The clipping rule says you can't hit the guy "at or below theknees". Watch this video frame-by-frame and you'll see that Marchand didn't come anywhere near Salo's knees.
Johnny Bucyk was a master of the hip check, and also a two-time Lady Bing winner, but if his hip checks were judged by this standard he'd be considered a goon.

However where my disagreement come in is that you can not allow a player to do this in one game and then suspend another player in a following game. The NHL come across inconsistant when this happens. I think Shanahan is great, however this was an inconsistant call compared to all the previous simular plays that went uncalled out by the NHL.

Another example of a guy not protecting himself in the NHL. Marchand's hip was right under Salos hip not his knee. Excellent execution, If Salo is coming in like that he gets it. Same as guys turning their back knowing you can't hit from behind put themselves in a vulnerable position. Take away the hitting from behind turn back to boarding/charging, make the ice surface bigger ad reconsider the red line.. Come on guys stop putting yourselves in vulnerable positions.
