@johnnomal Yes I know that, but with high winds (Mt Washington is known for), ice, snow and awful weather... your best friend falls and he/she is not roped off to you and another... well say good bye to your friend. I would rather be safe than sorry.
@alwood1993 Define your fall? If the person fell 3ft to 5ft he/she could suffer an injury (sprain ankle, broken bones, head, etc). If he/she is hurt badly you're stuck up there with your friend until SAR comes but with Mt Washington you're the only person that can help them during high winds, white outs, etc. The rope helps prevent major falls, keeps people spread out (domino fall), etc. The last time I got someone off a Mt, took 20 hours.
@k2chris1983 Have you ever hiked the Lions head winter trail? There really is not places that you would fall down 5 feet but I see your point. It would only hinder your hike/time. On the Tuckermans Ravine trail in winter I could see people wanting to rope up because if you slip on certain parts you could fall to your left down a hundred feet. But im pretty sure people do not use that trail in the winter, they use lion head.
@alwood1993 Yes, and I also have glissade the Lions Head trail before. I'm not talking about falling 5ft like a cliff but falling backwards. As in the video you can see one of the climbers are having a hard time, and I don't like how close the people are. If that climber had fallen, that rocks would done some damage. Anyways, this could just be me because I do SARs and we always like to be safe than sorry.
@k2chris1983 haha I can tell you would rather be safe than sorry. Damn 20 hours is a long time. True, they are pretty close together and could trigger them all falling if one fell.
@alwood1993 Get with a local SAR group in your area! It's free training (well in VA) and you will learn A LOT of things! The people are amazing and it looks good on your resume too. Yeah, between 18-20 hours getting a lady off from Old Rag in VA which she broken her leg.
Nice video, where exactly the 3 people “they do not make the summit” turn around. The slop between Lion Head summit and the junction for Lion Head and Tuckerman Ravine Trail is not very easy in that king of condition, hope the turnaround before. Last time I climb Mount Washington in that kind of weather, nobody was waiting for me at the summit with hot chocolate. You are lucky. See you on trail this winter.
Not to be a dick or anything but you guys didn't rope each other off in pairs of 3?
