  • like many of my generation had arealy beetle in 66. well one gripe ws the gear shifting for I h ave short arms and becasue it was rear engine he lever was further back then I like I wonder waht it was on a renult alll so read engine An other thing I just wonder is how did the sll in the west when many state had no speed limet on mine abut 70 was tops I never about this I will never call the new beetle a beetle, on the old oenes with rear air cooled engie then they had to meet EPA AND DOT man

  • Of course British TV presenter/actor/Chief Scout drove one almost all the way across the Irish Sea!

  • The volkswagen bug, The first car that floated!

  • hmmmm New proyect!!! chop the roof, weld the doors, re-seal every part of the car, add a proppeller to the engine and taa-daa!!! amphibious car!

    Me Gusta

  • @BadAssEngineering ...schwimmwagen?

  • @RyanHelbig yes, but cheaper than an original one

  • @RyanHelbig I knew a fellow who had restored an old German Schimmwagen. It even had the machine gun mount in the corner of the cab and the propellor on the back that could be lowered and locked into its power take-off. Ran great and was fun to look at!

  • Looks like a 69 model

  • Dude its cool but how old r they cause thats an old commercial

  • My Herbie is still solid enough to float but it would most likely not run if submerged...

  • dude that's so cheap i need one and i need it so badly if it can drive on the water

  • The '68 Sunroof Beetle I have was bought new by my Dad in Hamburg, Germany and he shipped it over here to the US, Still a great car!!!

  • @97AlexN, You got THAT right!!! With the exception of Mercedes, Most new cars being manufactured today are NOTHING but WORTHLESS, FUCKING, AIRBAG-LAIDEN, TUPPERWARE LUNCHBOXES!!!! The more metal they lose, The more airbags that are put in!!! I own 2 Mercedes S550 4Matics as well as a '68 Sunroof Beetle, I'll NEVER sell them!!!

  • i bought 1 new for $2000 cash out the door, in 1970. no debuts then or now.

my friend bob, did the same with a 70 Nova.

    inflation is and was bad.

im restoring a 68 (90%) and the 2 door drains and 6 more, will sink the car, but is real slow.

no car is 100% but VW was very very tight fitting in the day.

They are simple and reliable, I drove my 70' for 200,000 miles with no fails.

yes, i did all the service my self.

a retired mech. Long live Type 1s. See the movie Sleeper. for more fun.

  • i wish they still cost $1999 new today id buy one straight away, iv wanted a bug for ages

  • @99xela99 i want one is it still available this is not a car its a TANK

  • i've owned 4 beetles so far-and i'm after another,i currently drive a vwgolf 2

  • now you can swim with car

  • Here in Mexico those cars are immortal...

  • @PlottingMax not really, they were killed in 2003

  • I CANT BELIEVE they ruined a $1999 car

just to make a TV commercial! :^O

  • But, will it blend ?

  • Don't worry, Herbie is gonna get him.

  • im 17 and i will be getting this car as my first car!!! i want it soo bad!!! it was so cheap back in the day :(

  • ok. so..get a vw beetle, a spair set of paddle tires, drive to the lake, change tires, and walla you have the original amphibious vehicle. just gota stop and get the poles and bait.

  • i have that car well did. or that type of car still have one 73 baha but the one we had was 63 beetle. it was white

  • 2,000 bucks? i'll take it!

  • I'm in a boat.

  • Yes, it floats. But more importantly, will it BLEND?

  • @zolero007 yes it will

  • musthave!

  • I want one,

or two or three at that price!

  • O:42 WHERE ARE THE TIRES?

  • that guys voices is allsome :)

  • where did there quality go?

  • Ill go sking in that thing. Just strap it to the boat with a strong rope.

  • Well, duh, Herbie floated too!

  • Wouldn't it be funny if he drove it in the water and it sunk like a stone?

  • inflation will destroy this country (America).

