I just heard the Unthanks song about the female coalminer via the Guardian website. I found it moving. This is the second song I've listened to. Again, it's moving. I live abroad and have been really homesick recently. I often find it hard to pinpoint Englishness. Dickens helps. But this music helps. The images are lovely. I adore the accents of the sisters and the way you can hear their accents in their singing. Beautiful, simple, moving stuff.

Brilliant! I only saw the Unthanks for the first time ever on LWJH last night. I can only compare them to Lindisfarne and some of Jethro Tull. Thanks for the posting. The photos are excellent too and nicely convey the sense of the song.

I was looking for scenes from the Maxwell Anderson play WINTERSET, and instead I found Rachel Unthank and The Winterset. Never heard of them before, but after listening to just a couple of songs, I'm hooked. It's beautiful music! Lovely harmony. Talented ladies, particularly when they sing a cappella. Since hearing this on the Radcliffe and Maconie show the other day whilst driving down from Scotland I have listened to it every day, and have been to HMV to buy the CD's - who says that you tube and downloads etc are killing music.
