I think they are both in better voice here, especially Carreras, than at the MET Centennial Gala, which was in 1980.( date?) His voice is so much clearer here.

Jose has it everything, of course, not only charm and angel´s voice, but also impeccable looks. I look for the general impression of a singer´s performance, not if he now and then sings or doesnt sing a high note, and jose carreras has so much passion when singing, such sweet voice, he expresses so much emotion with his voice, why to talk about his higs c´s or technique so much?

some singers arent slim, yet they have a great voice and much of charm... so there is quite enough for me to admire, such as Caballé. if there is an opera singer who is like caballe than he or she can be overweight:-) i don´t mind if he or she sings like she does.

I am getting quite tired of hearing people remarking about Caballe's size!! criticize the singing if it is not to your ear but not what she looks like. opera is about listening and admittedly Caballe was never a great physical actress but vocally few can surpass her and if you look at her face the eyes tell such a lot!! she was one of the most important voices in opera and her legacy is unique, brava Montse!!!!!!!!

Wow, exciting but uneven. Caballe is superb, despite her obvious physical unsuitability to the role, the horrible wig, the mature age. Carreras, even in young age, seems strained, cannot sustain the slow tempo (yes, VERY slow), and avoids the high note in the last "Amor!".

Definitely this was too much for Carreras, you can see him really but really uncomfortable, his voice is just not there. Caballe did this really well, it is very hard.

I agree; he skips parts at the ends of phrases for some necessary rest to enter the next phrase.

The conductor could have helped both a bit though; the tempo is extremely low which makes it quite difficult to sustain....

Yes, Carreras pushs. The term "spinto" as I'm sure your know means push. That's what this music demands. If you can't bear his singing, listen to someone else. Caballe was at one time the best soprano in the world. Sadly she declined with age, but here she is still very credible.

True, but there are choices a singer makes that affect the longetivity of their art. Virginia Zeani once told me that she doesn't understand how Del Monaco was able to sing but she would never advise a young tenor to do what Del Monaco did. Singing incorrectly, limits how long you can continue.

This is one of the heaviest duets in the Italian repertoire. Normally the part of Chenier is associated with tenors like Del Monaco, Corelli, Tucker, or Vickers. Here Carreras, singing over his head, shows them what a beautiful lyric voice can do in this music.
