  • Marlon Brando was the biggest name at that time that's why it was the first to appear and nobody knew Christopher Reeve and yet...Marlon Brando may have been a King of the Screen but Reeve was a true Superman.:-)

  • The music is awe inspiring great power and vision played by the best medium the orchestra. It does not seem right that Christopher Reeve has left us.I was in the Army at the time I saw it in 1978.With its pulsating rythms in the music you knew this was going to be a great movie to watch before it even started and it was.Saw and american band play this in berlin a year later.A milestone in the movies.

  • When the superman emblem come onto the screen so strongly it gives me chills

  • Best into ever....to this day. Great movie when I was a teen.

  • I saw this when it came out in the theater too. I was 12. i sat in the VERY front row and when the big red and yellow "S" burst on the screen, my heart nearly stopped! It took my breath away! Thanks for bringing back that memory!

  • No doubt the dislikes are the people involved in the Superman recrap coming in 2013.

    REEVE FOREVER BABY!

  • Here's to Christopher Reeve being the best superman ever and for John Williams creating the greatest theme song for the greatest superhero ever.

  • The greatest superhero theme ever written!!!!

  • I like this better than the Star Wars intro.

  • Have you notice the majority of movies that has to do with end of the world, such as The Fifth Element, deep impact, 2012, and much more always have a black president. Now we have a Black President = Obama. The end of the world might happen verysoon!!

    Obama is the antichrist!

When our Lord JESUSCHRIST returns, He (the antichrist/obama) will say that is an ALIEN INVASION

Repent and accept JESUSCHRIST as your Saviour and Lord , the WRATH OF GOD upon this stupid world is very near!!

  • @IhaveHopeinGod Are you high?

  • @IhaveHopeinGod Do us all a favor and blow your brains out.

  • The most impressive opening credits ever in Hollywood Movie History! :-) I saw the movie in 1978 (i was 12) and I loved every second of it. Thank you Christopher Reeve and Richard Donner for this wonderful work of movie art. RIP, Superman.

  • 2:58

  • john williams....... bitch.

  • Any one watches SmallVille will hate me for saying this at the end of season 10 the series ended with this theme now that was supercool or what and that is how a series should end.

  • i do hope the new superman movie has similar opening credits.

  • Best credits ever.

  • The greatest super hero theme ever!!! In all its glory!

  • S!!!!...

  • We all know thatt we are waiting for a uniquely different kiind of hero......

  • @nvet1953 explain a little more please..

  • It's a good movie. Not that awesome, like everyone sais, but I respect everything that was started by this film. Only this and the Conner Cut are worthy movies of the name: Superman.

  • The start of something big!

    To be a kid again!

  • QUE GENIAL LA BANDA SONORA DE ESTA PELÍCULA . Y GRANDE EL ACTOR QUE ENCARNO A SUPERMAN Christopher Reeve.

  • QUE GENIAL LA BANDA SONORA DE ESTA PELÍCULA

  • Such a tragic ending for such a great person.

  • there are many actors that can play spiderman,

many that can play captain america, many and so on ...

But there was only one "kal-el" on earth and that was :

CHRISTOPHER REEVE ( rip man of steel)

  • S for spiderman or S

  • OK so I saw this movie in the theater when It came out in the late 70's, I was a teenager. This movie was awesome in the theater, it made a big impact on me. And needless to say I was a Christopher Reeve fan 4 life after this. I remember when I saw this, I went a bit nuts, and one night I put on a pair of red bikini style underwear and I ran up and down the street as fast as I could in hopes that I could really fly. It didn't work, I just got really out of breath. It was fun tho, it felt good.

  • @BieberToob Very good you like superman ...

He has a message of kindness and generosity to the people of Planet Earth, which is also the time the film moved me very much, if it existed, would certainly be a messenger of God to protect us from the evil of the world ... especially the children would be in love with him

  • @Odor66 ok, that makes sense. gene hackmen was as well so i understand

  • why is christopher reeve not listed first? i think he should be

  • @nyyank87 Hollywood politics, Brand and Hackman were stars, Christopher Reeve was unknown.

  • @The6thSimpson very true, i guess i wouldve done the same lol

  • I remember watching the opening night premiere at the cinema. First and only time I recall the opening credits getting a full-blown ovation by the sellout crowd, including myself. Best "warm up" for a movie I can recall. The John Williams score still tingles the spine. One of his best.

  • why is Marlon Brando so kickass?

