  • But in your skin care basics video, you say you did attend cosmetology school?

  • Hehe!!! Skin nails and hair!! If they did go they

    must not like it!

  • I want his industrial PIERCING!

  • There are cosmetology schools that offer makeup artist training programs that can give you an edge on the competition out there because you have official makeup artist training. A lot of them teach wedding makeup, special effects makeup, etc. And there are of course some makeup artist specific schools, too.

  • thank you so much!

  • You forgot to mention learning from your tutorials ;-)

  • Ur absolutely right. I'm going to be a special effects makeup artist with a minor in cosmetology and my major will be in film directing and psychology. Bit I have gone to like a bunch o classes for makeup

  • Your sooooo awesome... I love you.. Your sooooo talented.. Amazing..

  • Well your absolutely right.....of corse I wish I had seen this video last year so drudging through months of hair (and a few grand$Later)just to find out ... HA!.... I didn't need to do all that. :(... but it did however open up some doors for me I would have never taken upon myself to open.......I love your videos! ... you are brilliant and you ROCK :)

  • youre cute!!! i love your voiceee :)

  • Offf subject, fruit loops in the back :)

  • @TheAyeshia, it's a vertical industrial piercing.

  • what is the name of that piercing on your left ear the one with the long bar?

  • Mayble!! Haha, I love you!!!!!

  • However you have to check your states laws because in my state you can not legally touch someone's skin or hair without being licensed, especially if you plan to get be paid for it!! :(

  • @ZenaKP hahaha what the fuck...

  • well said...you saved me three grand. c:

  • My cosmetology guru!!!!

  • well i guess u were born with it

  • hey i was wondering if wen i graduate if you could help me out. i really wont to get into doing makeup specail effect for horror movies.

  • what is the name of that piercing that is next to your scaffolding piercing ?

  • O.O Self Taught?!

  • what?? my high school has a cosmetology class and i joined....HOPING to learn more about makeup :( well, at least its free......and i could use a tip or two about hair....

  • Hell, my high school offers makeup classes(:

  • I go to a school that teaches it all. I take a full time full makeup course, from fundamentals, to airbrushing to special effect and 4 weeks of hair. Its actually because of you and Xsparkage that I am in school for makeup. I watched all yours and Leeshas videos before I started and you guys inspired me. I actually met Leesha at the Vancouver IMATs and it was so awesome to meet her and I told her she inspired me to go to school. I got Blanche Macdonald in vancouver =D

  • I learned how to do drag make up because of your vids, so i thank you!!!

  • Beauty schools will offer make up. Especially if you go for Esthetician course. But beyond that he's right you would learn more doing advanced education. As far as doing hair and styling hair, in some states, you HAVE to have a license esthetician or cosmetologist license to charge for make up application. So be sure to look up the regulations in your state ;) I myself am a make up artist and hair stylist.

  • well the paul mitchell school we had makeup class once a week sometimes twice a week. we got a big makeup kit and everything.its the dinky schools that dont teach it....cosmetology school is hair skin nails and makeup

  • O.O You don't have to go to school?! Oh my goodness!! YAY!!!

  • ill be going to beauty school in about a year, and you spend 15 hrs doing facials and make up :p

  • Yea your right I just got my cosmetologist license and you do get about a week or two on makeup and it's only the basic how to apply foundation blush etc .

  • like this if Jessie Blush sent you here<3c:

  • How hard is it to be a cruelty free makeup artist?

  • So can I shadow you? ;D

  • THANK YOU!!! NOW, i really need to make the people understand that paying me for my skills not for going to school or what not.

  • i swear ta gawd if u were straight yhuu wud have girls fallin all over yhuu :O ur teeth are especially ammaaaaziiing :))

  • He's so cool. :) I kinda got boredd at the research part so I dozed a little and noticed... He has FRUIT LOOPS! O.o I'm happy over a cereal. You can tell I have a life. Lmao

  • I'm in cosmetology school and I went because I do want to do hair. But its so true they barely teach makeup, nails, and skin...its totally all about hair.

