fucking Reed: he bitches about someone bitching about the quality of a raw demo, the interviewer says "Something is better than nothing," and Reed contradicts himself (his GREAT insight!) and says "Something is always better than nothing."
i love she asks him to quote the guy who he's supposidely an expert on, on a topic he wrote a book about, yet not only can he not quote one of the poems, but he mis-quotes one of the most popular american poems. what a lightweight.
You need to watch his older interviews. He has always been annoyed by or contemptuous of interviewers so he bullshits or lies or says whatever comes into his head until it's over.
Look at his earlier interviews. He just says random things and nonsense, lies for no reason, then contradicts his lies...
He's never liked interviews.
With age he's mellowed, and lost the defensive hostility, but he's still pretty well defended. Still seems not to like interviews. I think he's extremely bored.
not that it really matters, but i think it's pretty clear she caught him off guard with a question that any legitimate academic, who has produced a book on the topic of poetry, should have answered fairly easily. i could quote poe to a better degree than he did, and i wouldn't consider myself qualified to write a book about him. it's so easy to say he misquoted poe on purpose.
Who told you Lou Reed is a "legitimate academic"? LOL! He's a rock musician. A great many of his songs reference drugs, and sex, and he seems to have been very open minded about experimenting with all the possible variations of each. He's a very literate man, but he's had trouble remembering his own lyrics on stage.
@TheBadBandana None of your comments state anything relevent. Several similar musicians have PhDs (Greg Gaffin of Bad Religion comes to mind). As I recall Reed has a BA in Literature from Syracuse. Furthermore he has the whole Andy Warhol influence, very artsy and academic, not so much the rocky actually (see Reed's follow up to Sally Can't Dance).
He did his album the raven and the rock opera POEtry as tributes. He never said he was an expert he just wanted to make a tribute because he liked poes writing and poes personality
You guys are assholes. Lou is an artist with a unique interpretation of Edgar Allen Poe's poetry. He doesn't have to be technically correct from a literary scholar's point of view, otherwise his creative force would be useless.

Gotta love Lou, but ...
Am I the only one who finds it funny he can't even recite a single stanza of "The Raven"? And Poe wrote a lot of shorter poems ... "El Dorado" ... "Annabel Lee" ... "Alone" .... "To Helen" ... come to think of it, did Poe even write any long poems -- a la Tennyson?
Maybe I'm just being too critical, but if the guy decided to rewrite Poe, maybe he should have been more familiar with the source.
Wow, I worshipped this guy, but he is kind of an intellectual lightweight, when she pushes him to elaborate on his aesthetic, he sounds like he really doesnt know what he is talking about
lay off the hostess. there are many worse things to be than fat and thick-voiced. should she lose some weight? sure. but she seems like a nice enough person.
I find that somewhat insulting being an american myself and never knowing that I was obsessed with fat and beauty. wow you know more about me than I know of myself....why is it *okay* to insult americans but if I insulted your nationality oooo what an awful american I would be...(?)
Aw, I watched this interview at least 40+ times. Thank you for this interview and all the other ones, which I enjoyed very much. It's funny that they mark your videos as infringement, yet the more mainstream bullshit media is being exploited today and not getting marked.
Did you see the looks Lou gave that lady? xD He showed her what's what very discreetly.

Of course you're right, an academic would be very good at memorization, but understanding a work and memorizing a work are entirely different acts.
