  • How extraordinary! Posting videos of artists in order to make negative comments! I have not seen this before! And then of course it attracts more unpleasant comments.

  • I must be deaf then....

  • This video is not half as bad as the rather offensive title makes it out to be. Dessay's approach, not unusual these days, unfortunately, is to conflate acting with singing. Even Callas hastened her vocal decline by that same mistake which one can and should learn not to repeat. The voice is not a verismo tool and should not be used in a literal sense. Emotion is embedded in the music - there is no need to scoop and scream out high notes as she also did in Lucia, Hofmann and here.

  • I love Natalie, she's great, but I must admit your comment made me laugh a lot, in general the titles of your videos are really hilarious (even though I disagree with them)

Your comments are so offensive, you make me laugh a lot

Please keep uploading videos, I actually want to keep laughing

  • I can see that the title of this video has attracted an ugly horde of no life trolls. Americans used to throw pieces of horseshit at George Washington's carriage. I suppose this is a comparable modern way of trying to "have some effect". Oh, well... I suppose it is not as bad as writing graffiti on other people's walls.

  • hysterical nutter

  • I spoke to Natalie once after a dress rehearsal in Carnegie Hall months ago. She was coughing badly while singing. I was concerned and asked if she is fine. She told me she's having problems with her voice and that's why she wants to retire. "Retire? You?" Then I boldly asked what she wants to do then? "raising horses".. I was speechless.

Regardless the condition of her voice, she is truly a great artist, brings her passion and totally devotes herself into the most difficult art form- opera

  • looks like she's about to spit her uterus out of her "puzzle" in every single upper register note

  • A sad [and unfortunately ubiquitous] living testament to the dangers of singing with muscle and youth rather than technique and reserve.

I think the audience just feels allegiance to their broken toy, who can no longer do the tricks that gave them thrills in the 90s.

Rather than insert horribly broken, desperate and unmusical embellishments ( 7:59 ), why doesn't Dessay choose music that shows her strengths?

The Shepherd in Tosca is rarely sung by an adult, but maybe it would be novel.

  • She's fabulous. Fierce. Love her. You? Well, the best part of you ran down your mother's legs or ended up the on the hook of a knitting needle.

  • Not a beautiful sound... I like her Lucia last year and col rep because her timbre was gorgeous. But a small, tired voice.. that I don`t like anymore.

  • @Serinia4melodic "Not a beautiful sound"??? Did you catch the thunderous roar of applause the audience gave her? Not always, but many, many times Dessay is greeted by that sort of audience reaction. You, poor thing with your soul eaten out by your own bile, are what by comparison? If you are in fact from Romania, you are not a good advertisement for that place.

  • I liked her before...now she has great difficulties, it's pity...

  • The title of this really rather good performance by Dessay certainly called a lot of trolls out of their holes. That's the way they are.

  • Trolls will be trolls. Sometimes they run in groups. In groups or not, they all just seem nasty. I suppose it makes them feel better about something.

  • What misery?

  • im curious to hear her in the Traviata telecast in a few months, maybe this was an off night

  • Well, I don't really like her either.

  • Where she study Stanislavsky

    She like his best pupil

  • I love Natalie Dessey and Laurent Pelly

  • Give her a break.. this is not a bad performance, only if you compare it to the ease of her younger years.. I rather enjoyed this!

  • But she rolled her eyes and twisted her elbows and jumped on her left foot so WONDERFULLY!

Bad acting doesn't make up for bad singing, amen.

  • Les aigus sont affreux et poussés. brrrrrrrrr

  • I'd be honest; If i was a singer and my voice gets shot i would just have some type of back up career to turn to. It beats singing in denial and robbing people who pay to hear the mess and have your devoted fans chear for you...lol..

  • HEY! brividokaldo! I think that you are an idiot! And like so many have said "GET A LIFE"! YOU WILL NEVER KNOW OR APPRECIATE ANTHING THIS AMAZING WOMAN CAN DO!!! I LOVE HER SPIRIT! THE FACT THAT SHE STARTED LATE IN LIFE,2 SURGERIES, HER PASSION FOR LIFE .....YOU KNOW NOTHING! BUT I'M GLAD THAT YOU POSTED THIS VIDEO BECAUSE I LOVE IT,REGARDLESS OF WHAT YOU MAY THINK! I LOVE HER.