  • 32 people are marvel comic fans

  • I pretty much lost my idiot mind at age 10 when i saw this

  • I'll never get tired of these whooshing opening credits, nor the soaring John Williams music and every other spectacular thing about the original and good Superman films!

  • 1. Christopher Reeve

    2.Tom Welling

    3.Brandon Routh

Superman Returns may have had a poor plot and some weak actors, but Brandon Routh was great in it, he lived up to what Christopher Reeve has achieved as he portrayed Superman during his career.

  • zack snyders superman will be a real world superman

  • One word...Epic.

  • One word sums up this movie's intro: superb.

  • YOU make a great Superman! I=J=Y = Yod (Hebrew Alphabeth)

    Yeah is US!

    Jesus!

    I.E.Sus!

  • @hudna1 Well, I don't know. True, superman had his flaws. Jesus was sinless according to scripture. The makers of superman were Jewish. He(superman) is a type of Messiah. Kal-el "El" being a Hebrew word for God. I wonder.

  • Today, only 2 movies are wothy of the name Superman: the '78 film, and the '80-'06 Donner Cut.

  • My Favorite Superman's:

    1. Christopher Reeve = The One and Only True Superman!

    2. Tom Welling = The Real Young Superman

    3. George Reeves = The Real Classic Golden Age Superman

    4. Brandon Routh = Would make a Great Superboy Prime lol

    5. Dean Cain = Worst Superman Ever!

  • @templinho Coming soon...Zack Snyder's Man of Steel.....with a hip new cast, and gritty look done ala Batman Begins to pimp off Chirstopher Nolan's success.... =/

WTF does that mean done like Batman Begins?? Superman and Batman are two completely different characters with different "universes" (so to speak)...

Does this mean Superman is going to be YELLING and GROWLING his dialog throughout the movie?

  • Superman is a dick.

  • I will say this, the orchestra definitely did the film justice. John Williams will forever go down in history as one of the greatest composers of the century.

  • These days you couldn't get away with making movie credits this long with just text. You have to immediately get into the action because you'll supposedly lose the audience's attention. That really blows because I miss this type of presentation. I think it's gorgeous!

  • @sonaliegh I agree. I like a nice credit sequence, with suitable music, to get you in the mood for the film culminating in the climax where it says "Directed by.....". I hate the trend these days to not have any intro credits at all, with maybe only the title coming up for a few seconds if you're lucky, but sometimes not even that! You wouldn't sell a book with no title page. I was quite surprised, and pleased, when I saw Superman Returns to see they'd used this style of credit sequence.

  • YEHA IT´S GREATE 4 AN INTRO 4 MY SET MIXER

    THANKS 4 THIS APPORT

  • When I was a small kid growing up I did'nt really get into Superman until 1978 when that movie came out. It was from there I got hooked into it. It's a timelss classic that I will never forget. Christopher Reeve not only made us believe a man could fly but he also show us that he had the heart of Superman. He will always be the Superman that I will remember.

  • i dont even like superman, or the movies. But this song give me the chills it is so good

  • @3BALL4 Why man? Richard Donner worked his bollocks off so that people like us would remember legends like him, the crew + the actors who worked day and night to make this a hit.

The Superman movies were awesome!! Someday you'll learn to appreciate great saga's like this. BTW back in the late 70s they didn't have the kind of technology we have nowadays to make effects so at least appreciate the fact that this movie succeeded in making it as realistic as possible + an addictive soundtrack :D

  • The best Superman Film ever...everyone here forgot that 1978 existed, and had some of the best things in History happen besides my Birth all they can remember is 1985 anything before that doesn't seem to exist.

  • @TruDru1978 its just that history currently only focus's on every thirty years. Back when I was a kid no none of the other kids kenw anything aboutthe sixties of fifties. people focus on the 80's nowadays that people applauded the fifties in the 80's. zoot suits were passed off as fashion statements back in 1990.

  • May the greatest superman that has ever lived rest in peace.

  • @Jesyce86 I agree THis world really need Superman right now!

  • @Jesyce86 Yet, Chris Reeve's spirit and the character will live on :)

  • @Jesyce86 Tim Daly died?

  • The music makes this film it is just the epitome of heroic

  • @Jesyce86 Oh, HELL YEAH!!! GREATEST SUPERMAN EVER!!!

  • I wish superman was real.......