    VOTE RON PAUL

  • best vw ever made

  • cars were soo effin cheap back than now cars are like about 50,000 or something like that lol

  • @swirkass

You have to remember that this was among the cheaper cars at the time, and the price with the inflation from 1972 would be like 13000 dollars in our time... So it's not THAT cheap.

  • @swirkass - Yeah, but people only made about $80 bucks a week back then.

  • I Tried To Do This And I Drowned

  • @mrosa123456789 Haha

  • If Ted Kennedy had been driving one, he would have been president

  • murderer! :( :O

  • My God. Why is he abusing my baby?

  • come guys think... in 1972 $1999 with todays inflation is the same as any other compact car out there.

but yeah vw cars are awesome. i drive a jetta myself :] great car.

  • at 0:47 you can see they did a crap job of editing

carrrrrrrrrrr this kind of qualiy-kind of price reminds me of the winnebego man

  • I drove one into my local lake and I died...

  • It's true thy do float.

  • ...im buying a beetle.

  • HaHa N people thought this was Un norm at the time WOW... ! A+ for finding this Video!!!!

  • Tough

  • @EddieXen1821 he is Lew Wood and he is a really nice guy who was hired to appear in this commercial.

  • @EddieXen1821 its called advertisement u moron

  • @EddieXen1821 Dude, seriously. Actor hired by VW to do that to the car.

  • VolksWagen rules !!!

  • If Ted Kennedy had one of these he might have made President.

  • old school rules!!!

  • non of the beetles i've had to mot would do that for sure!!

  • Try that on a new car I dare ya thats why I own older rigs tuff as nails .

  • but..in 1972 we were in high school, working part time for 2.00 an hour and stil could afford a car..today at minimum wage of 8.00 or so,u cant afford to pay atention, the doolar was worth a lot more back then...and we didnt have fags coming out of their closets...lmao!!

  • dang....i had that exact same car, orange 1972 super beetle, drove it for 6 years, took it from minnesota to calif two times..miss that car..i never took any pics of it.....i actually paid with tax title and license,2300.....lmao..

  • In today's money that's $10299.73

  • wait cant you by a bug for that price now

  • these old commercials really do get the point through

  • I wouldnt even buy that car for 2,000$ now

  • You have to love these old commercials. Great post.

  • i hate those popple cracks in the old films

  • @crazyryan sssoo who cares

  • WOW! $1999.00

  • They are pretty airtight if they're in good condition. You shouldn't be able to slam the door with the windows up, because the door just bounces back off the air pressure inside. No other car I know does this.

  • I WOULD NOT WANT TO BE IN THAT TRUNK IN 30 MORE SECONDS! IT'S GOING DOWN.

  • THAT WAS A WASTE OF THAT CAR! LOL

  • If Ted Kennedy had been driving one Mary Jo would be alive today..and he might have been president

  • Haters gonna hate.

  • I remember that commercial very well. The cameras, however, stopped rolling, just as that car was sinking....

  • I remember driving my 1968 VW bug to school in 1985. This ugly old redneck bitch used to make fun of me for driving it. She couldn't stand that it was all fixed up and had fresh paint and great body work. She also told me that VW would never place a Turbo on the Beetle. Her dumb fuckin' redneck ass was proven wrong. LMAO . Wooooooooooooooooo

  • @TheLizardKing1967 She just really wanted to spend some "quality time" in it! XD

  • If you watch closely... its sinking

  • @calgrizz52

Almost airtight means almost, not completely.

Other cars, even newer cars would sink immediately.

  • This is awesome marketing! I want to go out and buy one today! Car commercials today are just about sophistication and looking cool lol. Why did quality and simplicity become such an afterthought.

  • probaly he s lying all the car brigs a alot of water

  • for that money today you can buy a refrigerator ...

  • Oh My Effing Goodness ... $1999... pffffttttttt. Damn can I go back in time!

  • @jojomantana That's equivalent to about 6000 in today's money. You have to remember inflation.

