I dont think this is a drug song, but rather a reaction to the sudden onslaught of media and "entertainment" culture, which is endemic nowadays, but was rearing it's ugly head already then. He's asking for escape and offering drugs as an allegorical substitute for avoidance of a society and a television set.
Some good some bad about Biafra, he can be excessively preachy but hes often right. I wonder what hell have to say on the Bill Burroughs documentary (a man within) about drugs.
I was always in something of a minority in liking Ted's drumming more than Peligro's much of the time. I love the drums on Fresh Fruit, but then again I don't know how Ted would have fared with Religious Vomit and the second Ep. I would have loved to hear it though. I've heard Peligro mess up a whole lot live and sometimes his tempo wanders aimlessly.
@bengativo6 - you should check my channel for the bands I have played for over the past 20 years before you make such a defensive statement, considering I played extensively for MDC, Ludichrist and a bunch of other bands your observation is, frankly, totally wrong.
dont you ever compare to the big bands.ok!!.black flag .dead kennedys minor threat.d.o.a. to a band that might ve existed more than 30 years ago.that was at no level like this bands.sounds like you played in garage bands back then nothing against it but never compare with the kings of hardcore
Great job at thumbing me down, nicely done. It's sad to me that you seem to know nothing about MDC, aka Millions of Dead Cops, as they were just about as important to American punk and hardcore as the Dead Kennedys, but I realize it's possible to have gaps in one's knowledge depending on your own experience. I know it's natural to argue with people on youtube and assume they have nothing to back up their claims, but I was trying to point out that in this case you are wrong, but oh well...
@digitalshark MDC were good and had some good stuff, but I don't know if MDC were as influential or not as DK... certainly not in an overseas sense. DK were more popular however than MDC in a general sense. Still remain so today.
I love the song but I like the studio version better. Although with the studio version you don't get the great performance a theater elements. Great performance Jello but when you sing you should be more clear so we can hear the lyrics
you really think I have a say in this? this is a live video recording of a song sang by the Dead Kennedys, this is a VEE_DEEEOOOH are you trying to teach us morality? if drug becomes a crotch for anyone using it do you think this video will have a great effect on an addict?
i don't have any intention in "teach an addict" good for them, i was saying about expose not rehabilitate, i don't care, i'm not they psychologist to analize what is the motivation and what emotion replaces that it cannot be achieved in any other state.
Nobody's trying to teach anybody morality. If anything, the guy you were talking to is right. I mean, Jello even says he likes to write about issues from other people's points of view. Not to push his "values" on anyone, but to just be like, "Hey. Look at this. It's happening in the world."
@hayqueserconstante totally DID NOT MEAN TO THUMBS UP THIS REMARK!!! Why even listen to this if you're gunna make some... judgemental remark about things you can't possibly understand. You don't know any of these "chickenshits" personally... what the fuck could you know about them enough to make a remark like that!! LOL. Poor person... i feel for people that have to bring others down to feel better. Okay, now try to judge me... feel free to try and tear me down in any way you feel.
Dead kennedys was vocprob one of the wierdest sounding hardcore punk bands at that time, not just because of jellosals, but because of the way they plaayed, like in this song, but thats what made this band a legend, especially the lyrics, FUCK YEAH dead kennedys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry, I'm a non native English speaker, and most of the times I can get the irony or sarcasm of a song. Is this lyrics ironic? He means drugs are just an easy way out of reality or the solution to an empty life? Thank u.
only the ramones come close to the caliber d.k. does. i get so angry at posers who try to talk the game. i only wish i'd seen d.k. in progress like i saw the ramones. different entities, but one vision. different approach.
hells yeah.. fucking classic kennedys.. this is the shit that made me look at the meaning of "punk" and shit of that sort.. thanks for the things ive never seen
I saw the band do this bass only in Brum 1981 ( the lead broke down). Jello is still my favorite male punk singer - not just coz his vocals but his stage manner too. The guys a mad fucking genius.