  • I remember seeing this in theaters with my dad. I'll always remember when the S came on the screen. My dad said, "My God!" The music and the effects caused the entire room too shake. Great memories. lol

  • Possibly one of the best opening credits sequences ... EVER! I remember as a kid seeing this at Mann's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, and when that ENORMOUS red "S" came across the screen the entire theatre shook with the power of this theme, and then ERUPTED!! It was indeed ... SUPER!!! ^_^

  • Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman had top billing. At that time in 1978 they were big movie stars on Hollywoods A list. Both had won Oscars for Best Actor. Brando for "The Godfather" in 1972 and Hackman for " The French Connection" in 1971.

  • Christopher Reeve. RIP. The man who made us all believe....

  • also this movie seems more 80ish than from the 70's...

  • 2:37

MUSIC BY JOHN WILLIAMS, SO F***'n GREAT !!!

  • When the "S" comes up, BAM, best part!

  • My mom used to hold me in her arms in a flying position and fly me around the room when this part of the movie came on, a long time ago. What a great feeling, and terrific memorie. Thanks mom. luv u.

  • R.I.P Jackie Cooper

  • I just love this score by John Williams...pure Genius!!!!

  • Christopher reeve bast Superman!!!!!!!!!!! no question! just like Roger Moore and Pierce Broson best James Bond!

  • @chrisprimera Sean Connery was the original 007 just like Christopher Reeve was also an original and no college kid lookalike dropout can top CR.

  • Here is my favorite Superman in this order:

    1. Christopher Reeve

    2. Brandon Routh

    3. Dean Cain

    4. Tom Welling

    5. George Reeves

  • Birth of the superhero movies. Superman 1 still the best followed by Michael Keaton as Batman in 1989.

  • @videozfann Totally agree!

  • @drlee2 thanks!

  • Chris ist und bleibt das Original!!!!

  • Chris ist und bleibt das Original!!!!

  • The 1977 Superman was one of the last best superhero genre related films next to Carter's Wonder Woman, Keaton's Batman and even Shipp's The Flash. Smallville and most TV versions are pure suck- yeah you heard me- and if you're one of the millions who liek smallville then your just a part of a generation of kids who don't know shit about film. you depend too much on special effects and not enough on storylines and development.

  • @ultimatemegadeath You can use the same argument back when this was new. It was fully of special effects the older generation would have been against because it takes away from the "storylines and development". Every generation seems to remember things from it's past in better a light than it really was, while the older generation of the time riled against it lol. It always happens, it's just the way things are.

  • @ultimatemegadeath I think your kinda bashing smallville just for the effects, Smalliville has a deep and intriguing plot. granted, the effects is what got me hooked, but once you start getting into the story, you forget about the effects and just want to see how the story plays out.

  • @ultimatemegadeath What the hell are you on about, Smallville has been nothing but storylines and developement spread out over ten years, there is actually not that much in the way of action scenes in a typical Smallville episode (about 40 mins) you will see about 5-6 minutes of action/special effects and that is being generous. I say you are the one not into developement if you want everything wrapped up in a 2 hour film.

  • WATCH,.'FREE;`;MOVIES,.:ONLINE!.`,

  • This is the first movie I ever watched in my life and the first time I was ever taken to a movie theater (my aunt took me when I was just a kid). I remember thinking, wow he is really flying! that movie made me wanna fly, but I knew I couldn't, lol. Many years later my fond child wish became reality as I've had many lucid dreams of flying just like Superman... (yes Christopher reeve, for me is the real Superman)

  • my favourite batmans in order:

    1.Michael Keaton

    2.George Clooney

    3.Val Kilmer

    4.Christian Bale

    5.Adam West

  • @artbbrain Michael Keaton was awesome & the original "BattyMan" :-)

  • @moh1612 jus like recent Christian Bale

  • Ohh... el intro de John Williams, en HD.. Cómo adoro la tecnología de hoy, compañeros.

  • Best part of any Superman movie ever! The opening credits.

  • @qwuezalothus the flying credis are traditional & beautiful.

  • super...............

  • deceased actors

    christopher reeve glenn ford

ironically the krypton victims, marlon brando, susannah york, trevor howard, harry andrews, maria schell

phyis thaxter still living as I'm writting this

  • TRULY INNOVATIE IN ITS TIMES THE CREDIT PRESENTATON

  • Superman = Zeus (gee-zeus as well), Jupiter. Wonder

Woman = Hera, Juno, The Flash = Mercury, Aquaman = Neptune, Poseiden, Dagon. The Green Lantern = Heaphestus, Jason, The Incredible Hulk = Hercules, Heracles, the same archtypes repackaged and updated to be sold again and again to new generations. (The Hero With A Thousand Faces).