  • @mpullella26 Now, be easy on brividokaldo. This may BE his life. Natalie, however, goes on from success to success and clearly has quite a nice life and career.

  • I know she has had her ups and downs musically speaking. But when she is good, she is terrific. She is also a wonderful actress. So many great singers are lousy actors. She is wonderful to watch.

  • brividokaldo: suck my dick!

    Natalie Dessay: Take my heart

  • Well it coud be still worse...

  • Very idiotic comment by the uploader!! Why would u load something just to bash her! I agree about you getting a life!!

  • veramente qui è molto brava tecnicamente

  • moi aussi je lui adore.

  • @gmsoyls Moi aussi...elle est magnifique! Mais, elle n'est pas Callas....

  • J'ADORE NATALIE DESSAY.

  • Beautiful!

  • @tklogan111809

every person like you has the intellect of a midge...I don't find her voice overly SMALL

  • P.s I have found all your videos with similar bitchy comments and think you need to get a life and stop criticising others who sing a thousand times better than you ever could brividokaldo!

  • WTF is with the comments you uploaded with the video? She sounds a lovely as ever - a little tired yes but everyone has "off days" If you can sing this better, brividokaldo , upload it and I'd love to hear. vous etes une salope!

  • This was just fine! Just a little tired,

  • I wish I could see you singing so many years and such a hard repertoire like she did! She is a true artist, those who say she's not anymore-find yourself a life instead of posting negative comments like this!

  • it such pity she loosing her voice! She had so nice coloratura! She is going to sing Traviata this yera at the Met in 2012!She may needs some rest!

  • @MariaCallasLegend For years now the you tube trolls have been saying Natalie is losing, or has lost her voice. Natalie just keeps going on from one new success to another. I have a feeling that the trolls don't have much success in life.

  • @MrHbc3 I love her as an artist...but i hear a continue vocal decline...thats my opinion///

  • Time for retirement, Natalie...

  • The applause at the end was cut off quickly (by the uploader?) and the applause at the beginning (for whatever came before) were both thunderous from an obviously happy audience. Some people can't stand that. I like Dessay normally and liked her a lot in this. I also have viewed many YT uploads of her interacting with other people. SHE has wonderful manners.

  • DISGUSTING!

  • everyone has an off day........NUFF SAID!

  • Powers rangers... Go! what a classless tacky trollop this she-thing is. The crowed goes crazy because they've gotten the virus that caused the Met's audiance to go brain dead and to applaud to anything and everything, i'm sure Netrebko gave it to them like some STD.

  • @NEBESHIKU

    lol

  • Mrs. Miss or Mr. Brividokaldo, to make such comments of any artist is simply awful. May I ask what your training is to make such nasty remarks? If you are a singer, post some of your singing so we can see the material you are made off. If you are simply a critic, go back to school and review the ethics of criticism.

  • From the little bit of the beginning of the audience reaction they seem to have felt the same way I did about it. Wunderbar!!!! Dessay has lots of very devoted fans, sells a lot of records and tends to be very appreciated by audiences. For some reason she also attracts a few trolls. My guess is that she like to do things "not in the old way", and some people don't have the ability to change from what they were taught was THE WAY. Maybe it's just people who like being rude.

  • @MrHbc3 Well the old WAY is the the BEST way in the field of music. People like you have brought on the age of shrill manufactured singers with no clear vowels, squeezed sounds and are TOLERATED as opposed to the 1900's until late 70's and 80's where we were blessed with singers(Del Monaco, Tebaldi, Verrett, Callas, Bumbry, Price, Steber, Muzio, Caruso, Gigli, Bjorling, EARLY CAREER Alagna, EARLY CAREER Pavarotti, EARLY Millo, Ponselle for heaven's sake, and audiences who knew better

  • completamente de acuerdo, NATALIE ES UNA GRANDE SOPRANO, QUERIDA, RESPETADA, Y ADMIRADA.

  • Honestly more concerned for the chorus 0.o

but she has openly stated she was sick during this concert.

