"That's The Way Love Goes" is an excellent song to use as a measure of how much Sierra's voice has improved, as it has been a standard song on her setlist from at least 2006 (when this version was recorded, when she was 14) through the present day.
Her little-girl voice is quite evident here. In the latest version, her voice is fuller, with a richer timbre and a hint of virbrato. Her presentation of songs such as these is deeper and more emotive than in years past, as well.
She couldn't have been more than 15 in this video. Saw her at Huck Finn the past two years and, wow, she sounds awesome, including her voice. When enjoying music, listening to someone comparing the performer to someone else is like going to the movies with someone who read the book. A bit of advice - never go to the movies with someone who read the book!
Anyone who thinks that Sierra's voice can be compared to Allison's is deluding themselves.Lets be honest, her voice is flat and oftentimes off key.No amount of coaching will bring it up to Allison's level.Reddragon says her voice is at best average.Sadly I say that her voice is below average. There's no question that she is a major mandolin talent and a fine young woman but as a stand alone bluegrass front person...forget it.
At the time this was recorded, her vocals were still developing. Today she can sing on key, in tune, just not as strongly as Alison K. These days (2009) her singing has gotten better and more mature - while her mando playing is untouchable. Anyone who's seen her live in concert knows what a great talent she is - and now she's got a 2nd lead singer with Clay Hess (her own Dan T.) Sierra's a major talent on the rise, and heir to Alison's crown as the Queen of Bluegrass. You heard it here first!
i agree with everything you just said! im going to see her for the second time this week and her vocals are going to be better than Alison when she gets a few years older. i mean look at Alison from, Too Late To Cry to Lonely Runs! Sierra is a remarkable musican...
I have seen this young lady twice live and she is a performer well beyond her years. There is nothing wrong with her voice now and she will only get better. I had the chance to talk to her after both shows along with her mom, she is very down to earth and polite. The banner at this show says Master Musician Festival that certainly fits Sierra.
If you have opportunity to see her go! If you don't have here CD its well worth it and available on Itunes.
Sierra will just keep getting better and better. At least when she sings.. she has soul... I expect one day she will be a killer vocalist... give her a break.. she's still young.
I'm 1000% with "tubbyteleman's" thinking about the comments of others. Those that indeed "can't tune a radio," or a mando, banjo, or guitar, (I checked 3 vids, NOT what I'd call good,) shouldn't be so quick to criticize those with true talent. This young lady is just awesome. I love the vids of her onstage with Allison. Thanks for sharing.
I read the comments about Sierra hulls vocals posted here and had to laugh. This kid has accomplished more and her short music career than most musicians will ever do in a life time. As for guys like Justdobbs... are you kidding me. I listened to his video's and this guy couldn't tune a radio! Sheeze give me a break!
I love that I think Sierra has an AMAZING voice and os does alison krauss(justdobbs) i do think that her voice will get better like alison krauss' did but it is wounderful and unique not something u hear alot. I do personaly think that she has gotten better form 15 to 17 i can tell a difference but i love to listen to both, the newer and the older!
Not everyone is cut out to be a lead singer. The best thing Sierra can do is find a top lead singer (like Allison Krauss found Dan Trymanski), sing harmony (and OCCASIONAL lead) and do what she does best: play mandolin in a bluegrass band.
Yep. I agree with some others here. She's a very good musician but I'm not even sure if her voice is average. She has trouble maintaining pitch and is flat quite a bit. I'm not trying to be insulting. Not everyone is a singer. Unfortunately, a lot of kids get pushed into singing by their parents even when they are weak in that area but strong instrumentally. She may improve as she's still young.
You guys gotta be kidding! I am sure this is a wonderful person and she sure is an amazing musician but let's be real...her singing is at best average!
You should be sorry. Coming on here and insulting Sierra. I Don't see you hanging out with Alison Krauss and Tony rice etc. I Don't see you playing at the IBMA's every year. So yes, you should be sorry.
I am indeed sorry if you are under the impression I was attempting to insult Sierra! I was criticizing sycophant behaviour of people like you, just unrealistically calling every thing a person does brilliant! I feel that actually cheapens the very real accomplishments of , for instance, Sierra, of whom I said she is obviously and undoubtably an amazing musician and she also seems a nice person!
I agree. Give credit where credit is due. Bluegrass singer/musicians like Allison or Rhond Vincent have it all. Seirra cant sing. Period. At least not on this video. Having said that, she is still under 20 I believe. As her musicianship matures, nobody will be able to hold a candle to her. She is part of a younger generation of bluegrass musicians that are absolutly off the chart.
It's true. Sierra will improve as she gets older, but for the life of me I can't figure out why you think she can't sing in the video. I've heard the song sung by lots of different people and this version by far the most beautiful version I've ever heard.
I think she sings very well .......
