I am not sure if Japanese peoples' phonics have changed in 130 years, and I don't know when the first sound recordings were made of Japanese speech, either. But, I know what we hear today, and modern Japanese must make some changes if they want to communicate globally in English. I hope my ideas help!

It's very nice video to teach Japanese people how correctly pronouce English words or sentences, using our Japanese culture 'katakana' efficiently. Now we make many mistakes while pronouncing English in terms of the sound because of the wrong expression in 'katakana', so you're right.
As you say, "R" pronunciation is the most difficult one for Japanese people. But you taught me to add "う" sound to the beginning. Now I can say "Rough" loudly when I buy stones from English speakers. Thank you Chris!!!
