  • Thanks for sharing such a nice video about fruibats.

  • SORRY I DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT THEM BUT DO THEY COME FROM EGGS?

I AM NOT A SMART-ASS WHERE I LIVE I TAKES 2MIN JUST TO POST THIS LOW INTERNET CONECTION NOT A GOOD ONE 8MIN JUST TO LOAD A 1:58MIN VIDEO THANKS LATER

  • and the birth of Batman begins

  • damn those things are awesome!

  • Those fellas love our mangoes :)

  • i wanna bite his nose :3

  • the ol' Tongue-In-The-Mouth. Dear, O'Dear, Sunshine, I don't think I know you well enough yet.

  • What a priviledge..to be French kissed by a curious fruit bat! Sounds like some teens I know..

  • 1:17 my what sharp claws you have

  • so if i hung upside down i can grow wings and have muscless legs.

  • @31rS3RP3N7 If you hang upside down, you're blood will flow to your head :p

  • @Silent0Seven

    exactly my point.

  • she loves her fruit

  • @halfgoodhalfevil but that depends on their age, fruit bats bite like cats,so you will feel a bite of a cat,its not that painful but can be a bit sometimes, and i agree you 100%

  • how the heck did a cute bat episode turn into a war of religions?

  • i wonder, do bats bite? i don't know much about bats, but i think they're cool.

  • oh yes, they bite.

  • actually the theory that rodents started jumping out of trees to get flies is why they grew wings is already discreditted. its supposed to be a theory for why animals started flying. but how did the flies start flying? etc

  • Many organisms may have developed flight independently of each other. The bats probably didn't grow wings so they could catch flies, but rather started catching flies after they became able to fly. However, the evolution of bats is one of those things we don't know much about right now. They don't fossilize very well.

  • well birds and bats are of diffrent families. but last i checked the evolutionary theory for why was a need to catch flying insects etc. but that doesnt explain how and why insects started flying. i mean its just one of many holes that the evo crowd of over confident supporters want to downplay or ignore. i just dont like how they want to act like there is nothing wrong with evolutionary theories all over the place. they want to say its "proven" enough to be unquestionable. but its not

  • I just explained to you that modes of flight must have developed independantly of each other. The explanation for one doesn't NEED to explain others because it isn't meant to.

I don't think anybody thinks that evolutionary theory is perfect, much less scientists. Everybody knows that we'll change our ideas about a lot of things in the future with increased knowledge.

  • and i explained that that is pretty obvious...

i know plenty of people who are willing to say evolution is so well proven that any disagreements with it is insane. that if you dont agree with it then you are stupid. your telling me you dont know of anybody like this? lol.

the fact is there are way too many big holes in it to call it the truth. it isnt totally off, but it isnt the answer we've been looking for. its supporters are often religiously fanatical about it

  • Nobody believes that the theory of evolution is 100% correct. Partly or mostly, but not entirely. However, the fact of evolution has been established as firmly as the fact that germs cause diseases. There's more reason to doubt the moon landing than to doubt evolution happens. And that is to say, very little.

  • nobody is a strong word lol. i dont think we should use words like that unless they truly fit.

no way can you make some sort of comparison chart of amount of proof for theories lol! i dont think so.

there is more reason to doubt that SOME natural process produces change. the accuracy of evo theory to describe it is the question. and there are more holes in it then the moon. there are no where near the amount of valid refutes in germ theory as there are in evo theory. not even close.

  • Fine, hardly anybody then.

Are you sure that you've got a handle on the scientific concensus about what constitutes reasonable doubt?

  • not in my experience. check out youtube you will see straight fantatics who are just as i described them. even evo theory "leaders" like dick dawkins is in the same vein. it is emotional exxageration to fit their religious persuasion and a paranoia (not completly unfounded but certainly misguided) of being persecuted by the "religious right" lol. its just more madness. them and the 6000 year people belong together arguing over who is more wrong...

  • Your implication that Richard Dawkins is dogmatically following the theory as it exists now refusing to admit that it could be wrong about some things is totally untrue, and you'd know that if you had read any of his books. While Dawkins was growing up and getting his education, he saw the world of biology changing daily with the new information that was coming in from DNA research and other areas. He knows how quickly our knowledge can change. He advocates skepticism for this reason.

  • he advocates condescending to anyone who does not accept evolutionary theory as THE answer. ive seen his speeches. he is full of so much hate and disdain that it is amazing that people considr him a good advoacte for their leader. i could never take on a leader you looks and acts so biased. and the fact is i have seen him build strawmen against the religions he hates. just another biased person with a few quotes and books to sell. its an agenda, religious just like the other; humanist

  • Hate? No. Frustration and anger yes, but that's understandable considering how scientific progress has been constantly stymied by religious dogma. But where has he ever expressed hate? Yes, he does get a bit condescending and I wish he'd be more like Carl Sagan in that regard, reaching out instead of slapping, but if he hated people who disagreed with him, he wouldn't be so interested in educating. Not every scientist can write books for the public that will help them understand what's going on.