  • self taught OMGGGGG

  • Thumbs up!! for self taught!! make up artists!!!

  • I heard that around here you need a license and insurance. Where do I go about getting this stuff done?

  • hi petrilude - for aussie artisans watching or international students wanting to study here i just thought i would mention the following -

in Australia as a makeup artist you must have certain hair requirements to work/assist. this varies from Sydney to Melbourne however. In Sydney you don't have to be qualified in hair but in Melbourne, you do.

I study f/t 'specialist makeup service diploma' (my second one, love it so much! this is 12 mths versus 6)

hair and wiggery is a must here! : (

  • Here in Brazil we have university courses on makeup, it's a technological graduation, 2 years long. We study from bridal makeup to special effects, it's a new course, but I think it's worth it if you want to be a makeup artist.

  • Gladd u clarified this cuz many do gett it confused cuz I'm in cos school andd was hopin to learn makeup but NOPE I'm not :( but justt watchin u I'm learnin a lot andd basic stuff for when ii start drag andd justt wanna say THANXX UR GREAT LOVE watt ya do andd LOVE ya <3 :) keep doin watt ya do best :D

  • soo helpful! thankyou i only want to do

makeup... nothing with hair... No thnks

  • So true!!! I am a licensed cosmetologist and we spent just one week on makeup! I was a little upset even though i did go for hair, I still would have like it to me more rounded in the distribution of other education. You are awesome from what i see so far. You really have skills.

  • there are colleges that do offer cosmetics as a program

I know my college does also quite a few girls I know do the cosmetics program and then the esthetics program

  • sooooooooooooooooooo let me shadow u? lol no but forreal..

  • Very good distinction. If you want to only do makeup cosmo school is not the way to go.If you plan to do film or theatre in CA or NY you will have to get an ethseticians license at least to qualify for union status,(which you have to have to work) though you still may not learn much...Most is learned through on job training or workshops.Id be very careful with Utube vids. Some are great, most are crap by people with little to no actual experience or training.

  • if anyone is interested in MAKE UP schools, i recommend cosmix school of make up artistry in ft lauderdale fl! i just started there and it is PHENOMENAL! and petrilude has inspired a lot of my work for school projects :)

  • What about schools that are MOSTLY about MAKE UP? and a little bit of the rest? i'd love to go to that school. instead of the other way around.

  • Sexy septum piercing !

  • Yummy! I want fruit loops now!

  • im self taught as well.... i have videos on my channel as well.

and i believe that my makeup that i do is actually talented..

however i want to kno if going to a makeup school would that look better on yourself? or not? does it even make a difference?

because i want to do makeup for like celebrities and models.

  • I love you.

  • Im considering becoming a makeup artist since I am in love with anything beauty related, does anyone know how the pay is? i hear you dont get medical or retirement benefits which is one reason Im not sure about going with it...

  • I really wanted to go to easthetic school, but ended up taking business with a major in accounting. Because i felt like yeah i love makeup, looking at it playing with it, and learning tips and tricks, but i feel like the most talented people that are meant for make up are self taught i feel like they just fall into it. im sure you could "learn" through school but for some reason i feel like math is like here is the formula use it do it learn it love it...there is an exact way to do it

  • @CourtneyEuphoric but with makeup it like be as creative as you can and thats what seperates you from the best. where as math its like be exact and thats what makes you best not better maybe im wrong

  • @CourtneyEuphoric but anyway i decided i will learn makeup for fun(self tought, youtube, books, tv tips, friends whatevs) and maybe do a free lance business on the side after i graduate business school. it will work out good for me cuz if i fail at makeup i have a backup plan and if i succeed ill have a business backround

  • thank you for posting this video. so many people think a cosmetologist is like using the fancy word over make up artist.

