My Dad was in the navy at the time. He was having Christmas dinner with his parents in Tasmania, and was called up to join HMAS Brisbane. He was up there for two months cleaning up.
He returned to Hobart in February when he got word that his brother had been killed.
I remember Tracy like is was yesterday!!...we were very lucky to survive. Did anyone remember the C130's flying really low spraying to stop diseases? And all the gun shots around Casuarina from the local and Federal police shooting looters and stray dogs! All the steel power poles in front of our house were bent right over and our neighbour never found their car! Sorry but Tracy was far, far worse than Yasi.
The damage at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was Holocaust.
Holocaust is the entire consuming by fire of any particular thing.
The houses in those Japanese cities were built of light-framed wood with rice-paper walls; by comparison the sturcutres in Darwin were of modern technologically sturdy construction.
There was no help for the people of Japan; there was no Medicare.
@MoilAndToil - I think the word you were looking for was "firestorm" rather than "holocaust". Check the dictionary definitions and footage of Hiroshima 1945 and Darwin 1974. The result was much the same - near total destruction. There was no Medicare in Darwin then, either - Medibank, maybe, but not Medicare as we know it.
In the mini-series "Cyclone Tracy", the lead character who is a journalist gives exactly the same narration about Xmas morning in Darwin in 1974. Obviously, someone did their research based on this footage.

Cyclone Tracy was the largest peace time effort by the Royal Australian Navy, some 13 or 14 ships came to our rescue...
