  • u 20 year olds who attck lady kier as a one hit wonder are so wrong.....if u only really knew the deal....

  • they totally ripped her off!

  • sega offerd lady miss kier thousands of dollar for her image n some songs to create a videogame where she was gonna be the star n the bitch said no to that, she didnt take the offer... anyway they create ulala n her space channel 5 BASED on lady miss kier n her dee-lite this bitch sues sega 4 that n she lost the lawsue so she had to pay sega over 600,000 dollar wich was all her money. life gives u surprises.so what did we learn today kids? if a big company offers money money 4 ur image TAKE IT

  • agree

  • owned.

  • ulala its just inspired by lady miss kier whats so wrong with that..

  • great video but i thnink it needs music...

  • And Lady Kier losted the lawyer and was forced to pay Sega ~3~

    :o

I never heard of this Lady Kier O_O

  • Funny when the game came out i htough it was a deeelite game :D

seem slike they did copy alot of things down LOL

  • What's fishy to me is the name Ulala...as in Ooh La La...as in "Ooh la la la la la la...etc." from the Deee-Lite tune, "What Is Love". A phrase that she often is noted for because of it's unique sound in the track. Not convinced that that is a coincidence.

  • Well, to answer the specific question posed by the title of the video, Lady Kier came first. But the suit's been settled, so I guess them's the breaks. :/

Kind of a shame, in my opinion. I like both Deee-Lite and Space Channel 5.

  • actually Sega didn't really hear of Lady Kier she just thought they did she tried to sue but she lost

  • Ulala has better hair than Lady Miss Kier, also, when comparing the "kick" dance both ladies do, you should have shown Ulala's kick dance she does in report 2 if you do well, which is identical to Lady Kier's little kick routine, but anyway, just an observation, personally I find Ulala a much more appealing character than Miss kier, Spaaace Channel 5!

  • Isn't this all just very quintessentially 70's-80's imagery? How can we be certain she was the source? The clothes, the dance moves, all look like part of the artistic movement at the time. This Lady Kier is intriguing though.

  • ok i love both space channel 5 and dee lite so im not trying to vilify either one but...HELLO lady keir and deee lite were in the hight of poularity when ulala wasnt even a glimmer in the game designers eye,at the begining of the video for groove is in the heart it opens with miss kier saying ooh la la,Ulala has kier's facial fetures, wardrobe and movements, the space helmet she wears when in space is the exact shape and color of the helmet in deee lite's power of love video,i mean come on!!!

  • i love space channel five, and i think that if when they were creating the game, they got inspired by lady keir, then she should feel flattered. also, the game has it's own creativity. lasttly, anyone can friggin kick.

  • >.o lady Kier "CLAIMED" Sega asked her to use her song in the European version! Ulala's character design was made long before that! her designer NEVER even heard of Lady Kier! ( my OPINION-> AND IF SEGA SHOULD GET SUED FOR USING OLD TIME RETRO DANCING! LADY KIER SHOULD GET SUED FOR COPING THE PEOPLE THAT FIRST STARTED IT!flame me if you wish! the money she put on herself!( Not my words ->'California law stipulates that an unsuccessful plaintiff in such a case must pay the defendant's legal fees)

  • I guess the question is if it was a fan or just somebody looking for ideas. But youtube hasn't been around that long, so it would have been hard to find video footage of Miss Kier. I wonder how they did that.

  • there were ways of tracking down footage before you tube, hell there were ways when the internet consisted of only text...

  • ha kier lol-justina gotaa see this

  • Honda, Honda, Mitsubishi, Toyota :)

  • Why do you have a picture of the girl from the maxipad commercial? That has nothing to do with Space Channel 5 (they simply used the same idea).

  • i lol'ed.

  • Even so, this is the best game ever, lol!

  • Fucking hell! Sega could have been a little more discreet about it. Does O J Simpson work for Sega or something?

  • HONDA HONDA TOYOTA TOYOTA TOYOTA

  • My first thoughts were borrowing some aspects of her look is not that bad as it's a different medium and not necessarily taking any sales from her.

My main gripe is that Sega have been lazy and wholesale copied quite personal moves rather more than what might come under generic disco dancing. I find it hard to understand a court didn't appreciate the gratuitous nature of the copying. SEGA should have waived costs. Bad SEGA!

  • honda honda honda honda honda it sounds like it

  • they stole from her, and got away with it, how can some small artist who was/is dissed in the general public sue a major company and win? ive never heard anyone real winning a case against a company as world wide as SEGA, they have no balls, which doesnt suprise me.

shame on SEGA, crappy shitty company.

  • sega know they damn stole miss lady kier whole likeness and then named her after her most famous sayings oh la la lalalala ulalah that why sega is in the sorry state it is today what comes around

  • Copy. Flattering though.