  • constantly symied by religious dogma? when since galiileo has this happened? lol

where has he expressed hate? plenty of speeches. condescension as well

dakwins plays on peoples emotions and adds in minor points and strawmen, who cares about him, not me.

i think there are much better people on the atheist side, such as bernard carr (if you are able to claim him) no longer have einstein.

anyway, whwere is this link to the game site for the news report? you can pm me the link

  • You can find it by googleing "giantology" and it's the second hit. It's actually a wiki because the original site isn't up anymore but it details the viral marketing campain with links to the material. They're also responsible for the "Siberian Ice Giant" and the giant in the mountains of Iran.

  • sigh, first of all its not even wikipedia. its a wiki for blogs or something. it is a treasure hunt but it got cut short anyway as none of the links work or even claim to be able to show proof.

m not stuck on this being real or something, im not claiming it is. as far as i can see, and as far as you can show, its a regular newscast. with video of a giant thing. thats the end of that

  • I said it was "a wiki", not wikipedia, not that wikipedia is a scholarly source or anything. You can also find a ton of video game/ Sony articles about it if you are interested.

  • >constantly symied by religious dogma?

It's usually not as dramatic as Galileo. Usually it's just spreading misinformation and lies to make people afraid of science without reason. Abortion, contraception, vaccines and stem cell research are all important areas of study which we need to understand, yet the incredible ignorance and anti-intellectualism of hard-right conservatives has got a lot of people terrified of even discussing the issue and lashing out instead.

  • i disagree.

anyway, back to the giant. you cant prove what you see so why do you want me to believe you? i dug up some things on it. and ill show you all i found that was supposed to PROVE it is a hoax. nothing.

  • Are you serious? Are you this desperate to believe that when some video game designer posts pictures of supposed monsters he's discovered all on his own and nobody else has seen, you'll just take it at face value, but when I suggest it might just be a fake made to sell a video game which prominantly features giants? Well that's just too incredible to believe!

  • you are acting wild. i showed you the best of the "proof" for this being a hoax i could find. and it amounted to nothing. i gave it to you in a pm. if you have anything better, feel free to send it my way. until then...i see and can find NOTHING of value. so my official postion is not to claim it is real or fake, but it looks real...until someone can show me otherwise, i see no reason to change my position. notice i didnt say i think it is real. i think it possibly is real.

  • im sorry...make people afraid of science? lol. wow....hmmm. sounds a little paranoid and over generalized hazy persecution fantasy-ey to me.

hard right conservatives...the reloigious right , right? for fucks sake. you dont really know about these things do you? be honest, arent you just hopped up on the rhetoric juice? we all taste it at times, dont be embarrassed.

i mean first of all...the religious right is alot deeper story then you might imagine. they are in disguises...this is tactic

  • I come from a family of fundamentalist Christians and used to be one. Everything they say about them is true.

  • them as in the couple of people in your family and maybe your church...if you want to over generalize them in that fashoin so be it, but i dont see what this has to do with me.

the religious right, lets say jesus camp people, are pawns in a wicked game of manipulation through religion. i study religions and their histories. you would be surprised as to what is really going on beyond the typical leftist liberal or humanist rhetoric. its way worse and deeper then they can imagine. also different

  • Yeah, I can agree with that mostly. Maybe I do generalize but I know enough people like that and have heard enough pontificating on the Right that I have a pretty good idea what they think and it's often so contrary to the actual facts that it's almost like deliberate fabrication although I don't like to accuse people of lying. Sometimes they lie to themselves.

  • well that sucks for them.

the real story about almost all religions and certainly the american protestism and also the catholocism they tried to escape from...is the mystery schools. it all boils down to that (in case you want to see what i was hinting at) if you do not want to expend the energy needed to see the real story of why there is so much fighting over religion etc, then plz recognize their is a deeper level going on and it isnt as simple as christianity.

  • i mean what is the idea of how insects developed flight?

  • I don't know, why don't you ask a biologist?

  • fruit bats to me look like dogs

  • That's why they're called Flying Foxes :)

  • And "flying dogs" in Hungarian:)

  • Haha thats cute, that bat loves you :)

  • LOL! the bat kissed him!

  • And apparantly the fruit bat is french...at 1:30 she slipped Bruce the tongue! :p

  • i want oneeeeeeeeeeeee.... why don't they breed them for pets.... uffiiiiiiiii

  • Bruce? The guy's name is Bruce? What's his last name..."Wayne"?

    Sorry, I couldn't resist that! :p

  • God's a nigger, what does he know?

  • I'm not your fried, but this god fellow sure sounds like a nigger.

