I love the picture of him; his eyes bore right through with a cool kind of intelligence. One of my favorite songs of his, too. Thanks for posting this!
I love Gordon and Dylan equally. I consider them to not only be different genres, but different roles. Bob was a poet that put music to his verses. Gordon was a songwriter, combining music and verse into a totally different form. His songs were designed as songs, not as political statements. Bob was the voice of a generation, his songs railing against the establishment to anyone who would listen. In the end, Bob's themes will be as timeless as Kerouac, but Gordon's songs will be beautiful.
THIS SONG HAS ALWAYS TORN ME UP INSIDE, ESP WHEN HE SAYS, "THIS OLD AIRPORTS GOT ME DOWN, ITS NO EARTHLY GOOD TO ME, I'M STUCK HERE ON THE GROUND, JUST COLD AND DRUNK AS I CAN BE, YOU CANT JUMP A JET PLANE, LIKE YOU CAN A FREIGHT TRAIN, SO I BEST BE ON MY WAY, IN THE EARLY MORNING RAIN. IF YOU’VE EVER EXPERIENCED THIS FEELING, THE DAMPNESS, THE EMPTINESS, THE LOSS, THE TIREDNESS AND EXHAUSTION OF THE MOMENT, YOU’LL KNOW THAT HE NAILS IT A LITTLE TOO CLOSE TO THE HEART. NO MOVIE CAN EVER MATCH IT
Gord is the very definition of Folk Singer/Songwriter. If you consider Dylan in another genre that is. Gord never sold out except in concert. With a lyrical poetry and a great ear for an acoustic vista, he'll send your thoughts back there… His "Gord's Gold" album is a must.
Gordy's songs are big not only in English speaking nations. I go to Asia a lot and everytime I walk in a shopping mall I usually hear one of hsi songs, If U could read my mind, Sundown or Carefree Highway are the 3 most heard.
awesome singer/ songwriter . Saw Gordon live in concert 3 times already. Loved the shows and even got chance to talk with him. great guy !!!!! We met in new jersey.
@krm1videotron1ca I don't know where you get the "unrecognized Canadian classic, same as the singer! Lightfoot was one of the top dogs in the '60s in the U.S.--and in the rest of the English speaking world, for that matter--right up there with Bob Dylan. "Early Mornin' Rain" was right up there with the rest of the songs getting air play at the time, too. In fact, there are Lightfoot songs that were very popular then that are completely forgotten now. "Early Mornin' Rain" is NOT one of them.
@ThomasASwilling I would add, too, that Gordon Lightfoot was probably THE single greatest force in fostering friendly relations between Canadian and U.S. citizens at the time. He made people on both sides of the border feel connected through his music. That is hardly unrecognized. Among Canadians and U.S. citizens around my age, that feeling of camaraderie still exists after all these years. Put that in your smoke and pipe it.

@ThomasASwilling Totally agree with you Thomas! in fact.. after listening to the "Evis" version.. it's clear he was outclassed by the song.
@krm1videotron1ca I don't think you really know much about Gordon's music..

This is actually the Gord's Gold version - my favorite one :)
