Thanks for a good video, there is just one thing that annoys me, its the belief that if you keep insulin in check, it will be better for fat loss. This simple isnt true.
"High levels of insulin are the result of obesity. They aren't the cause of obesity" (Quote from Malcom Gladwell, read his stuff for more info about the fallacy of the current weight loss culture)
Interesting video, I agree that you should not eat them on induction and if you want to start having things like low carb bars just have 2 or 3 a week when you get those bad sugar cravings.
Just out of interest do you eat things like the advantage bars bowulf ?
@cantosis2007 No, bars and shakes were something I never or have never gotten into purchasing. I was given a few for free few years ago, but those were the only ones I have ever eaten. I was never much of chocolate person, so they had no desire for me.
I'd go along with your assessment too. After Induction, if you can lose and eat 2-3 a week for convenience sake or just because they taste good, I'd say go right ahead.
Thanks for the clarification. I almost got scammed into buying a tub of "4 net carb" icecream. I'll stick to my meat and veggies and the occational SF whipped cream and SF jello dessert!!!
@PibbXtra08 It's because they are using net impact carbs and claiming glycerin or things like oligofructose don't affect blood sugar, and therefore don't count against your net carb count. I disagree with that philosophy and would still count all carbs other than fiber.
@PibbXtra08 My personal opinion is not have any bars or shakes during Induction. After Induction, you can choose for yourself and based upon your own continuing to lose whether or not to partake of these net impact carbs products. I have just seen way too many reports of stalls, and I would urge those on Induction to have the most successful weight loss as possible and avoid the most pitfalls.
Hi, I recently found a product that seems to have NEGATIVE net carbs! Question! Is this possible? Here are the the details/NUTRITION FACTS: Serving Size 1/2 cup (85g) Serving per Container about 2.5 Calories 25 Calories from FAT 0g Total Fat 0g Saturated Fat 0g Trans Fat 0g Cholesterol 0g Sodium 55 mg Total Carbohydrate 4g Dietary Fiber 5 g Sugar 0g Protein 2g BTW the product is Birds Eye Artichoke Hearts (frozen) Thanks, Tonne
@Tonneskin I think what you saw is just another example of our broken label in the U.S. They probably meant it was a total of 9g of carbs and 4 net carbs. I looked elsewhere on the Internet, and it was approximately that on those sites.
I have been using "sugar free" desserts lately and been subtracting the sugar alcohols from the Carbs (as well as the fiber) and so far I have not dropped out of ketosis. My favorite is the "mousse" by jello desserts. I have not experienced any gas or bloating, but a little gas doesn't bother me as I need to have something sweet to offset all the meat I have been eating.
@knarfster I am glad you figured out what works for you. Whenever I have had them as part of a dessert, bad things happen. If you can still lose with subtracting the SA's as well, your CCLL is probably much higher as well. As a general rule though, they do probably cause more stalls than not, but that is just my perspective.
Sooo? long story short the 18grams of carbs that are 11g sugar alcohol and 4grams fiber really only have 3 carbs right? (taking this from an atkins bar) thanx :)
In my mind, the surest method for success is 18g - 4g of fiber = 14g net carbs. Depending on the sugar alcohols, they can metabolize more or less into sugar. Some of them like maltitol are 60-75% digestible to glucose. They also can cause nasty gastointestinal side effects.
Now Atkins products are a bit better and have safer sugar alcohols, but they are still digestible to some point. I still recommend counting even them (and glycerin carbs) in the net carbs and still subtract only fiber.
Thanx for the tips I will def keep an eye on things I have had only one so far and no ill side effects. I pretty much got them to fill my carb cravings during my low GI diet but im trying to go atkins.
Thank you so much, Kent. I have restarted my Atkins journey after losing and then gaining 50 lbs. It has been one week and I'm 10 lbs down. More importantly I haven't had aspartame or caffeine for a week! Thank you so much for inspiring me. This time around I am doing induction by the book and eating real food, not "low carb" Frankenfood. The only chemical I've ingested is Splenda in my Diet Rite, 3 or fewer cans a day, of course. Sugar alcohols and aspartame totally stall me. You rock!
Very wise approach.... You are definitely doing it the way the good doc wanted it done. I have to imagine he would shocked at how his story of shop the outer edges and enjoy the phyto-nutrients has been changed. Good job on the 10 pounds!
I so glad I ran across you vlog. For years I followed one version or another of Atkins diets and heavily used artificial sweeteners. Artificial sweeteners are a deteriment to your health. Like it or not they are neurotoxins. Because of this I have suffered and am still suffering the negative side effects. Most are pesticides. Yes pesticides. Neurotoxins that can cause neurological problems, digestive disorders, brain damage, cancers, weight gain etc.. Your better off staying with whole foods.
Hey so im only 12 and i dont know if i can stick without having any sweets like sugar free ones..if i only subtract half of the sugar alcohols off and count carbs do you think i would like completly stop losing weight?
my goal is to lose 50 pounds by november (for my 13th birthday) so..what should i do?
and also i know you say the 3 sweetners limit but i put that much in a glass (2cups) of tea so..ya just give me some advice lol
You are looking at someone who swore he could never live without Diet Dew. I use to drink well over gallon per day. With Atkins I valued the benefits I was seeing more than the temporary pleasure of soda. I would suggest perhaps Atkins 2002 might be a bit too restrictive for a 13 year old, and perhaps a better course would be the Atkins for Life plan.
