Like Billy, I am happy to see such great progress with his yard. This cr*p about 13 elephants having died prematurally is insane. I'm with Slash and Betty White when it is said we support our elephants.

Wonder if Slash will feel at all sad when Billy dies a premature death that most certainly will happen due to his being confined in such a small enclosure for so long. His feet are already messed up and he has been displaying neurotic behavior for a long time already. It is shameful that they won't release him to live the rest of his life in an elephant sanctuary that is ready to accept him.

Children can learn about elephants/ animals by reading books, watching educational films on TV, a library, or computer like millions of others, not by supporting the abuse they endure at the zoo. Elephants and other animals at the LA zoo die prematurely as a result of not being in their own natural habitat. Just because you want to relive your childhood at the zoo, does not mean animals should suffer for you, or your kids.

Billy won't be with other elephants at a sanctuary. He's a male, and the sanctuaries don't allow breeding, so he'd be isolated. The zoo plans to bring in a couple of females to be with billy when the new habitat is complete. Get the facts, like Slash, before you comment, dude.

Well, looks like Billy is not going to any sanctuary unfortunately, but breeding animals in captivity has been very unsuccessful. Birth rates are very low. There is a male elephant at TES and he is doing fine and has a LOT more room to roam. The point is that Billy has more than done his time and made the zoo tons of money. He deserves a rest instead of being a sideshow in a zoo for the rest of his life.

acually there is no such thing as a fully solitary elephant. although males do tend to leave their herds around the age of 13 they constantly look to interact with other elephants sometime forming what is knowen as "bachlor herds" also elephant can communicate through low-tones that can be heard by other elephants for miles. so it is very unlikley that a wild male elephant would go very long without some kind communication with other elephants.