  • That last bit at the end was genious

I don't understand why it's a problem that they both spoofed the same thing. As a work of Satire, Space Channel 5 was, to me, a parody of the image of the 1970's as being trippy. How could SEGA hope to get laughs off of a relatively small time performer? A key thing to consider is whether Japanese audiences would recognize Kier, though.

Some things here are suspicious, but Kier cannot reserve the use of "groovy", "delight", and star glasses.

  • I think its obvious that SEGA took her likeness, style, catch phrases, dance style, and overall persona and used it for their benefit. Those who say otherwise obviouslly dont know the music or Lady Kier.If it was a spitting image of Michael Jackson dancing thriller-style to some 80s pop music, there would be no debate. She wasn't big enough to prove her point.

  • If you played the space channel 5 games you'd know that michael jackson makes appearances in them as "space michael". He requested to be added, and they coded him in.

  • erm, it dosent even look like lady kier

  • I heard that SEGA contacted Lady Kier in order to license her 'character' for the game but she refuse and SEGA released the game regardless. Then she sued them but she lost.

  • fuck sake o.o

This lady kier didnt invent this look, ulala is simply just dressed how they did in 60s-70s, also lady kier didnt make up these dance moves, theyre just dance moves, alot of people use them. Lady kier is just a one hit wonder, who is obviously running low of money so she tried to sue sega. Lady kier is just a fucking fag tbh, as if you'd sue a childrens game.

  • Was that really necessary for you to use a homophobic slur?

  • i was talking about cigarettes :>

    remember, two meanings dear

  • Quite a lot of these similarities are stretching it quite a bit...

And unless Lady Kier came up with the phrase Groovy and Ooh-La-La first you can't really attribute them as evidence of a rip-off.

I do agree that Ulala could have spawned from Lady Kier's image, but this video does little to support the point.

  • My thoughts exactly.

  • I agree that the similarities are questionable, but I'm not sure that SEGA maliciously intended to rip her off, or they wouldn't have asked her to endorse the product. The early 2000's were full of nostalgia for "groovier" times (this is when Austin Powers was at its peak popularity), and in this context Ulala is more like a tribute than anything else.

Sorry Miss Kier lost the case, but I agree with the judge here.

  • shame on SEGA, there is no way they did not rip her off. shame on the judge and jury too. keep on keepin' on Kier, you are much loved!

  • The use of "ooh-la-la" and "groove" (combined with the visual similarities) are what proves it's a direct ripoff of her.

I guess the question is whether that's legally considered fair use. I wouldn't think so, but I guess the retarded judge did.

Also, Deee-Lite's DJ was a Japanese star DJ and they were huge superstars in Japan throughout the 90s. Groove is in the Heart is in every karaoke place in Tokyo, so any Japanese person who claims he never heard of it is lying through his teeth.

  • i liked the comparison

    i didnt like the video

  • Good comparison!!

  • Woaw ! Ils se ressemblent trop =OO

  • I agree w/ you on that. I got a better question.. who would want to imitate some burned out bitch who had one hit song back in the 90's? Last time I saw her she wasn't even lookin like that she looked all FAT and washed up!! Congrats on losin your lawsuit dumbass. Its ok tho you can still get royalties from VH1 using your song in their "One Hit Wonders" countdown shows, right?? HA HA

  • owned! XD

  • whoa! they are too similar to be a coincidence. If they wanted to use her image for the game they should've askked her i mean come on you know michael jackson got paid heavily just to say a few measely lines in the game.

  • I read that they asked her, she said no and they did it anyway. She sued but she lost. I also read that Michael Jackson asked to be in, but I read this from wikipedia and I don't vouch for how true this is.

  • This is exactly right.

  • they did ask her

  • When I first saw Ulala, Lady Miss Kier immediately came to mind. I guess I thought like others that it was a flattering homage, but I can totally understand why she would sue especially after they actually tried to ask permission AFTER they'd already used her image! My entire family likes the game and we liked Sega too, but this has taken them down a notch in our eyes, and it is a travesty of justice that LMK had to pay Sega for their wrongdoing!

  • It is obvious they stole her image, moves and phrases for this damn game, and I still can't believe she will have to pay that money..it is a shame..when evidently this company called her previous to the release of this game and after she refused the offer, they released it anyways......anybody that knew Dee lite and Kirby, knows that she does not deserve this...

  • I <3 Space Channel 5! And who the fuck is Lady miss Kier?

  • Who is Debbie Harry? Who was Joey Ramone? Who is Joan Jett? Who is Johnny Rotten? Who is Patti Smith? Who is Tom Verlaine? Who is Angus Young? Who is Fred Schneider? Who is Madonna? Who is Bruce Dickinson? Who is Ozzy Osbourne?

