The couples got married to be given extras, like housing. The women agreed to marry but mostly for convenience. Could be the men who didn't get married wanted the sex the others would get or the men decided to take what the women were not willingly offering. Or a little bit of both. Can anyone who read the book give more insight into the group rape?

@RandomlyAqua Same - I felt sick and angry. But what made me cry was the faces of the women afterwards. The victims who were powerless to get justice. You can punish someone for a crime, but you cannot retrieve a person's dignity and confidence.

BTW, they really buttfucked Governor Philip's character in this. The real Philip would never have just allowed it to carry on, and he wouldn't have built a gallows after the incident. The gallows was there from the start, and Philip hated it.

Gees, God, life must have been very tough and complicated back than. To get married on a random person you've never met or known in your life is...like meeting a stranger and these days, you can have all the time in you want to meet whoever you wants and if you don't like that person, move on. @iridescentblue yes and no. i did hear that in some Indigenous tribes it was the practice to steal women from other tribes to be wives. I've heard of some cultures where that has simply become a dramatic ceremonial practice (they'd already talked to the women beforehand) but I imagine it came from a practice where the women weren't happy to be taken.
