For people who say this sounds like Japanese, I say this (I'm Shanghainese), they are changing the tones a little bit and the speed. If you speak "proper" Shanghainese, it will not sound like this. However, the dialet is correct. I have no trouble understanding what they are saying.

Actually many Shanghaiese take Japanese as the second foreign language because of the natural advantage. And they love Japanese animations, including me. I also leant a little Japanese and I found it is easier for me to pronounciate Japanese than English. But my Japanese friend in USA said to me and an American friend "Japanese is NOT necessary!" ORZ

Shanghaiese is represented in Japanese culture as how Middle-ages Europeans would represent Jews in their painting. I watched this Japanese movie made in 95, it talks about Chinese youth in Japan, there is one scene where a pimp asking money from a girl who became a whore, he was dressed up all black and etc and all he says was 'chopyo'(cash)........ Which is very ironic here too.

i think its very easy to manipulate shanghainese to sound like japanese and korean. normal conversational shanghainese doesn't exactly sound like that.

yifengsy - That's true, simply because out of all the Chinese dialects, Shanghainese is not considered fully a tonal language, because it has some pitch accent. Japanese isn't a tonal language, so Shanghainese might sound more like it without the varying tones.

Japanese was heavily influenced by South Eastern Chinese dialects. Also, some Chinese languages in that area ( Wu, Min ) tend to drop the ending consonants, like in Japanese.