  • @TheAuto101 My moms kia is 8,000 and I much much MUCH rather Drive my bug than that car. My beetle gets better gas mileage, and drives better, and handles better, and is quieter than her car.

  • @jojomantana you can borrow my DeLorean, if you want...

  • volkswagen mecanic suck....

  • I want one.. :(

  • what year is this commerical

  • Um, the bottom is not sealed, I actually drove the front end of my Super Beetle in our pond back when I was horsing around, and water immediatley started coming in the floor boards where the pedals were. I kept my back wheels of course out of the pond, and as soon as water started coming in I put it in reverse and slowly backed it out so I wouldn't dig myself into a hole and look like retard with my car half stuck in a pond for no reason other than being an idiot.

  • @cobrachoppergirl the reason yours did that is because about mid 1960's building of the beetle went to mexico where there was less qc and so there were places that the workers in mexico didnt assemble as well as the germans. super beetle was introduced in i believe 1970 and is a different design so that might also have to do with it

  • @cobrachoppergirl Ya, Germans also made the first car too. It was probably tha mexicans that built urs.

  • I've been using mine as a house boat since '74.

  • ...how...did he get out?

  • The beetle has always been one of my favorite car now I really want one

  • for me this car may costs more than rx8...

  • 2000 sign me up!

  • If you seal off the doors it will float indefinately. Infact, most cars have enough displacement to float if sealed

  • @pyroboy08 ha gotta seal more than jus the doors

  • @nikoa88 well, a little expanding foam here and there wouldn't hurt :) watch the top gear about amphibious cars, it was really entertaining.

  • @pyroboy08 yeah true lol...but i saw that :P good show.

  • im going to use one of those for a boat

  • At least one good thing from Hitler

  • how much wus $1999 then

  • @TheCoollikdat About $ 8,000

  • damn good german engineering!

  • Ted Kennedy wished he had been in one.

  • that car is sealed tighter than the asshole of the german who made it

  • 44 people tried this. thay dident think it was so funny.

  • I loaned my car to this asshole once. And he drove it over a cliff.

  • Comment removed

  • hey herbie !! get a new paint job ? hahaha lol

  • so is $1999 considered cheap or expensive back then?

  • God bless the Germans...

  • I'll take it!

  • i wonder if this is really true lol ?

  • Wow, cost less than an iPad2.

  • 1999$ damn i wish this were the 70.s you cant even get a used car for that much

  • Did he says 13 pounds of paint??? lol

  • Herbie???? xD

  • i wonder if the new ones float...

  • If Ted Kennedy had been driving a VW, he would have been president!

  • I liked old German cars like this. Nowadays their cars are built to be annoying to work on to encourage owners to get ripped off at the dealership on cheap parts that break.

  • If Ted Kennedy had been driving a VW that night, he might have been president!

  • I laughed when i saw $1999

  • would NEVER try that in my beetle, love it :D

  • only 1999$ fuck this im going back to 1972

  • @fockya tell me how you get there. i wish to join. one quick thing, i do not have 1.21 gigawatts.

  • @fockya

Thats about $10000 in todays money. Not that cheap, considering how much safer, faster and more fuel efficient cars are now for the same price, or may a grand more.

  • @TheAuto101 YOU sir have FAILED to NOTICE that OLD cars are so much better then new cars

  • @DaDuttFire I AGREE! my mom's old VW Bug was like a tank. you could not kill it

  • @DaDuttFire - In what way? I bet you didn't get 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS, air bags, power steering, laminated windshield and whiplash protection in this old bug. Heck, you had to option up to a radio, and I don't think Beetles ever had a heater-demister, let alone aircon.

  • @JBofBrisbane And you would be WRONG. Beetles had A/C , heater and ALL of them had radios. Educate yourself before you speak son.

