everyone has to listen to him knowing that he won 11 rings...players lyk lebron kobe wade howard dont care bout stats...dey all care bout winning championship/s...having russell giving u tips is a blessing
It's obvious that Dwight hasn't improved his game because he's still reliant on dunking. The fact that he hasn't added 1 go to move in 7 years is amazing.
In your opinion Russell wanna lose time with a fool like Andersen?
Russell talk with Howard only because he knows he will become an Hall Of Famer... if he would speak only choosing the best shotblocker he would speak with Andersen and Okafor
boston needa give dwight a contract a big one, once they have dwight man o man more championships for boston... they needa steal d-how from magic, but this year its lakers baby...
I't can happen if the 2 of boston's big three retires. But i think getting paul is'nt a good move. You already have rondo. I think if KG retires they should get DH.
Um yeah not better than hakeem, sure the dream only had like two or 3 titles but common it was russell's teammates who really helped him out. sure clyde and chuck gave the dream help but i have no idea why it wasnt enough.
dwight howard.. lebron... carmelo... wade... they're all young.. and look at how they r playin rite now... WOW imagine couple years from now wen they ARE in their primes.. it would be really scary =]
Yea I have seen him play. He should be averaging 5 blocks and 15 rebounds a game easily being the most dominant inside player in the league. Its not how good you are but how good whether you live up to your potential.
he averaged 13 rebounds a game and you act like he's in his prime...he's only 22 years old...He is the youngest player in the nba history to average at least 10.0 rebounds in a season and youngest NBA player ever to record at least 20 rebounds in a game...not to mention he's made the all-nba 1st team ...so to be only 22 i think hes living up to his potential pretty well...
He is not living up to his potential, he does not have the mean streak YET. If you really knew what you were talking about you would know he has a long long way to go, especially with his intensity. He isnt half the player shaq was in his years with orlando, and its only because of his temperment.
know u dont know wat your talking about...hes the youngest player to ever win the rebounding title meaning he did something shaq didnt do..and like i said before he's only 22...so hes has plent of time to develop a man streak as u say...even though he already has one
You have no idea what you are talking about, he still acts like a little kid at times. I dont question his ability, just his intensity. He just doesnt have it!! He should be averaging several more rebounds and a few more blocks per game considering his athletic ability and skill set.
you dont know wat your talking about...the fucking guy is a beast and your just a fuckin hater.theres a reason why he commands double teams...and many analyst are calling hime the most dominant center shince shaq...stop fuckin hating...and wasting my time...with your bullshit excuse of why hes not good..because the stats are there he made the all nba team...sooo i rest my case...
It depends on how you look at it. How well Howard is playing or how well he could be playing... He is an absolute freak specimen and I have to admit he is playing better as of late. However, I still say he lacks that killer instinct the best big men have.
DWIGHT HOWARD IS A BEAST OF A MAN!!!Oden will...might be good but all this talk of him being BETTER than Howard is just stupid...its like saying Matt Ryan will be the best qb ever...IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO TELL!!!he was good in college but how will he amount in the pros???ONLY time can tell.
ok maybe u havent seen oden lol? hes a beast. Hes only like 7 foot so yea hes big but not insanely tall like yao. I dont think you can really call him "fragile" if you saw what he did at ohio state. Dont get me wrong, im not hating on Dwight Howard, believe me hes my favourite player, but theres talk of oden being able to play small forward after a few years in the nba, so you cant really compare two different positions.
howard has a potential to be great but i doubt he will ever be better then russell. hmm... russell was not much smaller then howard as i can see on this vid.
yukuhawa: I think oden is a great player and insanely talented, however he has a freakish body and from people who have that kind of size(ex. bill walton and Yao Ming) are fairly fragile, this makes me reluctant to say he'll be better then dwight howard, who is still far from his potential.
It's good seeing legends like Bill Russell talk to young cats like Dwight Howard because moments like that stick with those younger players and hopefully Dwight Howard'll continue to develop into a complete player and a good role model.
And Russell was right: Dwight "Superman" Howard's got everything he needs to be a really great basketball player.
true but he had Bob Cousy....who was the best pg at the time...i know bird had parish and mchale but they're not as good as cousy..also Larry Bird is know as the greatest in boston....idk Between Bill and Bird.
its hard to say because its not like Larry didn't have some star players backing him up either. Larry had a superstar lineup with Parish crashing the boards and Mchale posting up.
Yeah man Russell is the greatest celtic by far. its not that he had cousy its more like cousy had russell. the way russell played never really required any help from other players becuase he was always on the defensive end. Russell would just block and rip the boards and throw an outlet to cousy. It's not like Russell scored alot.
I can't help but wonder if Russell really likes Dwight. Russell was known to have a deep distrust of the media (like Kareem) and fans, and that's really the opposite of Dwight.
