The American version never hit it off as a Nazi invasion of the USA was never likely, where else in Britain it was imminent and the home guard a necessity for fulfilling military roles whilst the lads were away fighting,
Apparently Croft and Perry originally adapted The Man and The Hour for the pilot but the American company wanted to do The Deadly Attachment and got an American writer to assist. If abc had just let Croft and Perry do what they know rather than bulldozing their influence onto them, this may have become a full series.
There's been a lot of poor American "remakes" but this is by far the worst I've ever seen. Worse than Red Dwarf USA even. Embarrassingly awful, unfunny and, well, shit.
disgusting! Dad's army is the greatest comedy ever written, and the yanks ruined it, this should be illegal. A MESSAGE TO AMERICA - YOU CAN'T WRITE SITCOM COMEDIES - LEAVE IT TO THE BRITS!
@benrosenberg: Don't be so bloody arrogant! This Dad's Army rehash rightly never got beyond the pilot episode. Ever heard of Friends? Cheers? Frasier? Seinfeld? Check them out, and pit them against such riotously mirth-free British offerings as My Family, Life of Riley or All About Me.
friends, you consider friends, the work of good american comedy, that reallty sums up americas sitcoms, putting friends as one of there top sitcoms - My family is the only one of those that I heard of, which really shows how far they boomed in this country, face it, the british rule the world in comedy
@kankuch0: And have you ever heard of Dad's Army, Fawlty Towers, The Office, Extras, The Vicar of Dibley and Only Fools and Horses? All of these great British sitcoms were so good that the Americans had to have a go at making their own version, every time they failed.
@Wilko1900 the US versions of fawlty towers were awful as was sandford (steptoe)and son i vaguely remember `all in the family` (till death....) which was quite highly rated .martin clunes said that the US version of `men behaving...` was awful there was actually no scenes of the blokes getting pissed ! its a pity we did`nt do a version of MASH
I clicked like because I had no idea this ever happened, I wanted to click dislike because it's obviously a travesty.

That...was...horrible! Too bad, Lou Jacobi is a great character actor. Did anyone else notice, the German was Mindy's dad from Mork and Mindy.

@kanenkitten I saw an attempt at re-making Red Dwarf too, chalk that up as yet another failure.