  • @brividokaido: what a stupid comment!!! Ms. Dessay can sing this better, yes - but 99% of all sopranos can't sing as she do here. Btw: perhaps you should think about your charakter, why are you so interested in execution of singers? Why don't you look for renditions, which bring joy in your heard and tears in your eyes?

  • @filmevoncosima maybe your wrong:D I know a lot of sopranos that sing better:) they just don`t have her fame... those sopranos that actually study in this shit music industry work their asses off for a long time!!

  • @Serinia4melodic "this shit music industry"???? I think I can see your outlook on life.

  • @MrHbc3 you are heavily underpaid in non-known opera houses. Dessay sings like a child compared to all romanian prima donas. ANd yes the shit music industry, because a classical singer is underpaid, again, over the mainstream whores. whores yes, no voice, no music only loopback.

  • Dearest Brividokaldo, your videos are interesting indeed and your comments, although often true are horrifyingly insensitive and unnecessary. Are you a singer? Do you understand the pressure, the commitment, the discipline and the INCREDIBLE hard work that goes into this profession. I do. Please pause and perhaps contemplate the next time you prepare to post something.

  • @vitroz An artist has to learn to be open to criticism and they WILL be harsh at times. Learn to deal with it if you want to be in this profession. If you suck, then you suck. Point blank. Dessay sounds 90% of the time like a shrieking banshee and that is FACT. Now your personal perception of sound is at this point questionable if you happen to enjoy hearing shrieking banshees. Can you tell the difference between her and Eleanor Steber? or any "dramatic" soprano these days with Birgit Nilsson?

  • @Detie002 Ok, so your taste judgment ("shrieking banshee") is now an objective fact? And if we disagree, we're the ones being stupidly subjective?

  • @LordHettrick "shrieking banshee" was very subjective, I apologize for that. Her sound is frail and breathy, vowels unclear, harsh on the higher register, her piano is very tight, a slight wobble on her high notes.

  • @vitroz It is an insult to singers that know better and have gone through the politics of music schools and auditions to see comments like yours. When someone tells you that your voice is too big and they cannot cast you with any of the mosquitos "singing" these days then you'll understand the discipline and HARD work that goes into this profession. HEAL your hears with Rosa Ponselle, Renata Tebaldi, pre 1960 Maria Callas, Eleanor Steber, Claudia Muzio, Birgit Nilsson, Robert Merril, TITA RUFFO.

  • @Detie002 you know not of what you speak. Good luck to you!

  • the opera of Beverly Hills!!!

  • 4:30 ...This is painful.

  • @brividocaldo I rated a thumb down this video not because of Nathalie's performance but because of your abrupt comment below the video!

If you don't like this perf (and I respect totaly your personnal taste) why posting it anymay if not for your selfish pleasure to make an unpleasant somment?

  • I really don't see how this performance is worthy of the introduction. There is nothing wrong with it, if anything, in addition to singing it well, she also expresses it physically and acts every dramatic notion by the music. Please open your eyes and instead of giving a great artist some imagined bad atributes as a result of your personal dislikes, you should go and find something else to fill your time with.

  • Incredibly good performance by a world class musician who uses her declining physical gifts with mastery and grace. She has given everything in her to her fans and we appreciate what she was in her youth, at the height of her career and now as time catches her. Her voice is beautiful and so is she.

  • Sounds like she might have been ill or tired....not lacking in skill, etc...When I am really tired, I can't get a note out...

  • Natalie had polyps removed. Serious surgery for a singer... let alone a coloratura. You can't expect her to have the exact same voice after that. I thought this performance was good. It may not be her best, but you can't say such strong things about her when she had a life-changing surgery right before this performance.

  • I think of Regine Crespin, who also had problems technically at a given point, but who remained one of the most touching singers/actresses to me. These singers are such exquisite actresses, that the way they tell a story, is more important than them being perfect. These people work so hard. If you would really emphatise with that, you would have changed the name of this vid ( please do so), in : "Natalie Dessay, a living singing actress." Thank you for having become a little more loving.

    jahren vorher erbrachten leistungen.

  • I have enjoyed Natalie Dessay for 15 years - what troubles me is the facial contortions, over acting when she should be focusing on her vocal technique. I wish she would stand still and SING. I really think Dessay should focus on more lyrical reperatoire now. Although she can still sing a high Eflat, it sounds harsh above high C. I really do not see her doing Puritani at the MET in a couple of years.