  • You're not a proof-reader either. Well if you want to call him a nigger then that's your prerogative, but if I were you, I would just watch what I say about Him.

  • o my god...this is that it is a bat!!! is huge!!

  • I would LOVE to own one of those bats. They are simply adorable and mind boggling. : )

  • What a funny and interesting video. :-)

  • I hope that fruit bat is vaccinated with anti rabies

  • yes fruit bats are good to keep as a pet i hav one as my pet i saved its life its name is kichi and it is a baby it tickles when they cling on to you.

  • does it hurt when that bat clings on to your fingers? that's what I'm worried about!

  • no they dont hurt i tryed

  • Aw, that's adorable. I'm currently studying to be a chiroptologist (bat scientist)/wildlife rehabilitator =]

Bats are such incredibly beautiful and smart animals, yet they are one of the most feared, hated creatures on earth. I hope to educate people so they will have a new appreciation for bats, which by the way are more closely related to primates than anything else [=

  • @peepchick101 Wow, I wish there were more people like you. I keep explaining to people how great these little creatures are but their heads are full of clichés... If you don't mind my asking, what kind of studies does it take to become a chiroptologist? (Google won't tell me where and how it happens...)

  • @drunkfirefly

Majoring in biology or zoology is the best way to get into it. Minoring in wildlife rehabilitation or environmental sciences is also good. Volunteering at wildlife centers or vet offices, particularly for exotic animals, gives ya a nice headstart as well :) Working with bats is amazing

  • I love fruit bats

  • SUCH A CUTIE, THE BAT I MEAN.

  • do fruit bats make good pets? can they be potty trained, and if not can they be in a cage of reasonable size to stay in most of the time like a parrot?

  • Bats are illegal to have in most places. You need a wildlife rehabilitation license or a zoological license to have them in captivity. While less than 1% of bats carry rabies, it's not safe to go and handle them in the wild - because, well, they're wild animals. They will bite or urinate all over you if they are afraid or angered. Bats need LOTS of space to fly around (not just a bird cage), as well as special food and housing. While bats cute, they aren't pet material =]

  • I understand their needs, but the type of pet I mean is like a peregrine falcon, cept its a mammal and may not actually hunt. But of all the many many many kinds of bats, if they get all their medical stuff like any other pet would, I dont see why they can't be like a parrot. The house basically acts like a cave, so they could fly outside and come back, I just don't see how to potty train them, hence the peregrine falcon analogy.

  • Bats live around 30 years, and because they are a controlled species and illegal to have as pets you are never able to take them into a vet.

Any vet treating a 'pet' wild animal without contacting the authorities can lose their license and will have to report you or destroy the animal when you take them in - regardless of health. They are destroyed in the end.

Keeping wild animals is cruel, the factors against it are too numerous to mention even. Please, stick to domesticated creatures.

  • lol the bat went to his groin area to imitate a dick

  • thats a huge as bat

  • omg man i want a bat...\

    not just any bat

    a fruit bat..

    cuzz they look hecka cute..

    i am jelaous

  • he got batty lovings...i am jealous XD hehe

  • haha. He sure did.

  • Aww, thats so cute. Do the bats claws hurt at all when theyre hanging on your fingers?

  • thye are sharp enough to tear, tis why experts tend to say dont handle them...

but they usually wont harm a person if they don't feel threatened or such things...

oddly western browns are the most notorious for not liking humans too much hehehe

  • I absolutely adore bats and I especially like fruit bats. I have a big tattoo of the spectacled flying fox on my arm. Just to show the bat love !

  • What a cute flying puppy! DrBruce, I might be staying in Australia for a while after my graduation ceremony in Perth. I would like to visit Queensland to see the bats. Just wondering would it be ok to keep a pet bat in Australia?

  • Thanks so much for sharing this... She's absolutely amazing!

  • The background area looks very familiar- can you tell me the name of this facility? I spoke with two different bat rehabbers in Australia for a project, and I can't remember which one this reminds me of. I bet it's them though. Great footage.

  • Hi Brujahziggy. The facility is called The Bat House in the Daintree Rainforest near Cape Tribulation in northern Queensland, Australia. A great place to get close to these little guys. Hope this helps.

  • Yep, that's the place (I was on my husband's account). I used photos of Pushkin to make a lifesize moving bat puppet- Can't post links but if you search for "thecopperdragon" "evet" & "october", you'll find the page. He's at the bottom, with a link for better photos. What do you think, did I come close? He would have been impossible to make without the people at the Bat House. I am looking forward to when I can go there in person and see everybody!

  • awesome!! Thanks for sharing this!

  • It's soooooo cute!! I loved it when it crawled down and hung onto his shirt~ So wonderful~!

  • Great video. Thanks Dr Bruce

  • Thanks for sharing this film, I enjoyed learning more about bats