  • @dynagravitomagnetic yeah but how do you come up with an interesting storyline like Superman, Lois Lane, Lex Luther etc.?? This is genius to incorporate elements of mythology and possibly Jewish biblical stories into that this kind story. Any thoughts?

  • @cjcheri The classic hero is the prime element in a tale that is always known by necessity as a "tragedy".

  • Did you hear it? The music actually says "Superman"!!!!!

  • This theme music better be in the reboot.

  • @Donnymac I hope so too.

  • I saw this movie on an army base in germany in 1978. great movie. the score is what made it such a much more better movie. helps to have a great score. I dont think raiders or starwars wouldve have been as big as they are if it werent for their scores.

  • I feel like America in all her might is rising again when I see and hear this.

  • @WintersWar Decentralized America with a socialist imperative, merges with the Chinese / India / Soviet to form new world solidarity 'People's Republic Of The United Earth". internet provides single language and all humans are components of government on equal footing by artificial intelligence proxy. (see movie ZEITGEIST on You-Tube)

  • Its gonna be really hard not hearing this piece of music at the begining of Zack Snyder's Superman movie.Somehow doesn't seem right without it.

  • 1975-1985 most amazing movies and music

  • 1:48

  • 1978, Birth of the Superhero movie and Batman 1989. Have not been topped since.

  • @videozfann and never will my friend, you can never beat an original no matter how many remakes there are

  • @moh1612 true that!

  • Best opening tile sequence in movie history.

Between the graphics and the music. Nothing ever better.

  • There are very few movie opening credits that can outdo this one!! Ever time I hear this score, it fills me with absolute joy...its Wonderful

  • my favorite supermans in order:

    1. Christopher Reeve

    2. Tom Welling

    3. Dean Cain

    4. Brandon Routh

    5. George Reeves

  • @lordmerlin10 , your seriously out of order.

2, should be 5, 5 should be 3, 3 should be 4 and 4 should be 2. because Routh played superman as Reeve would, he did it out of respect to Chris and Dana- Nuff said!

  • @ultimatemegadeath maybe but surperman returns sucked a dead mans balls..

  • @lordmerlin10

    My favorite Supermen in order:

    1. Christopher Reeve

    2. George Reeves

    3. Tom Welling

    4. Dean Cain

    5. Brandon Routh

It will be interesting to see how the new Superman, Henry Cavill will do. I have seen some interviews with him and I think he will do a great job. Too bad we won't see his Superman movie until December 2012.

  • @lordmerlin10 What about Tim Daly?

  • @lordmerlin10 Good order, though I'd probably swap Welling and Cain (because I grew up with Cain as my Superman, no Welling like all y'all young uns ;)), or have them be 2a and 2b. (Though poo poo to the SV producers for not giving us a full body shot, ah well....)

  • @lordmerlin10 this man and superman was a brilland rolemodel for us all...superman es our hero

  • @lordmerlin10 I thought Dean Cain was the WORST Superman. My ranking is:

    1. Christopher Reeve

    2. Brandon Routh

    3. Tom Welling

    4. John Newton Haymes (Superboy 1)

    5. George Reeves

    6. Gerard Christopher (Superboy 2)

    7. Dean Cain

Superman Returns was not a great movie by any stretch, but Brandon Routh was very good in the role.

  • @captainbryce1 yea..actucally i would put Brandon Routh as no. 2 on my list, because i was so unimpressed with Tom welling in the last episode of Smallville. How little he put on the suit and how unimpressive he looked.

Superman Returns wasn't the best film, but Brandon Routh tried to emulate Christopher Reeves performance as best as possible.

  • @captainbryce1 agree accept one thing. NO SUPERBOY ACTOR SHOULD BE ON THIS LIST!!! lol. Especially the horrible superboy 1 actor. He was terrible, then to make things worse, he got a DUI charge, then turned around and demanded more money!

  • @captainbryce1 He wasn't that bad, I mean for a live action superman tv show he was good, what did you expect? Of course Chris will be the best Superman, there is no denying that

  • @lordmerlin10 you like dean cain superman better than brandon routh?!?!?! I'd put routh right behind reeve.

  • @lordmerlin10 what about the super spectacular Kirk Alyn?

  • @lordmerlin10 Yeah, I'd say that's about right. I'd switch Dean Cain with Brandon Routh though.

  • Love the remastered sound!

  • 32 dickheads

  • Too pity it isn't complete. I still remember the very beginning: the curtains opening, the kid opening a comic of Superman and reading about the Daily Planet, the drawing of the globe on the Daily planet shading to a real thing while the music starts softly, the camera flying over it, forward the sky, forward the space, passing the moon, passing the rest of planets of the Sun system, and then the drums starts.