  • beautiful!

  • Okay, I cringed a little bit at the staccato notes at the 8:00 mark, but to call the entire performance "a new horror" is a bit of an overstatement. It is an overall great performance and the only thing I'd call a "horror" here is her outfit.

  • @erginakif I loved this dress in fact: very french this little chique chanel dress, lovely pearls....what do you dislike about it??

  • I also think this is very good singing :)

  • What was wrong with this? I thought she sang fine.

  • The funniest thing is the chorus!

  • No amount of over-acting can make up for a voice that is past its prime. And as for the chorus singing in syncopation with the orchestra, instead of on the beat - lol!!!

  • The moron who posted this is not only illiterate, but knows nothing of our living, breathing art form! Indeed, she is not Sutherland or Gruberova when it comes to sheer technique, but neither are they her peer in the performing art! I love them all. Learn to love the art form, not the attendant bitch fest!

  • Well, after 20 years as the coloratura queen of the world (alongside Gruberova) this is outstanding. Her talent, musicianship and excellent way to express herself making her divine, nothing else. Such writing as the "up-loader" made is the most of misery you will find here. Please brividokaldo. Get som taste and knowledge before you act this cruel and childish again. Every word from you is a shame. Ms. Dessay has triumphed hundreds of times on stage, this performance included!!! BRAVA!!!

  • She has sung too much too long.

  • the only terrible thing is that there is a guy a guy on youtube posting videos from great singers ( some of them very high rated and famous) and that he makes comments on them like he is a singing god and they al are crap!! You have to be very pompous idiot for that. Think twice brikiadvokado and stop with this silly stuff because its only bad for you not for the singers!

  • @tenoreDB Couldn't have stated it better! Thanks, tenoreDB.

  • This is a true singing dead for the joy of brain dead audiances!

  • its" better" than her Sonnambula at the Met

  • @OLIVCHEN77 I loved her Sonnambula at the Met.

  • "Neid ist die höchste Form von Anerkennung"

  • The only thing that's really miserable here is that somebody for what he takes to be the sake of music dumps his aggressive sentiments on a singer, putting her in the pillory like that. Shame on you, "brividokaldo".

  • How dare you write that desciption? Dessay had and has ups and downs as all great opera singers, and this I can say is NOT representative of her art. Brava Dessay

  • Comment removed

  • Agree with cantorandopera. If we all could be so talented as Ms. Dessay! Even on her off days, and most of us have them, she is still magical. I have yet to hear anyone (soprano) who can touch her true gift.

  • The comments by the uploader are ludicrous. They don't even deserve a response! I was expecting to hear cracked notes, flat tones, dreadful singing - nothing of the sort here. And even that can be excused. When you are brought out to the public on a regular basis, you are bound to have some performances below your regular standard.I neither found this clip good or bad - was just ok, but for Ms. Dessay, a disappointment. However, that is no excuse to bash her.

  • such an overrated singer. terrible

  • @mrrk wtf. get a life you dumb shit

  • @distefano13069609 hummm, do you kiss your mummy with that mouth? She's a crap singer.

  • @mrrk do you have a boyfriend? you seem like a cock sucker

  • She had a greater career than any of the bitches trying to slam her can ever dream of

  • 6:57 to 7:00 shows some pretty scary singing technique that would hurt anyone's voice. Can't someone help this poor girl? Most of the rest of this clip does not show strong signs of straining in her vocal technique. But 6:57 to 7:00 is pretty scary stuff!!

  • @Cuteo05 I think saying Dessay's career "is over" is a little dramatic.

One has to consider that Dessay has been singing the high coloratura repertoire for more than 20 years, and the voice is bound to change with age and use. It is true that some of the coloratura and top notes in this performance were a bit labored, but she remains a wonderful singer and committed actress. She is shifting into more lyrical roles, and her career will likely continue with new and varied successes. Viva Natalie

  • I love very much Natalie! But her career is finished...

It remains nothing of the great singer she once was :(

  • bravo Natalie!!!!!

  • I agree with the audience. She's great. Somebody here has a problem and it ain't Natalie.

