@Kamradec Apparently, the reactors on these ships are pretty seriously deteriorated, due to age (Kirov/ Admiral Ushakov is 31 years old) and years of deferred maintenance. Currently, only the youngest ship, Peter the Great is sailing, Admiral Nakhimov, the second youngest is set to finish a 13 year refit next year, and the others are "planned" to be refitted, although the age, expense, massive crew compliment and poor condition may have something to say about that
Im making a model of this ship because they have one in the game "Ace Combat 6", in the game she is known as the "Marigold". However my point is these are actually some very good detail shots, good work!
great ship no doubt. One major problem for the Kirov class is its massive radar signature. In a war it would be fighting aircraft firing missiles from hundreds of miles away. In modern navel engagement USA has 12 active super carriers with 4 more being built right now. Russia has only one active carrier the Admiral Koznetsov. The kirov class has excellent electronic counter measures...but no C.M. in the world can stop everything. USA has stealth cruise missiles...wow
@azpowerhitter Stealth cruise at about 600MHP and in tests can get to within 12-8 miles of target before they are detected. about a 2min lead time roughly to react to incoming threat if factored from ten miles out Multiple missiles coming from multiple bearings. No ship in the world has a 100 percent success rate against such threats.
@azpowerhitter: that's right, but I think Russian have always centre is main strategy in continental control trough ground forces, they have ground access to a large part of the world
Its too bad they didnt build the 5th and final of the class, and its too bad they never finished Project 1143.7 was cancelled at 40% completion, and its too bad Varyag was never finished.. ugh fucking russian corrupt government, thank you Putin and Medvedev for rebuilding your navy
@77shadowknight immense aren't they? In every sense. One criticism of them at the time I believe was that they were as high value a target as the class of ship they were intended to counter (US carriers). Not a bad criticism to have levelled at one....
I was just Reading over a few comments, this class of ships have some superior fire power but and a very big but, they need drastic modernisation. I read that two are up for modernisation but at the mo if it came to it I don't think they'll be battle ready for some of the new and futuristic ships that the USA and Uk have, but scary looking things they are lol
There is modernization programme confirmed for all 4 Kirovs. One was even stopped from being scrapped. What is known that they will be upgraded for stealth design and that will get compleately new armament. Not clear what. It is also said that their battlerole will change. Hope russians will go forward with modernization as Kirovs are beautifull.
I totally agree man. This class is absolutely deadly and im astonished that something with so much weaponry actuallyc ame out of a shipyard, and in my opinion, when they came out, a lone kirov, Yuri Andropov to be exact could have easily resisted an attack against it by a British Carrier Group, or an American SAG, perhaps even a US Carrier Battle Group
Basically, this thing is a nuclear powered floating castle of SAM's, CIWS's and Granits!
those plans were made back in 2006 before russia cut its entire military budget by a massive 15% so the new plan was the 1 in service to be used the one on update to be put in a mothball fleet and the 2 on overhaul are set to be scraped
@steamingpoopfart As as i see they just made their budget freeze 1,2 trilion rubles....for 2009 and 2010. And they are planing to increase military budget for 60% until 2013, thats what i see. Where did you get that information? I saw this about Kirov class cruisers 10 days ago on TV.... O.o Maybe you work in Russian defence ministry?
trovo assurdo che sia stata intitolata ad una flotta di navi da guerra, all'esponente del PCUS che si schierò contro la proposta di investire ingenti risorse nell'industria bellica.
I would have to say that these are the third most powerful class of fighting ships, next to Battlewagons(Battleships for you retards out there) and supercarriers, i.e. the Nimitz class of carriers, because of their fighting capability
Dunno. They're designed for a very asymmetrical kind of confrontation against the US carrier fleets - where a single Kirov-class stands off and attacks via missiles, while the US carriers would defend themselves with airplanes. So, it's really hard to put up a ranking. It's like comparing an MBT to a SP-howitzer.
@ludgidia123 Communism is a great ideology but to be more sufficient it needs some reforms to be more free than it was before in the cccp for example .
Do you know what P-700 rocket is? After the launch group of rockets go to the tagert in radio contact. Any ship with p-700 rockets will be destroyed by nimitz class airgroup hundreds of miles from it. Its 2009 and Russia cannot still build true carrier. The U.S. been building them since the 1920,s
Don't wanna argue about P-700. About carriers. Several years ago we built one... for China. Another one soon will be finished... and gone to India. Projects of own carriers were started and closed many times. It's expensive and we don't really need one because we are not the ones who bomb countries thousends miles away (enough own oil). And if some "young democraties" begin to think that washington support is enough to start a little victorious war here, we don' need a carrier to kick ass.

No ship can withstand a nuclear explosion at less than 1 km. Still some ships, including the Kirov-class, have extremely good antimissile defences which COULD enhance a bit their chances of preventing an incoming attack.
I have always loved the Kirov class , beautiful ships with a graceful hull shape , if only the RN had something like them :D, They truly are the last battleships. However , I wonder how they would perform in war. I mean their designated role would be to hunt down carrier groups and destroy them with missiles , However , I reckon they have to be regaurded as symbols of national prestige , I mean It would be quite easy for one of them to be taken out by a guided missile destroyer
Well , who cares , I mean in this day and age (fingers crossed touch wood) , two nations with powerful carrier battle groups are not going to go to war with each other - and I mean the Kirovs are the ultimate power projection vessels , and they are just so pretty - I mean they are really a design master piece
Oh I know that , I am an officer in the RN :D ,so I think I can identify a battleship from a guided missile cruiser , but I was comenting on their size mainly
LMFAO... mmmkay, lets see... 20x P-700 anti-ship missiles 14x SS-N14 cruise missiles 96x S-300PMU,400 long range anti-air missiles 192x short range Tor anti-air missiles 1x twin barrel Ak-630 8x Ak-630 6 barrel 30mm gatling guns 6x Kashtan-M missile/gun systems 10x 533mm torpedos 4x RBU anti-submarine/surface rocket launchers ...no power?
