Looks like you got the Resistance glitch on Reuben - he's supposed to be strong against fire damage, but he wasn't during that boss fight.

atlest namco with the tales games [ symphonia and abyess] can make non random encouters work by haveing them move. it also works in baten kaitos and xenosaga. lesson learned leave non random encouter games to namco.