Russell actually became part of the media later in his career as a broadcaster. He played in a turbulent time and was treated very badly by a lot of the racist media back in the day. I think he likes and respects Howard, trust me..if Bill doesnt like someone you and they will know it..LOL.
haha yea it was dr. j..............when they announced russell everyone cheered..........poor Dr. J though i would never boo a legend like him......hes like the original "air".........without him dunking would be no where near where it is today
Yeah, shame that the injuries have crippled LA. However, they have a great core group that can be at the top of the game for quite a while. Kobe is just hitting his 30's which is really prime in my opinion(because experience catches up with physical ability),Fisher a great leader and clutch player and now with Bynum(will be the best center in the NBA in a year or two)and Gasol..wow,the sky is the limit.
lol, less competition. There were less teams which meant there was more competition. It wasn't watered down. I suppose Jerry West, Oscar Robertson, and Wilt Chamberlain weren't competition?
I am a huge Howard fan, but if you say Bill Russell had lesser competion, then you never saw any of his match ups with Wilt the Stilt. Howard will never face anyone like him. Bill Russell is the man in my book. He was the athlete of the decade in the 1960's, not just the basketball player of the decade. If I were starting an NBA Team with former and current players in their prime, I would start with Bill Russell.
I agree. He had a bad break this year but I think he'll bounce back. It also helps that Portland has a strong team and he won't have to shoulder the load by himself once he returns.
why is a 20 yr old commenting(dumbly, i might add) on russell?!?!? the nba was WAY rougher then. youcould hand-check and fight a lot. the nba is more civilized now. kinda weak.
I think Bill, Wilt, and Kareem, are the best ever. Looking at the amount of rings is deceptive. Looking at things that way would mean that Robert Horry is better than Michael Jordan. It's the teams that stars happen to be on that make rings.
you gotta think though that without russell the celtics woulda been down the drain. if it wasnt for russell theres no doubt that west or chamberlain would have more rings. but russell was the best defensive player to ever play the game. if i were to ever make a dream team i would rather have russell over chamberlain because he actually helped and only cared about his team winning.
One question. Do you think he could do it in today's times? Against Kareem? Ewing? Shaq? I don't think he was powerful enough to stop Shaq. No one was. What about the dream? How many dominant centers were in the game when he was dominating? I myself, don't know about that era.
i do! i remember the game THEN. the game was rougher, you could hand check, no ticky tack fouls, no three point line, no charge circle, none of that. throw in your typical racist people of the era, and you get the picture. how would russell fare? VERY WELL. he was a student of defense!
I believe he would fare well, no doubt because he's a legend, but what I'm saying is it depends on what era a player is in. I don't believe he would've had 11 rings if he'd collided with Jordan, Magic, or Bird. He would've had to split some of those titles with them. Heck Shaq and Kobe could've gotten some. I still wish they would've never split up.
If he played in Bird/Magic/MJ era then we would be able to appreciate more of his genius and character. No offense to 80's/90's but Russ had more problems than showing up to a news conference in shiny shoes and a neck tie. The real question is if you move a Bird/Magic/MJ back to the 60's do you think they'd win 11 titles under the circumstances that Russell went through?
personally i do think he could still do it in today's times.......everyone thinks Russells talent is strictly defensive which is true......but russells most overlooked trait is his smarts.......the man was a genious on the court.....when he was playing he was known as a "player coach".....having smarts is one thing that can outlast any era....today when players block they just overpower it taht the ball goes flying in the crowd......but russell not only blocked it but he tried to grab it as well
Brother, you couldn't have stated it any better! First misconception, ignorant people say that Russell was only 6'9", that's funny in this clip, Russell is what, 74 years old (he was born in 1934) and he's looking Dwight Howard who is 7' almost eye-to-eye! I'm 35 and still play and coach the game, and one thing I tell players all the time is the game 75% mental!, and Russell by far, was one of the most intelligent players and persons for that to ever play basketball!
Docs the man I'm so happy for him. Dwights quite lucky to be told by someone like Bill that hes got the potential to be a really great bball player. Dwight will hold this words close to him I bet.
hahah Bill was about to give Dwight the most important advice he'd ever get but Doc interrupted him and perhaps ruined what would be a life-changing tip
oh fo show D12 gone be a Celtic in hot minute Celtics Hoo Rah!!!

Saw another clip where Mr. Russell specifically pointed out to Howard that he should always, if possible, look to block a ball to his teammate.
Howard has persisted in looking to block the ball as hard as he can out of bounds.
He had the chance to learn from the greatest, yet still seems more concerned with his ego.
He's young. Maybe he will mature.
If not, he'll never be the player he could be.

Dwight will hold this words close to him I bet.

tmac1631 4 years ago
Dwight is a little taller but Bill measured 6'9.5" back in the 60's. Dwight measured 6'9" barefoot in 2004.

It's kind of ironic that they'd post this video and leave out the actual advice.

hahah Bill was about to give Dwight the most important advice he'd ever get but Doc interrupted him and perhaps ruined what would be a life-changing tip
BraceFaceResponds 4 years ago 4
That was hillarious. Doc was serious too. He doesn't want Dwight to dominate even more.