  • Wonderful, you are the first person who has made it clear that Cosmetology school has nothing to do with makeup and more about hair, you are very informative. Agencies representing makeup artist are interested in only two things, seeing your portfolio or who have you shadowed/assisted.

  • @petrilude I second @Ludekat. I have been trying to learn how to keep everything clean as a makeup artist. Also, I have known a few people that keep eyeshadows from Limited Mac collections from YEARS ago and use them for current looks. Aren't you supposed to toss shadows after a year or so?

  • I was wondering, people are always saying not to share your make-up for hygiene and such. So, when you are a make-up artist and use your make-up on several people, what are the steps you follow to keep everything hygienic?

  • i have to say i adore your make up tutorials and i know tons of people who have gone to aveda and havent learned any thing they destroyed my hair =( but with that being said i have wanted to do editorial make up for a really long time im so glad to hear its not something you need to go to school for (college wasnt my cup of tea) thanks for letting me know <3

  • Josh!! This was so helpful. I didn't know this bit of info at all. Thanks for the advice. :) now I can focus on investing my money into makeup supplies & books that will help me along the way. Thanks a bunch. Much love.

  • I LOVE YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO JOSH! THANK YOU! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

  • I DON'T NEED YOUR ADVICE I CAN GET IT MY SELF THANK YOU LOL . . . LAME VIDEO

  • @sonya841

yeah, i agree with jaredknockout91. petrilude is awsome and knows how to do make up. you (among many others) really have to grow up and stop using religion and god as an excuse to diss people!....and why the hell are writing with caps lock on?!

  • ARE YOU STRAIGHT? BECAUSE NO REAL MAN WOULD WEAR COSMETICS OR FEMALE OR FEMININE CLOTHING . . . NOT NORMAL . . . SOME PEOPLE ARE SICK IN THIS WORLD MAY GOD GUIDE US ALL . . . LOST PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD

  • @sonya841 you talk about God, but you are in know way showing what he truly is!

we have enough fake people on youtube bashing people using the God edge

go away, get hit by a bus, do something please. jut stop spreading hate and start

    Appreciating other peoples hard work!

  • @sonya841 since you REALLY LIKE YOURS CAPS LOCK BUTTON, LOL.

  • hey Petrilude, do u have to have a liscence of some sort to be a makeup artist? thats why i wanted to go to cosmetology school? can ya'll like this so that way petrilude can see this?? or if somebody else knows, can ya'll comment?

  • @lexxibear709 He says in the video he's self taught meaning no formal training. He played in makeup one day, liked it, and got serious about it. I went to cosmetology school and they do not teach you about makeup, they teach you color theory which you can learn from youtube. I recommend that you go out and get some makeup books, watch 'good' makeup artists on youtube and try to go to any classes that may be in your area, oh and practice on anyone you can (including yourself). Good luck!

  • @creativebeautifulMUA omg thanksss! thats so helpful

  • @creativebeautifulMUA i really love your feedback and I'll keep what you said forever in my mind and heart

  • @lexxibear709 You do not need a liscense to be a MUA, but you do to be a hair stylist or aesthetician. I went to beauty school for basic makeup artistry and it is a huge waste of money, in my opinion. I have never been asked for a certificate, only photos. So if you are trying to get into makeup artistry, spend your money on creating a good portfolio with professional looking photos and building up your kit.

  • @koldbludded OMG THANKS SO MUCH!!! That is soooo helpful lol!!

  • I have to disagree! I attend Paul Mitchell The School Lexington and I have makeup classes every Thursday. I am also apart of a design team where we participate in fashion shows doing very avant garde makeup! Join a Paul Mitchell School today! :P

  • @babyCRUNKK arent Paul Mitchell schools only for hair? :/

  • @BabyK18316 Nope! Every Thursday we have makeup class...we do special effects makeup and we are getting ready to do a charity drag show! :))

  • Off topic, I love your sweater.

  • Some cosmetology schools have specialized curriculum for makeup and special FX makeup, though, like I know Douglas J has that.

