It's actually better to go ahead and use the leash to reinforce the sit and chain the commands with "Sit, (beep), sit," with the leash reinforcement coming on the first "Sit." That way, the dog is already in the process of sitting when he hears the whistle. I'm not advocating being harsh, just making things clear and consistent for the dog to better understand what you want.

The only person that could truely tell if the dog is unhappy is a pet phsycic or the owner. Every dog is different you know. Maybe the dog just has that "eh i wish i was doing something else" look on her all the time.

why is there so many whiners on here? The dog's body posture is attentive and relaxed. She makes eye contact and is waiting for a command, which would usually be coming after a whistle blow in the field. The greatest thing about labs, is they're unwavering want to please the handler. It's a dog doing it's job, not a child in a sweat shop.

the eye contact and the sit shows just that the dog is well trained.

i know its purely a personal thing but i hate the sound of them thunderer whistles! i use an acme 210 whistle with my working cocker...and i must say teaching a dog to sit to a whistle on a lead is easy, its when u let them off the lead and they are at distance is when the fun starts

He should have demonstrated the whole process and not just the end result.

The natural progression is to teach the dog to sit. Then begin saying the word SIT, and once they understand how to sit and the word SIT you blow the whistle as they are sitting. Then you can stop saying the word SIT and merely blow the whistle.

Well I think he's trying to talk to us from an advanced level after the Sit command has been taught from puppyhood. I assume that hunting dogs are taught the basic sit-down-stay as normal, this just becomes an addition. Remember, they have under 10 minutes to work with on these short clips and for the best results, talk to a local dog trainer; as not all dogs are text book and individual dogs train differently.