  • I cannot believe all of these crazy bad postings of this great and complete artist!!!Who are you??? Great singers with great contracts at La Scala, the Met???...Amazing teachers that created artist like her???...Can you at least listen to the audience applause at the end of the aria? Get over it please...Showing no respect for such a big star like Dessay means you are so squared and uneducated, and that, regardless whether you like or dislike her technique, style, face...or what ever!!

  • Yes. The audience's applause really showed their sorrow!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Really? And where were you when you posted this? In your underwear, picking your nose. Everyone has bad days, get over yourself and don't be a dick. Looking atyour channel it seems all you like to do is commemorate the faults of others. Petty much?

  • I saw this again after a while and again... My God this was Awful!

  • pas si dramatique que ca bisous natalie

  • Oooh...Natalie.....not so much. She needs to retrain her voice.

  • It's just shocking how some people seem to perversely enjoy the shortcomings of famous people in general and opera stars in particular. Dessay is a great singer, a great actress, and audiences love her. Deal with it!

  • this can´t be brushed off with "not one of her best performances.." it is worse than mediocre, a horrible, thin voiced, sreachy interpretation. as bad to the ear as it is to the eye.

and the gullible audience is duped into applauding because a mighty PR machine assures them "she is one of the greatest operatic singers of our time...(!)"

if this is "video bashing" it is entirely justified. this kind of singing is the death of belcanto.

  • @gestas60323 she wears chanel my god and does her best to portray Marie!

  • Dessay is an operatic fraud.

  • this is a result of a non-proper fast speed vocal training and too much singing ......that represents our time singing........compare with Muzio and Ponselle and you will see where we are standing today!

  • I expected a worse than horrible singing after such a negative description ! Brividocaldo, let's see how you would sing this aria ! Opera singers are human beings ! Remember that at once !

  • Well, it wasn't THAT bad! Maybe not entirely comfortable, but her high register hasn't been the same for some time. What was really scary was the male chorus not being able to get with the conductor and being completely off.

  • Yes she was not at her best but Not a disaster either. Bunch of hyperdemanding ears out there, it seems

  • Natalie Dessay is one of the world's most gifted sopranos. As an opera professional for many years I knew everything about the singer's lives and everything that could possibly have a negative effect on their performance. During the periods of menstruation and pre-menstruation many singers experience slight edema (swelling) of the vocal folds. There is a muffled quality in the low register. This is due to laryngeal water retention. The straining in the upper register is also due to hormones.

  • You gays are so cruel... maybe this was not her best night, but still... you are so demanding with someone who is just a human being... maybe you have to thank for the countless nights she gaves her best...

  • Hardly her best performance, but Dessay is still fabulous, no matter what. Kaythanxbai.

  • still sounds pretty nice to me, well apart from the necklace, which sounds a bit off key. ;)

  • Ok she's very fiery and expressive and has given us very energetic and charming performances but I think she put herself in grave danger by doing all those vocal acrobatics for many years - and also allowing many directors and conductors to take advantage of her passionate nature. She's obviously suffering here and pushing so much that the veins on her throat are about to pop...

  • HOW ABOUT THE CHORUS? They were off the entire time.

  • @Rcoppin91 Now that is soooo true.

For ever.

  • Beh, direi che dici tutto nella presentazione..... Cos'altro aggiungere?

  • I think she is soo amazing!

I really see no problem with this performance.

  • She is still one of the best coloratura out there today! <3

  • Juste magnifique comme toujours... Personne ne peut le nier. Quelle voix !

  • Okay, so she didn't quite hit those few notes... @brividokaldo do you realize how difficult this role is? And that particular spot is especially difficult! Besides that little hiccup, the aria was sung BEAUTIFULLY! So few opera singers commit to acting their part, and it's so refreshing to see someone with an outstanding voice like Natalie's actually put emotion and expression into their roles. Brava, Ms Dessay!

  • @noj8484 Yes but she's paid a lot of money to not make those mistakes. It doesn't matter how hard it is, it is her job to make it seem easy and not make any mistakes!!

  • Comment removed

  • @emma41093 That's the most preposterous comment anyone has posted to this video. "Paid" not to make mistakes? You sound absolutely delusional. And I'm speaking as someone who has never liked Dessay.

