I saw it on late night TV at about 10 or so. I didn't scare me but I think it provided me the first erotic experience of my life. As a gay guy I still find myself HUGELY turned on by the story of a handsome helpless young man at the hand of an older evil doctor experiencing the horror of his ever changing body. His painful whimpering as he is finally realizing his destiny when it is clearly too late to do anything but brace for the final transformation drives me nuts. Wierd, I know. :-)

I was disappointed Dirk Benedict just turned into a regular size old king cobra instead of some super mutant freaky king cobra. What's the point? King cobras already exist. Strother Martin goes bonkers and dies from a cobra bite while making a speech to his other king cobra, the mongoose gets David, and the movie ends on a closeup of Heather Menzies screaming his name because she knows he turned into a snake. It was all for nothing.

While I suppose that's one way you could interperet it, I don't recall that actually being the case. It's entirely possible that the narrator was trying to be dramatic (And ending up sounding silly) and not trying to imply that the Cobra vs Mongoose and man vs man statements were connected in any way.

I saw this alone when I was about 8, but it didn't really scare me, just gave me a very weird but also very sexual feeling that lasted for days, never forgot that, and yes I'm strait!

Now that I'm a little wiser I find it very interesting that the snake was a universal symbol in just about every ancient culture for sex and sexuality. I think there's a lot of archetypic symbolism in a human transforming into a snake that may go as deep as our DNA, though probably not the intention of the film?

Dirk Benedict was absolutely gorgeous in this, before the latex and makeup. I remember seeing this as a kid and being terrified. I remember the ending too, I think the mongoose got out of its cage and killed David. I could be wrong tho.

I think the scientist was trying to find a way for humans to survive a nuclear holocaust...and we were supposed to believe that snakes are *ahem* impervious to such things.
