I LOVE both : Monzon & Alagna here are realy GREAT ---- wath an amazing rendition ---- wath an achievement ---- It is difficult to get such great Artists and here they are : we are lucky we can see this Video !!!
Roberto Alagna is superb! Brings tears to my eyes. We saw him in Carmen recently in our local Cinemark theater, LIVE from New York Lincoln Center, thanks to FathomEvents(dot)com All the Met performances are wonderful, but he is my very favorite. See him in the wonderful Don Carlo in December with Encore in January. We've seen it before and will see it again because Roberto Alagna is spectacular in it. Gorgeous music - beautiful royalty costumes and staging. You will love it!
Alagna does not turn his characters into "pampered brats" - Don Jose is a passionate & obsessed man who is driven by passion to kill the one he loves - and Alagna shows us magnificently with his acting & singing what passion in opera is all about.
This lady is really something!! And not in a good sense at least in this scene. The voice is all over the place and she's almost never sings the "right" notes, it's all either sharp or flat..hard to hear that kind of singing. But she looks great. Mr. Roberto is as usual sharp on the high notes, what a shame.
Quelle diction !!! Si seulement l'ensemble des chanteurs pouvaient avoir cette qualité d'interprétation. Merci monsieur Alagna pour cette belle leçon : une grande simplicité apparente qui cache un vrai travail d'orfèvre !!!
Wonderful. Gorgeous voices, and in such exquisite contrast too.
You know, whether he intends it or not, Alagna's performance somehow always seems to turn his characters into pampered brats pouting about their fates... Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, seeing as most tenor characters make sense in that interpretation. *g*
Although he is a lyric tenor who has to give it all for it, he keeps it up all the way through. If this harms him it's not for me to judge and thus I find his performance of a high level.
She misses the overtones most of the time which makes her sound dangerously under the key. I dont know her other performances but this sounds like she needs a rest.
I agree Uria-Monzon isn't very good and she is not a mezzo she's a soprano dramatico. She artificially inflates her voice to sounds mezzo it is a shame because the timber is lovely but she is going to wreck her voice if she carries on like that! She continualy scoops the notes it's painful!
Oh My! This interpretation is really the best one I've ever seen. Every word, gesture, join the music for dramatic purpose within a perfect rendition of this Bizet's work. Nothing is missing. Good job, honestly.
I know that begging doesn't work too well in general, however, if I were in her shoes and Alagna was pleading with me, I'd say, "yes, I adore you Roberto...I mean "Jose", I'll go with you anywhere."
Alagna is one of my favourite singers, but I think a role of Don Jose is a bit too dramatic for him.Unfortunately he pushes and forces his voice too much. But still great, no doubt.Uria Monzons timbre and breath technique unacceptable.
Excellent singing, great acting... Dramatically, I like how Alagna accentuates the contrast between his delusional begging before the first chorus that alerts him to Escamillo and afterwards when he becomes more desperate and disturbed. Passionately sung by both, especially from 'Ainsi, le salut de mon âme'.
Berganza played her as a coquette. Monzon plays her as a tigress and the 'muscular' way of singing works perfectly. She is beautiful enough to pull it off, and it is not HER that needs to sing beautifully (in this scene anyway) it is the Jose, and Alagna is just a little inelegant for me. Frequently pitchy, thank god he can act. I think Monzon is remarkable and her recording is excellent. Lovely to hear the music sung by a French singer.
WOW!! I had never had the chance to hear Alagna in such a passionate rendition. What a wonderful diction in the French language. As far as she is concerned, I don't like her part. She is overly dramatic as to destry the beautiful melodic yet dramatic lines. Berganza could sing the written notes and add dramatism. Bravo Alagna!
Uria-Monzon does not seem up to the challange of Alagna's full bodied singing, and resonant gorgeous legato. Although many say that he pushes the voice too much, he makes a fine Jose here by any standard.
pales into comparison when compared to Jonas Kaufmann at ROH 2006!

Carmen's death, a little over-acted, don' t you think so?
