  • What a bunch of religious nuts commenting on this. I'm not particularly religious but can't you just accept that this is a beautiful hymn without starting a holy war?

  • There is NO "Reformed" Catholic Church. The Roman Catholic Church is One, Holy, Catholic (Universal) and Apostolic. Period. End of debate. You can call yourselves "reformed," but God did NOT command those who follow Him to go out and form your own "church." Nowhere does Christ give anyone at anytime the authority to go out and form your own church. I'm not creating new thoughts or trying to declare new material. I'm commenting on Holy Scripture. I pray for your unification with the Holy See.

  • There is another song to this popular tune. It's in our hymnal and I think it's called ''The works Of The Lord Are Created In Wisdom''

  • What exactly is a "Reformed" Catholic Church? Why don't you just see the light and go Protestant, like the rest of the *sane* Christian world?

  • you do know the Reformed Catholic Church is not recognized by Rome?

  • @dacatholicbandorgan My fat Prostestant ass isn't recognized by Rome either. Your priests are all perverts. Rome can have them.

  • "We Gather Together" is actually a Dutch Protestant hymn. There is an interesting opinion article about the origins of the hymn. The Protestant Dutch used it as a hymn overcoming domination and religious oppression by the Spanish Catholic king Philip of Spain.

"We Gather Together" was written by Dutchman Adrianus Valerius, known in his lifetime for strongly anti-Catholic and nationalistic poetry.

    Look it up.

  • Singing for choir trying to learn lyrics!

  • only religious unity can bring global harmony

  • Tried posting a link without success. Google: "Nederlandtsche Gedenckclanck im deutsch" Click on the first listing, which is: "Adriaen Valerius Nederlandtsche Gedenck-clanck" On this page, go to the bottom and click on: "Wilt heden nu treden - Melodie - Noten" This will give you text in Dutch. German, Latin and English. Here is verse one in Latin: Oramus, vocamus Iustissimum Deum, Qui munit et punit Severe reos Nec sinit peiores Domare meliores; Sit semper Deo laus, Qui respicit nos!
  • @petewrightrecords well it's worked wonders over the past 2000 years...

  • At the time the hymn was written, the Dutch were engaged in a war of national liberation against the Catholic King Philip II of Spain. "Wilt heden nu treden," "We gather together" resonated because under the Spanish King, Dutch Protestants were forbidden to gather for worship. The hymn first appeared in print in a 1626 collection of Dutch patriotic songs, "Nederlandtsch Gedencklanck."

  • Glad they are singing a good protestant hymn

  • Protestant, my hind foot! Have you tried listening to the WORDS? The tune may be "protestant", but that text is CATHOLIC. Hymn tunes are, or at least should be, non-sectarian. It can't be all "Holy God We Praise Thy Name" and "Mother Dear, O Pray for Me", now can it?
