Woah, Jack McGowan is done up to look EXACTLY like the mad doctor who's under the control of the evil vampire in the classic old silent film "Vampyr". For a minute I thought it was the same actor, then I realized "um, after about 30-40 years having passed, couldn't be!"  I guess that was an inside joke for people who were really into vampire flicks. Wonder why people were so into costume dramas from 1600s-1700s Europe in the 60s?

british have always been into costume dramas...lots of costumes left over from previous movies too; not as though they were thrown away

and, there was/is lots of british censorship, especially against gore; so putting a gory horror movie in victorian settings got movies past british censors....the tough james bond books were joked up to also get past the movie censors.

This film is a feast for the eyes. Few movies of this quality are released today. A remarkable film made in 1967 which remains incredibly fresh to this day. A wonderful mix of humour within a vampire theme.

the first time i saw this movie i was so scared I couldn't sleep

@Pataya8 würd ich so nicht sagen, der hier WAR und IST zum Beispiel GUT. Ich weiss ja nicht ob du ihn schon mal ganz gesehen hast, aber der Trailer ist nicht optimal in Szene gesetzt xD.

Genauso gibts natürlich damals wie heute viele Filme die gut sind aber auch viele die schlecht sind.

This movie is certainly a masterpiece! Dark insightful comedies are the best, and unfortunately, the less. Polanski will remain along with Kubrick one of the masters in the genre.

Yes if it wasn't edited, it would probably be a better movie but it is still absolutely unique. I heard it is made in the style of "Prague school" or something. I've never seen other Prague school movies so for me this movie is unlike any other. It has some boring spots but overall it is very original and impressive.

I thought this movie was kind of interesting; it had some striking images. But it seems disjointed and haphazard. Roman Polanski said in his biography that his film was heavily edited and censored before being released, resulting in him feeling like someone who's given birth to "a retarded child". He said the film turned out to be nothing like he had intended it to be.

Everything about this flick is good, right from the intro where it transitions from animation to live action, the settings, sure looks like Romania, the costumes and the premise behind the story. It's probably my favourite vampire flick too.

Polanski disliked this film; it really wasn't "his" film, it got so edited and censored. Sharon Tate was lovely, but this film creeps me out. Her character died drained of blood and Tate died...drained of blood.

Ah yes. I was an artists' model & aspiring actress in LA in the mid 70s. I loved Roman and would've gladly partied with him but at the ripe old age of 15 I was probably too mature for his tastes. The man's a genius. Let him come back to the US for crissakes. Love you Roman!!
