I'll take one of those good wage, union protected, manufacturing jobs please... I'd be proud to be a part of a group of workers who could build such a beautiful automobile! Then, with my good wages I could save up and buy one of those beautiful Buicks... Except, I don't want an Invicta. I want a deuce and a quarter! I want an Electra 225! A convertible too... I can just picture myself cruising up and down LakeShore Drive for a taste of Chicago. Boy, working people's lives suck, compared to then!
Automotive factories are a marvel, I've seen the Corvette factory in action a few years back. Unfortunately new cars are too dinky, too boring, and too powerless. Also unfortunate is that Detroit still has to pay uncompetitive wages to workers who are literally doing something a monkey could be trained to do, since the process is now so automated
the cars of today are soul-less plastic-cubs, designd and built by computers, covered with a little emotion by the engineers of today. cars like the buick are designed by people with heart and soul: raymond loewy, harley earl, virgil exner, richard teague and many more. they sad things like "let them look if they want to hurt you". but the most people want cheap cars to drive from point a to b, and the today cars are the result. so sad.... =(
@taylorgpa I wouldn't say better quality or reliablility. i would say newer cars are safer and featherlites compared to the monsterous beasts that buick made. nobody today puts engines as big as these in cars any more. V8 6.7 Liter ? 445 ft/lbs of torque? new cars are a lot less powerful but have smaller bodies to acomodate. we have a 59 buick, body is rough but everything still works! sat in a garage for last 20+ years. ive taken a liking to fixing it up and am surprised everything still works!
@taylorgpa they just dont make them like that any more. interiors are all plastic and engines are a mere fraction of the 400+ cubic inches that the 59 buicks had. all the power windows still work. everything on these cars were built to last forever.
The canted headlights did make this car look angry - but it was like nothing else on the road! I was born in early 1960, and in 1963 my father built a 1/25 AMT model of this Buick for me. I got a new one off ebay with the same box and all - what a classic! I LOVE this car!
It's not just the frame, It was the last respectible V-8 full-sized rear wheel drive sedan. Under powerd, but Ford has mostly produced small displacment sedans since well...WWII flattys were only 239 cid Y blocks only grew to 292 unless u had a bird. couple big FE's but they didn't last to long.302's in them big pigs of the late 60's early 70's. guess it evens out when a 281(4.6) makes better power than a 429.
when I was a kid my great aunt had one of these cars. It was absolutely "massive". As a passenger riding in it, it felt more like you were on a train than in a car
They can. You just have to get rid of about 75% of the federal goverment, 100% percent of the UAW labor union, and enough of the stupid people in this country to keep the bleeding heart liberals out of American legislature and taxation. Quite simple, really.
@GregoryHalo3 Listen ''dumpass" if you go out of your way to attack someone in a poorly made sentence than obviously your the dumbass for wasting your time... although I shouldn't waste my time with someone who has "Halo3" in their name and has favorites crammed with ghetto garbage.
@HaguSlayer If you are going to have a debate with someone, you should probably do it if the comment is not oer 2 years old- I think you missed the entire point- Do you remember when GM ask the government for bailout money and the Obama administration slid in and took a percentage of the company as ownership? Well THAT is what the friendly banter between me and probably everyone else was about. As far as my logic goes, I could ask you the same question. Do YOU??
@Rtfune The Obama administration bailed out GM with taxpayer money. Of course they had to take a percentage, GM needed a slap on the wrist. Ford did not require a bailout because they did not hustle car buyers like GM did.

I think the fifties were the best looking cars, but no doubt in my mind the cars built today are much better quality and reliability.

Though I guess I'm a bit biased, since I own a 1959 Buick myself.

1959 was'nt the best looking year for GM but the cars were very interesting to look at. The 1957s were alot better looking-to me at least.
