I agree that Andrew Bird is super talented and I love his music- it takes real skill to make loops that are tight enough to be played with a drummer. However, as a guitar player, I do think think his guitar solos tend to be a bad idea. While sometimes he displays clever musical ideas, his lack of technical facility on guitar often make for solos that don't actually add to what he's trying to do.
Its interesting that you say this. I've played blues, Jazz, classical, rock, metal and tango and I happen to think that Andrew Bird is one of the worlds better guitarists purely because he plays the music and doesn't waste his time with sweeps, hammerons and pulloffs and tremolo bar whammying and two hand tapping.
He just plays the right fucking notes.
He's also been touring for more than 10 years after having graduated with honours in violin performance.
Usually he does... this solo is weak. And one of the world's better guitarists? There are plenty of players who manage to put the right notes in the right places and have good technique. I'd definitely call him one of the worlds better performers, his music is creative, unique, and fun... I don't know about one of the worlds better guitarists though- he's certainly a more accomplished violinist and whistler.
Well I think his guitar playing is interesting more in its' relation to the music as opposed to the technique, sort of similar to Kurt Cobain. because as far as technical skill goes, Cobain was definitely not very impressive, but both of them are incredibly impressive songwriters and performers. The main difference between the two is that Cobain never really went for too many solos. Personally, I think Andrew Bird is a little more refined in his playing usually, but...yeah.
@dancetoska I can possibly compare the two in something similar to the manner in which I just compared the two. I don't mine was an unreasonable comparison. It was used to provide support to an argument of mine and I think it served it's purpose and I don't see it as an insult to either artist.
Andrew Bird is a gift to music... when it comes to talent he's 1000x times better than any of the retarded bullshit you see or hear on Vh1 or MTV. Good music unfortunatley might never be popular again. Oh well, youtube makes up for that
wtf is all this BS about how "technical" this guy Bird here is. that shit doesn't matter. You could have the most overly complicated sounding song but still end up sounding like utter horse crap. Its all about how the music makes YOU feel whether it be terribly simple or complicated. The only area that this Technical mastery of music would apply is in the study of how music works, where Technical skill actually plays a role in learning and developing a musicians ability.
What a lovely sound indeed.. As for the debate concerning his technical abilities... Try whistling, singing, playing violin and glockenspiel in the same song. He's a Susuki method kid and it shows. Absolutely fabulous and original.
He's inventive and creative enough that he doesn't have to be particularly good at any of the instruments he plays (in terms of technical skill) which I respect a lot.
What? How can you say that? He- or any other musician for that matter- HAS to be good at his instruments in order to enable him to be creative. And he is good at his instruments, you can't deny that.
He clearly has an incredible grasp on music, I'm not trying to argue that. And he may be an amazing technical musician as well, but from what I've seen he's not going to be remembered as a great instrumentalist. More likely, he'll be remembered for his inventiveness and songwriting skill. If I had to compare him to anyone else, in that respect, I'd compare him to someone like Kurt Cobain -incredible ability to write music, amazing voice, mediocre guitar player. But neither of them need tobegood.
Don't be fooled. Creative songwriting can cause a disparity when it comes to showcasing technical skill. Andrew Bird is has a degree in violin performance from Northwestern University and his skill is NOT to be discounted.
It's sort of like how Regina Spektor is a classically trained pianist, but her PERSONAL style often leans toward quirky, simple tunes. After all, a good artist has to know the rules to break them.
i don't think he's the greatest guitar soloist -- i've definitely heard better from him on violin, but i have heard some really strange and inventive things on guitar from him. he's obviously projecting his overall music skill onto it.
La finesse de Jeff Buckley, l'électricité de Jimi, le groove d'un jazzman... qu'est-ce que j'oublie ? Ah oui! Et Andrew Bird, le petit oiseau... it "socks" ;)
I saw Bird in Philly last year... amazing by the way... and an amp blew on this song! The bass player had to adjust by switching to keyboards. It was really impressive.
Andrew is amazing but we cant forget how sick this drummer is.

A throwback (in a good way) to the 60's. Reminds me of "It's A Beautiful Day"s David LaFlamme circa 1968.
