I could've sworn those jets taking off at first were Thunderchiefs. A quick replay showed they were, in fact, F-16's. I thought I was losing it there for a second. I don't think Thuds have flown since 1984.
@aagranata We had a reserve outfit with 105s at Carswell AFB in Fort Worth Texas. That was in the early 80's. They switched to F-4's...I don't know which model. I was surprised that F-105s were still flying when I got there in 1981.
@BBQFanNo1 I can relate to that...as a kid I used to watch the Georgia ANG F-105s roar of with a thundering boom when the afterburners lit. What a sight it was!!!
@ryanspeed They have them in museums, but as far as flying is concerned, I doubt it. I was just saying that *if* there was one flying around, I would also kill to see it.
@336kgf I do know they were planning to restore an F-105D to flying status in Chino, California (number 59-1759) but I think that that project has gone flat due to the fact that I havent heard anything in years as to it's status. Like you I'd kill to see a Thud fly again as well!
@ryanspeed I think the problem is simply figuring out a way to keep the bird running where they can afford it. Remember, the Thud was the largest fighter ever produced. Since they haven't made one in so long, and it's not like the Phantom where lots of countries were and still are using it. They would probably have to bastardize the hell out of it and use existing engines, avionics etc. from other planes just so that they won't have to spend so much damn time keeping it flightworthy.
@ryanspeed At this rate, it wouldn't look like an F-105. It would look like something out of the Red Bull Air Races and NASCAR had a kid on steroids with all of the decals and everything else stuck to it.
@ryanspeed Besides that, I have seen pictures of the entire Thud avionics package. It had to be at least 20 different black boxes crammed into that thing. Imagine having to fix all of that. OY.
@SgtGrant23 Yea, I saw them a few years back. It was awesome!
The Collins Foundation is in the process of trying to restore an F-105D Thunderchief (# 62-259) to flying status. Last I heard they are trying to work out some legal issues with the Air Force. It might be a while before it takes to the sky again.
My first re-enlistment in the USAF was in the back seat of an F-100 F at about 18,000 ft above New Mexico in 1969. The pilot was L/c Rosenberry and I still have my Mach Busters Club certificate mounted on the wall. Col. Rosenberry showed me pretty much everything the airplane would do. Along with a mach run we did loops, rolls, dives, high G turns and a high speed run along the top of a nearby mountain range. What a ride!!! Definately one of the most memorable events in my life. That is, without any doubt, the most beautiful jet I've ever seen. I love how the F-16 taking off gives the impression of you looking at both the present and the past.
Stupid F-16 had to go and ruin the video, lol.

Why did they film just the tail of the aircraft?

The F-100 was a kick ass bird...The Thunderbirds flew it for years...Having vipers doing flybys and landings does not help...It was a great bird..

For a couple of bucks, you can buy your own F-100 SS too! Best bang for the buck

Sure is great to see one of these beautiful old century series girls like this F-100 fly again!
Now, if only they'd restore an F-101, F-102, F-104, F-105 and an F-106 to flying status for me that would be a dream come true!

There's a guy at the airport near me (KIWA) that owns a Starfighter. I'd sure like to see the others fly too!

@pdutube An F-104? That would be cool!
There's an F-105D set to be restored to flying status in Chino, California. Unfortunatly, the sour economy has put a dampner on it for now!

Love to see that fly!!! In the youtube searchbox type "spacefrontier starfighter" and you'll get a ride in the cockpit of the F104 in Mesa.

@336kgf Yep! Not only that but funding-wise you would have to have sponsors out the ying-yang just to keep it flying as well!

I suppose it is a function of fuel prices at this point. This bird takes 1800 gallons for about an hour's flight.