Who was that? Well, first land on Earth.

  • I <3 Space Channel 5! And who the fuck is Lady miss Kier?

  • who the fuck are you anyways...

  • kebin131

  • Who came first? The 60's! Both Kier and the game base their styles on that decade.

  • so ture

  • I can not belive we live in a country where an INDEPENDENT ARTIST has to pay legal fees to a billion dollar corporation for obviously steaeling her image!! I am ashamed of our legal system. But then again look at our president!!!

  • Justice is not so blind as it should be.

  • Serves her right for trying to make a fuss and sue over one little franchise!

If it weren't for Space Channel 5, I would have no idea who Lady Kier was.

  • I completely agree, Never heard of the two bit wench until she tryed to sue Sega for an Awesome game.

She must be running out of money or something... After listening to her music I'm shocked she made any at all! I'm glad she lost.

If someone makes something as a tribute to you, you don't try and sue them for it. bitch.

  • Yeah! Finally someone who agrees! Sausage x2, I salute you! 8)

  • i agree wit u! lady kier as a wench. her music sux. big time.

  • Fuck you.

  • How is it a tribute if you rip someone off? STFU.

  • It's sad that Lady Kier had to pay Sega so much money. Recording artists don't make as much money as people thing they do, unless the recording artist puts out huge selling records repeatedly, like Madonna and such.

    Poor Lady Kier.

  • Lady Kier came first

  • did she fuck

  • I don't really know who she is but it is obvious that they built ulala's image from her whether they asked her or not. they fuckin ripped her off

  • Whether or not lady kier wanted to be part of the game, Sega made a fantastic homage to her. Maybe Sega should've lost the lawsuit, but in the end I'm glad we got Space Channel 5.

  • If you ask me, Lady Kier shouldn't of had to pay SEGA for legal fees.

  • I don't think it's right that she should sue. She DID infact say she wanted to be in something virtual and this game is something virtual! XD

  • Okay... I'm all for other people speaking other languages, but I don't see the point in using spanish when everyone else is pretty much speaking english in this discussion. It's kind of pointless.

  • no one is speaking honey they're typing... loka

  • Did my comment upset you so much that you felt like pointing out something so petty? My comment was valid.

  • not at all... i think Your comment was POINTLESS cuz, in case u dont know, youtube is WORLDWIDE n english is not the only language in the world (not yet) XOXO

  • Actually, I took Japanese for 7 semesters and my boyfriend is Filipino so yeah, I'm aware of other languages. But that doesn't mean I'm going to start going off in Japanese or Tagalog when everyone else is speaking English (its rude).

  • RUDE?? how so?? if the guy doesn't know english but still he wants 2 post a comment in his languague how's that rude...? ok smartie idc bout ur studies that was POINTLESS ... i live by the u of a. . . no im not trying 2 hit on u ... i have a hot bf.

  • K, it made sense for me to mention my boyfriend because it had to do with being exposed to other languages but why did you feel the need to mention yours? Hitting on me? I'm done with this conversation, you're taking it in some strange direction.

  • i said that cuz i wrote "i live by the u of a" (university of arizona)... n i know u were there... but im not trying 2 hit on u or anytng like that... thats why i mentioned my bf...

  • never noticed sega totally ripped off LK

  • LOL, I think Lady Kier should have won that case...but then...SPC5 wouldn't be so Hawt. T_T Mixed Emotions.

  • wait! delete that first comment! i meant to say she didn't!!!!!!!!!!

  • she deseved to get her butt sued!

  • MAbey you should've done research there is a site.

  • Ms. Kier claimed that SEGA offered to pay her $16,000 to license her name, image and songs for the game, but she rejected their offer. Obviously, they got the image off of her...

  • Thank you for someone who sees the real light!

  • YOU IDIOTS SEGA didn't even know about her until AFTER they created part 2, the choreographer for the dancing didn't even know about lady keir at all IT'S JUST A COINCIDENCE NOT STEELING!

  • Are you OR have you ever ben alive!!!!!!!!! How old are 12?It is STEALING!!!! There is no coincidence!!!!! It is obvious!!!She was a huge succses in Japan. Look before you speak. And further more she supports issues that will better your life, NOT SEGA!!!I hope you can wake up. I am bullet proof and I won't wear a ball and chain!!!

  • Honda and Toyota may be popular japanese names but they pretty much are telling

america to purchase these vehicles otherwise they wouldn't have released this crap to other countries. no honor.

  • DAMN!!! Thats is just.... like :o

  • a lot of the evidence was a little lame. you mean...THEY BOTH WEAR HEADPHONES!? and...and they both say "meow"!? they should have focused more on the heavy similarities.