  • "I taught myself"

    ...oh my...... god........

you are seriously one of the best make up artists EVER, so i guess i always thought that you did some sort of schooling or something of that nature but DAMN to find out that it's all self taught is amazing... you're an inspiration!

  • @ch3rryp3psi You know he did go to cosmetology school right? Makeup is self taught that pretty much what he's saying.

  • 1 half day at my school

  • Its really cool that you share your knowledge with everyone, josh. Most people who are trying to make it in this business are very secretive.

  • i want to be a mua editorial -beauty-fashion runway etc... :) all of it lol

  • You have an excellent point hun. I know this friend of mine who has spent a fortune on make up school and after didnt even know how to contour hahaha

  • Josh, what part of new York do you live in now?!

  • i learn everything from you :)

  • Thank You!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I've been looking for someone i can be an understudy to, and seeing that youre from illinois as am i, i was wondering if it could be you. Youre an amazing artist!

  • @0401cynthia I thought he was from New York?

  • @0401cynthia he lives in nyc now

  • yeah i go to cosmetology n we did a like 2 classes of skin and make up :(

  • I spy froot loops.

  • Here in TN, your Cosmetology license covers the application of makeup, meaning that it allows you to apply it and get paid, but doesn't necessarily teach you a whole lot about it. But getting licensed is a great way to get your foot in the door. :)

  • @ribsdong every state you can apply makeup and get paid. All cosmos schools teach makeup to. But you dont need a license to do make up in any state.

  • I don't need no school, I just watch you and my list of gurus. Someone once told me a great way to practice or really get started was to find a job at a makeup counter.

  • Actually in Illinois, to apply make up (legally mind you) you have to be registered as a cosmetologist or esthetian. I personally think it is retarded. So you might want to advised people to check with their State's Dept of Professional regulation.

  • @calypsodancer That is 100% incorrect. I attend School in iowa. and we have a bunch of girls from Ill here. You dont have to have a license in any state to do make up.

  • @tattoogoddess85 @tattoogoddess85

Sorry, but that is 100% incorrect, I have checked all this out within the last month for Illinois. I talked to Elaine at Ill Dept of Prof reg less then 2 weeks ago about registering a make artist business and was told I have to be registered as an estetesian with 750 hours of schooling to apply makeup. Below is the link to the Illinios law.

idfpr.com/dpr/WHO/esth.asp then Esthetics Act and you can see that the actual law

  • @countesscalypso You are reading the act incorrectly. In esthetics you are taught makeup yes. But you do not have to be licensed in any state to apply makeup to people if you would like to chrage then you must have one. In the act it is just stating what the required curiclum is to get your estetics lic. Loop hole- if you work for a cosmetic company you can also apply makeup but only for demonstration purposes, and are not allow to tell the client what is esthetically pleasing

  • Although you can go to cosmetology school strictly just for nails or esthetics, you don't always have to do all 3 if that's not what you're into. I went for esthetics but it was a waste of time overall and yeah the things I learned in school about makeup I already knew and anyone could figure out on their own. Some states do actually require an esthetics license to work as a makeup artist in salons/spas etc :o

  • i went to cosmetology, and we spent ONE day on makeup! lol

  • Fruitloops!!!!

yum yum yum yum yum!!! :P*

  • fangasm-ed when you said sparkley

  • thank you for the clarification. this is definitely a popular misconception !

  • Someone once said you had to be licensed to be able to. I'm a bit confused

  • @Pslm91v14n15 You don't have to be licensed to put make up on someone in a department store setting (like a Lancome counter at a Macy's) and you don't have to be licensed to invite someone over or do house calls and do a person's make up for prom or a date. In a SALON setting is where you need a license. If you don't have a license in a salon, you can't touch anything, you're basically just another client. But if you don't wanna have anything to do with a salon, then don't worry about it!

