Drakenstein is a sanctuary for lions and they do a wonderful job and provide great care for these lions. The Born Free Foundation (founded by Virginia McKenna, who played Joy Adamson in the movie Born Free and was also a close personal friend of George Adamson) is supportive of the work Drakenstein does. Please think before making comments.
Thank you for the good work you are doing with these magnificent animals who have had to deal with so much unkindness and cruelty at the hand of human beings. Thank you so much and we can also help - even in a small way.
I have to react! This is NOT a canned hunting facility (read the website properly). The lions are NOT in small cages. This is a sanctuary for mostly European lions rescued from appalling conditions. One of them is Brutus, a French circus lion. He has a badly healed broken jaw, and no claws. He lived in a nightmare for years, but now he lives closes to what he can be as lion! Now that is what I call a happy ending :-)
I visited the park in January 2010, what an experience, you guys there are doing a wonderful job. Everybody visiting the Paarl Wine farms must come and visit you aswell.
A really good thing for these poor animals! I just watched a show, a few minutes ago about canned hunting and I couldnt stop crying. I cant understand, how people can shot animals without a real reason! If you shot deer prob., then you can eat them [nevermind im a vegetarian and would never just think about that] but just for fun!? Of course, this is not like their free life... but if you would just let them free, they would have no chance. they have no idea how to fight or haunt... great job!
The stupidity of some individuals that post on here really makes me wonder. The park does fantastic work in giving these beautiful creatures a home when all they've know is abuse and mistreatment. For those who dont understand, why dont you do some research first before spouting off. Even better, save it for the canned hunting farms and the zoos that make the sanctuary necessary. I've been visiting the park on and off for the last 4 years and maybe you should visit before making stupid comments.
u sedate these lions so they stay calm when tourist visit's them. 'these lions live there natural lives' how can you say they live there natural lives in cages!! you take these cubs away from thier mothers at make them have a litter also known as 'factory farming' youse make me utterly sick!
they were captive huny...or caged in small cages to live life in captivety then release to canned hunters...look into it, & u will then see that this is a sanctuary in comparison to what they live in before...these people rescue caged, abused, deprived animals from a horror, u cant imagine...there arent enought George Adamsons left in the world !! i totally hear the cry of your heart...i am heart broken too ! Bless u !!
huny they have been rescued from a life of horror ! trust me when i tell you this ! they cant be rehabitited back into the wild, & there are not any George Adamsons in the world !
@xxfernneilsonxx Obviously you have gone of half cocked here - read - put you brain into gear before opening your mouth!! This is one of the few Santuaries actually doing work for the Lions protection. Read - don't just make assumptions.
this park is a lot of shite! how can you sick people do this to lions!! just read a website on you people! sittin there saying that this park provides veterinary care and good living conditions for these lions! beleive it when i see it! sick disgusting people

the Lion is listed as 'threatened'. which means that numskulls at canned hunting & pet zoo prisons will soon put them on the endangered lists.
all such 'idiot hunting farms' should be reported to conservationists,so they can be shut down by what means are necessary.
the worlds greatest predator is.... Man.
not the Lion, who can be very cool. per Adamson & others.

@jagib2 This is not a canned hunting ground - please read about Drakenstein. I agree with you about human beings.