  • OMG! is a whole copy! not only dancing moves, her pose, her voice, her friends, her words, ulala walks identically the same way as Lady kier!!!! thay couldn't invent the name at least??? if don't call her just KIER too in the game and pay her, the real kier, her own part for inventing the character.

  • Holy Crap. I'd never even heard of this chick until recently. I absolutely LOVE Ulala, her moves, and her style. To find out that she was entirely based off an actual person..freaky! I heard that she tried to sue SEGA or something, because they didn't have her permission to do that....weird O_O

  • Great vid.

Sega obviously admired Lady Kier so much that they based Ulala completely based on her, putting Lady Kier in the digital limelight. She was immortalized in a great cult classic game. Sega definitely doesn't suck, they are HUGE fans of her obviously. A great tribute.

  • OMG that's so not groovy!!

    Poor lady Kier! SEGA blows!

  • wierd.

  • of course lady kier!

  • they ripped off her style and her moves, that is so not right. Sucking Emulation Game Assholes!

  • Something smells, alright. And it ain't Dee-lish. I fucking hate Sega for doing this. They have no souls.

  • oh...phukk....just read the article about the lawsuit...lady kier got phuukkk'd.

  • looks like they ripped her off- that was very wrong.

  • ..this was spooky

  • Space Channel 5 is not a stupid game, is a not serious game just for fun.But yeah Lady Keer came first

  • oops sorry is is Lady Kier.

  • Lady Kier First. who´s the cartoon?.

  • Nothing has a meaning to file a suit.

  • selling cars within the game is exploitation

  • But you must understand, Toyota and Honda are also names of famous warriors in Japanese history. The video game never specified that it was a reference to the vechicles. Many japanese merchandise take on the names of historical figures. Regardless, I hoped that the main character of Space Channel 5 was Lady Kier, I love her music.

  • Deee-Lite's Lady Miss Kier, singer of the early 1990s club hit "Groove Is in the Heart," lost a 3-year-old court battle over the use of her likeness yesterday. The decision was a costly one for Kier--real name Kierin Kirby--as the singer/DJ has to pay more than $600,000 in legal fees to Sega of America, the game maker she sued.

  • I think Kier sued and won.I sure hope she did because the resemblance and simularities are all too obvious!

  • No, she lost the suit and had to pay Sega $608,000.

  • Lady Kier lost? SHE HAD TO PAY SEGA? THAT'S PHUCKED!!!

Sega ripped her off. From her image to her dance moves.

Sega should be paying her. How the hell is that fair?

  • I don't know. Judge just decided that way?

  • how did her lost?

  • Sega has good lawyers.

  • Good lawyers, where do you find those?

  • In Phoenix Wright games xD... j/k tho the similarities are close to being identical... can you patent a dance move and request payment from anyone that uses it ?

  • Lad! Keer PWNS all joo n00bs.

  • I love them both, Ulala and Miss Kier. And I dont think its a stupid game, its more like a non serious game :S

  • i dont want a copy, i only want the real thing. lady kier is true.

  • Grr...I wish I had that game...X( That survival mode looked purky.

  • I think its a little bit sad that those two are almost the same... but well her style just fits perfektly to Ulala ^^ (thats the only good point on it)

  • so sad ....anyway we know who came first..

one friend showed me the game i was very upset because the game is really stupid..

  • is it??

  • I am disappointed to see large corporations like Sega showing a lack of creativity through their work.

They certainly have the resources to hire creative designers with artistic integrity, as well as the strength to promote innovative and directional new games.

Kier has shown her integrity through her work, and promoted individuality and creativity throughout her career.

Unfortunately her image has been widely associated with the game.

  • Well, you know they (sega?) went to Kier asking for permission to use her image for the character. She did not grant them this, but they went ahead and used her image anyway, along with all of her dances, poses, fashions, clothes, etc. There can be no denying that it was based on her.

  • That was in 2000 and just for promotional purposes within the release of Space Channel 5 in Europe. But the game started development in 1997 without noticing annything to her, and was finally released in 1999 in Japan, with again, any kind of notification to Kier. She should have discovered that way long before she did.

  • Lady Kier came out 9 years before the game was released- fool!

  • and they didn't ask her until Space Channel 5 Part 2 came out. They asked Michael Jackson to participate, and he did. She did not. Hence, why she is not in the game--FOOL. Seriously, you know nothing about videogames, or Ulala's creation--just shut up you idiot.

  • Actually, I think Michael Jackson was the one who wanted to participate in Space Channel 5, rather than Sega wanting him in it.

  • is that true??

  • the footage of kier dates back to 90 to 95 approx.......wtf......just watch the video....they stole her image, her life, and everything she was

  • her life?? lol thats too much
