width). Then for the first application of large areas of color, I use one of those for each color (in this case black for the back, brown/yellow for the table, white and green for the vegetable). When the panel is filled with paint, I usually return to painting with a single brush (and clean it once in a while). In later stages I use a smaller hog bristle and a langnickel 5590 (nr 2) for sharp lines.. I don't save the paint..

well, I must confess my drawing is not really that good. I have the greatest difficulty in painting a likeness in portraits....