  • 13 of the people who viewed this video owns a cosmetology school. lol

  • i wish i could've watched this video before i started cosmetology school.. i stopped going about 6 months ago, so now, i have to payyy backkk! i hate that school!

  • your so smart&inspiring !

  • Cosmetology only teaches day time and evening makeup and the different face shapes and how to highlight and contour them. I'd fersure wanna shade you cuz your makeup videos are awsome!

  • I am in school to be an esthetician. It's a third of the hours and costs much less than cosmetology. Josh, you are still my fav YouTube Guru; keep up the awesome work!

  • I got into horror make up from your "unzipped" tutorial, and got a job as a make-up artist at a local haunted house based on what I taught myself since then. Now I'm working on my portfolio to join a media-connections agency. People are paying me to do their make-up for zombie walk, and contacting me for local horror movies, as well as some tamer make-up for photo shoots.

  • this helped me so much! thank you for uploadinq this video and most of all thanks for beinq honest! i really appreciate it alot <3 :)

  • True art, in any form, cannot be taught.

  • I am just finishing training in Esthetics. I agree with everything this message points out except for that most esthetician programs do not go into depth on makeup application. I knew going in that the main focus would not be on makeup, however I was disappointed that we were not even shown one demo on makeup application. We mostly just practiced on ourselves, each other, and did a lot of applications of false lashes.

  • @drdawn86 Yes i ment Skeletal. Lol, Im from germany and my english isnt that good! :)

  • here in nova scotia you have to go to makeup school...:S

  • You can also learn through experimentation

    That's how I learned :)

  • i always find that funny how people don't know that its all about hair, i went to a convention and they told me that.

  • I bet alot of people that are in cosmetology are going "D'oh!" because they went to school trying to learn makeup when it's primarily hair LOL

  • You are right but you will always get better jobs if you are licensed...

  • What happened to that tutorial??

  • umm... third zombie-look please? ^^

  • Man you are my hero...

  • Narnia make up

  • when you do other people makeup and use fake lashes do they get to keep them or do they give them back

  • Pause at 0:00 or 0:01

Your hands looks like Skull hands *_*

  • @AkiraAzami that's really rude considering he is always getting ppl telling him he is too skinny! i think ur great just the way u r, josh!

  • Dear YouTube,

The Like/Dislike system, I can live with. I've gotten used to it now.

The new comment layout, fine with me.

But THIS, is just too much too take! The front page has completely lost it's organised, simple layout!

I don't know where you get your ideas, but I think I speak for a big part of the community when I say stop "fixing youtube"

I hate people who ask for thumbs up, but this is not meant to be funny. This is serious! Give this a thumbs up and copy/paste it around

  • Thank you !!!

  • you said you would make a vid on monday lets see it's.......... next saturday! from your time anyways.

  • freakin excited for the next video tutorial :)

  • Thank you soooo much. I needed that info

  • Dear Petrilude: You are a fucking beautiful genius!!!!

  • do you have a boyfriend that just poped in my head have you ever had a boyfriend or girlfriend

  • @jaspercrawford

    hes like 20 something.

im pretty sure he has tard.

  • Hey, Thanks so much for informing us of the difference b/t the schools and the actual professions. I wondered about that b/c there are some schools around here but the tuition is really high and I heard that they only spend about a week on actual makeup application.

  • I'm really glade that you clarify that pretty well because I'm in cosmetology and we only had one week on make up but i still love to do hair and all but i agree i learn a lot about make up through experience and from others=)

  • Jack Sparrow make up!please**

  • Hiya Sweetie! I just had to write and thank you for all your amazing tutorials! I began my Youtube beauty journey by watching all the standards.. Phan, Misschievous, etc... then I found YOU! • where is this video you promised us????? ^_^

  • You sir put the artist in Makeup Artist. Bravo.

  • whats ironic about this video is when it popped up for me to watch it, the advertisement was for a beauty school... maybe people should watch the video before advertising on the channel or whatever

  • a box of fruit loops and a bottle of wine! awe-some