  • @JBofBrisbane I Drive a 73 Bug as my daily driver and I would rather be in my Bug then a a new car the same size. As for the safety features I was involved in an accident in a beetle, an accord hit me and not only did her take more damage I was completely unhurt and she had whiplash. Also a car that small you didn't need disk brakes but there are many kits to add them, and ALL VW's came with a heater that worked from the cooling fan and heat exchangers on the exhaust so you got heat in secs

  • @wolfgangiceclaw you got heat in secs like that? I can see that happening. Wow is there nothing new I won't learn about these little cars everyday?

  • @TheAuto101 Safety?! You have got to be FUCKING kidding me, all the cars these days are made out of fucking plastic!

Infact, I might even go as far as to say, the only manufacturers left, that actually make cars, GUARANTEED to save you is Mercedes!

  • @fockya but back in the day, it was also harder to make money.

  • I did the same thing with a pacer wagon! (too much ta drink & not enough road)

    It never ran again either!

  • I just saw a vid of the new 4200lbs Ford Taurus. We'll never get cars as light and simple as the beetle again thanks to the out-of-control bureaucrats making the laws at the EPA and NHTSA. Defund these bozos immediately and you'll have 45mpg cars for under $15k, AND you'll have NEW US automakers! We'll never see a new major automaker in the US because no business in it's right mind would stand up to these bullies! Defund them and make them get real jobs!

  • sound like a tank when he drive off..

  • I read once that there was a bit of dishonesty in that commercial. They actually taped the door seams to make it float longer, but they WERE pretty air-tight. You had to crack a window to close a door.

  • go ahead buy a nazi car ! imagine how much people died and got stolen under the hitler to build the shittest factory the world has even seen . VOLKSWAGEN

  • @claytonmangi the war was ages ago... volkswagen are one of the best, most reliable and most smartly built cars in the world. Germany are engineering genius', give them respect, you seriously can't call Volkswagen shit.

  • So much for that engine. lol

  • @TheInsanebrain247 nah, just dry out the plugs and wires and fire it back up!

  • $1999.99 wow. Where are those days now??? P.S, what do you think he would have done if he hit the water and it flipped upside down with the windows open. So much for air tight.

  • @dbmrhi Now a days that 2000 buck car would probably be like a $13,000 car. I can remember when 2000 dollars was a good sum of money

  • If Ted Kennedy had a V.W. He would have been PRESIDENT

  • @sllove10 amen nice one

  • yes. i remember this commercial

  • tell you what though, if I did that to a beetle, it'd float, then I'd spend eh... probably $1000 or more on a new engine. CUZ I FUCKED IT UP! XDDD

  • HERBIE DID IT!

  • i love vw beetle

  • That's cool

  • If that was a Toyota Prius, it would have sunk in a matter of minutes.

  • LOL the end where he says now, what kind of car can give you this kind of qualit[dub]kind of price?

  • LOL if you tryed to float a 1972 beetle today it would not work like that i promise..lol BUT i sure would like to see someone try it!

  • well, I'm sold!

  • Beetles... Can really float...

  • Just Add A Propelor On The Back Nd U Have A Boat

  • i never new this wtf imma buy a beetle now lol

  • hitler was a good car designer

  • @jradetzky

You mean Ferdinand Porsche, he is the one who designed it.

Hitler only employed him for the project.

  • I have seen one float across the English Channel. How far it is that?

  • $2000?????? LOL

  • @234234234werrrrrrr its actually $1999 :)

  • Where do I sign?

  • haha thats the shit

  • its airtight? why are we spending millions on space shuttles for?? send up a VW beatle

  • @cprich22

    Brilliant!

  • @beetlejuice150 thank you

  • @beetlejuice150 not really, they said nearly airtight, not air tight, however if you needed to evacuate an had a beetle you could hop in it eject it and probably survive for longer than if you had nothing

  • @cprich22 yah we can use it as boat or better submarines!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @genli1 there are just so many uses for a VW beatle!!!