It is more about restricting the whites (sugar, flour, starches) in your diet while still eating roughly 80-120g per day.
As for the sugar alcohols and the sweets, I would suggest doing without them as much as possible. Focusing on natural sweets like fruits as much as possible. Do what you can and start exercising (as simple as bike riding or something fun outside), and at your age you can be successful.
I'm glad I just found this, I tried atkins and had ill effects and have been afraid to try it since, now I realize its because of all the sugar alcohol, and caffiene I was intaking.
Glad to hear you found the video helpful. There are way too many people that fall for the marketing hype and then wonder why they don't achieve the results they want.
Great video and I look forward to your next one. Hey if you get a chance, stop by my channel and check out what I have going on. Let me know when you have something up
Re: Dream Fields pasta. I've noticed many people react differently it terms of blood sugar spikes and stalling weight loss. I would suggest poeple considering adding it to their diet should closly moniter their blood sugar levels in conjunction with Ketosis strips, to see how it affects you.
Thanks for the comments... It is definitely a YMMV thing. I am typically someone who would rather eat food less processed than more, so Dreamfields is very rare occurrence for me. There are so many other ways to enjoy that pasta experience -- shirataki noodles, spaghetti squash, faux rice, etc.
I've tried the shirataki noodles...pretty good. Pretty expen$ive also. Been looking for shirataki root flour, but cant seem to find it(if it's even available).Any idea where to find it?
Sorry I have never seen it. The Shirataki noodles I purchase are $1.89 per package either at my local asian or regular grocer. That isn't way out of order, but not having to pay shipping saves a lot.
As for the flour, look for glucomannan or konjac flour, and konjacfoods sells the a pound for $19.
Thanks for the reply. Thats about what i've been paying also...but i don't have a local grocer that carries them. When ordering on-line I get jacked on shipping(about $100 mo.).
I'll GOOGLE your advice on the flour, and post back with any low-carb culinary breakthroughs... lol! Thanks again, you're dooing people a great service.
I hate very mad experiences with thouse little surger alchole candies,i gave them up.
I also expeirenced problems with diet soda's it seems the citric acid can also cause this problem...I found actually physillium husk helped regulate me
Sugar free candy isn't all that bad. I'd know I'd rather feel guilty having too many sugar-free chocolates than too many regular chocolates. My sister would have constipation problems, and the chocolates helped here where many other remedies wouldn't. Still not something to eat if you have plans for the day.
My problem is that personally they seemed like crutch or too much like my former way of eating. For me if I have a portion control problem, I would rather have it with something like nuts than SF Chocolate. If you can handle the portion control problem and the GI problems don't bother you, you can certainly try them.
Anything (convenience or treat food) that was going to possibly derail me I ate with a high degree of evaluation. It just wasn't worth it.
Hello! You are such a inspiration! I am on atkins nutritional approach. I would like to ask you how much net carbs coca-cola diet has?And coca-cola zero? I been trying to find this answer, but I still didn't have any sucess. I really would apreciate if you answered me. I would like to drink a glass of coca-cola diet once in awhile as a treat. =D
Keep up the good work of helping people taking their life back!
Thanks for your comments. I am glad people find the videos helpful.
Zero net carbs for both since both are sweetened by liquid aspartame (no fillers). I prefer Splenda sweetened drinks just because of aspartame taste and some people's negative reaction (stall) to it. If it doesn't affect you, feel free to drink it (up to 3 cans or servings per day).
Don't make you sick and don't stop your weight loss... As to how many carbs to count, they (Sugar Alcohols like Malitol) do have some glycemic index often half to 3/4ths what regular sugar does. Glycerin is apparently nil, so you don't need to count it. You'll have to find what SA these have, and figure out what the GI and count those carbs in my opinion.
Thanks for the info. I myself try to avoid those sugar substitutes, and i do apreciate you expose its shortcomings.
I whish food manufacturers would be more honest. Sugar has been getting a bad reputation, but seems its substitutes began with the wrong foot, hidding important info.
haha, i know! when i discovered those russell stovers caramel medallions i went crazy! i had the whole bag (they taste just as good as regular chocolates) but then i felt like i had serious dysentery. i was running to the bathroom every 2 min.
hi thanks for posting this info.carbs seems to be a very complex subject,i recently did a 3 day trial on 20g of carbs a day, i lost 2kg. but i did not feel good. i was just wondering what you think the carb amount should be per day? to lose weight.
I think one should start out at 20g or less per day. You will not feel good as you did, but that is your body going through glycogen depletion. Once you glycogen is gone (3-5 days at the most), you are burning almost strictly fat for energy. Your energy levels will certainly return by the end of the first week or two.
Thank you

one of the advantage bars said
-22 carbs
-10 fiber
-1 sugar
-0 sugar alcohols
but it says only 2 net carbs how is this? was it misprinted and should say 10 sugar alcohols? because it says 0 sugar alcohols

I agree their side effects can be evil. :-) If you need a chocolate fix, here is a good post-Induction chocolate fix:
2 TBS butter (melted)
1/2 Cup Peanut Butter
1/4 cup Splenda
1 cup Chocolate Whey (Isopure is best)
1/4 cup Vanilla SF syrup
Split into 2 bars and freeze.