  • @HypercatZ Agreed. The opening credits should be posted on here in full. from the moment the music starts, that curtain opens. To the moment the moon becomes a real moon. You know you're about to be in for a ride through those credits. The experience just isn't complete without the opening starting from the begining. I still get chills from this opening. As zenmachinefilms said. Best movie opening ever. And I'm a Batman fan!! And YES Chris Reeve IS THE ONE AND ONLY . . . Superman!!!!

  • I remember seeing this in the theater..and when the Superman "S" emblem came "flyng" across the screen and the entire room shaking with the sound. It was awesome. I so agree with Marcusx1980's comments. There can be only ONE Superman, and it is and was and always be Christopher Reeve.

  • @rkinwatauga

    WRONG!

From 2012, there will a new Superman. Finally. Reeve was ashed of Superman 3 and 4!

  • @rkinwatauga this gives me chills. it's my favorite soundtrack. glad that john williams composed it. originally. jerry goldssmith was offered it. i'm glad that i've gotten a chance to have met christopher reeve & gotten his autograph. a gentleman.

  • @rkinwatauga I agree completely! Only Reeve Is Superman and Margot IS Lois Lane!! the chemistry can never be duplicated

  • @rkinwatauga Same thing - I remember the opening also with the huge "S" flying onto the screen , the speakers made the whole theater shake. Parents took me when I was 9 at the one huge theater in Killeen, TX in 1978 when my dad was stationed at Ft Hood. I will never forget it. I saw all of them through my life, Christopher Reeve will always be the one and only Superman! same thing for the cartoon Superman from the Superfriends in the 70's. The voice, the artistry, the music - "Great Scott!"

  • @rkinwatauga Christopher Reeves smile could light up a room.

  • When I was younger, I loved the wooshing credits and Ms Teschmacher.

  • How sad, Hollywood. They've come to realize sequels usually suck and don't generally make that much money. From now on, look for these "franchises" to reboot every few years. Same old story, told over and over and over and over and... well, you know.

  • @HalluxSinister Reboots should really happen every 20-50 years or so, just so the next generation can hone their talents. As for great classics, leave them alone.

  • My favorite comic book films in order

    5) Superman

    4) Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

    3) Superman II

    2) Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

    1) The Dark Knight

  • Just the name SUPER is awesome. A name that implies exellence, outstanding quality and grand pure magnificience

  • I always get emotional every time i hear this :'(

    The Epicness of it :O

  • I hope the same theme is used in the movie reboot.

  • Truly one of the greatest film scores of all time. This was when movies still took their time getting started. Whatever baggage you might have entered the theater with, after hearing this main title you were in Superman's world.

  • One of the best opening in film history! Great sound and a great Christopher Reeve!

  • New Superman will be played by Henry Cavill ;) The next movie is set for release in december 2012

  • @Spyflugan91 12 2012 ? so superman will indeed save us all. XD

  • @Spyflugan91 WOW so will the new Spiderman flic with Brit Andrew Garfield and the 3rd Batman reboot with Christian Bale titled "The Dark Knight Rises"

  • Habemus Superman: his name is Henry Cavill

  • susannah york rip

  • rip supermans mum

  • The best opening movie credits BAR NONE!

I put this as high as I can on my surround system and across the flatscreen 52....it is absolutely incredible!

Thank you for posting this gem.

  • Sped up too fast. That's a shame, because these opening credits are my favorite moment in movie history. It kills me that almost 400,000 people sat through this speedy, high pitched version. It is not the same thing, trust me.

  • The most powerful super hero EVER!!!!!!!!!

  • I was just awestruck watching this intro on the big screen as 5 year old kid.

  • RIP Ms Susannah York

  • RIP Susannah York

  • For its day (and even now) an incredible way to display the credits at the start of a movie. Beautiful score and perfect sound effect design as well. Just epic :) \o/

  • agreed. these credits in 3D would probably make me wet my pants a little.

  • I want Superman 3D next

  • Bring Back The Man of Steel to the Movies.

Brandon Routh was Perfect in the Role of a Young Clark Kent / Superman.

5 years ago he was a Little Too Young for the Part, But that gave him Shelf Life for new Films in the Superman Series.

is it me, or did he almost look like an even More Handsome Twin of Christopher Reeve....?

  • Comment removed

  • @Roadracer987654321 Brandon was 26 when he played Superman, Christopher was 26 when he played Superman, how was he a "little too young"?