  • @gustopheles WOW, I see this is a very controversial topic..... I forfeit!

  • Did she just have an off night and all of you jerks are on crack and have nothing better to do than bash a great artist? I am out of the loop on Nat. What sort of problems has she been having and what have the docs said?

  • This was HORRIBLE. I remember her talking about how bad was Callas technique. Who has bad technique???... who had two nodes in her vocal cords???. Sorry to be so harsh but this was AWFUL!

  • @ezayi Bad enough that you post a bunch of stupid criticisms of one of the very best singers of today... but if you are talking about the Charlie Rose interview you are lying. Natalie was very, very complimentary about Callas' singing AND acting. CR did say that some people did say that Callas did not have a perfect voice and Natalie agreed but stated emphatically that Callas had great musicianship and interpretive abilities along with perhaps the best acting abilities around.

  • How come "brividokaldo" seems to upload clips of singers having a not-such-a-good day? I mean really-singers are people, not robots-if you want a perfect rendition every time stick with CDs. And the names of your clips are horrid: "Natalie Dessay....a singing dead", "A disastrous Traviata", "Poor Renee", Horrific fillato"... I mean what do you do for a living-sell tickets at the opera? Is that why you're so bitter? GET A LIFE

  • Opera fans are always making extreme comments - the less they know about music, the morte abrupt comments they make.

Personnally I find this very beautiful.

  • @AlainNaigeon

as long as we dont see her tits onstage she is acceptable nowadays. When she starts showing her tits onstage or have someone eating her pussy or jump like a retard around and on the tenors just because she is too much of an actress!! (her words) then she becomes unbearable.

Abrupt comments reflect abrupt and ridiculous singers

You go ahead onstage and show your tits and have your pussy eaten by the tenor and you ll see what comments you ll get :)))) And you ll deserve them

  • this was an off night, she doesnt normally sound this bad, even at the present. All things considered I dont think she sounds that bad (though, im no fool, i know this isnt pristine); shes 45, most coloraturas voices have considerably deteriorated byt his point, and shes had 2 different node surgeries, give the woman a break. the "supreme" divas were no exception either, sutherland and callas both sang horifically before they reitred

  • Abuse of one's instrument is ultimately that individuals responsibilty. Stop trying to attribute "drama" to bad singing and unhealthy vocal technique. Bad singing has led us to this point, where a Dessay can get away with grotesque singing by covering it up with flapping her arms or turning a cartwheel and some call it "art". Perhaps listening to a Sutherland, a Verrett, a Nilsson might clear out your ears...but I doubt it. The damage is done...forever.

  • @tosca121 it seems that she has trouble even singing in her tessitura. (maybe she was sick). The voice is unpredictable. Remember you can't cancel a programmed event so easily. It is a commitment you have.

I respect her so much. It is not easy to get on a stage. I've only done it once and I was very ill a few days before (anxiety). You need control of yourself. That's pretty hard

I think here you are putting your vocal health on danger, just listen the staccato notes 7:58 . She needs a break.

  • I am sick and tired of ignoramuses throwing around the "Callas" name to defend indefensible singing! Why do you think she quit? Do any of you think for one moment La Callas didn't know what she sounded like? That she couldn't feel what those sounds she was making felt like? Whatever the reasons for the decay in her vocal health, she quit because she wouldn't continue making sounds that she wouldn't have tolerated from anyone else.

  • @brividokaldo Pffff, you're very stupid to put that title ........... Just remember that we're human, not perfection, nobody, even you . And singing like she's doing with 2 vocals surgeries. Come on !!!! You can say it wasn't her best day but be cool !

PS : it wasn't that bad ! Show me what you can do ^_^ i want to compare !!!!!

PS 2 : do high notes when you're ill and you'll understand

  • Well, after 20 years as the coloratura queen of the world (alongside Gruberova) this is outstanding. Her talent, musicianship and excellent way to express herself making her divine, nothing else. Such writing as the "up-loader" made is the most of misery you will find here. Please brividokaldo. Get som taste and knowledge before you act this cruel and childish again. Every word from you is a shame. Ms. Dessay has triumphed hundreds of times on stage, this performance included!!! BRAVA!!!

  • Terrifying? Misery? No art? Lack of technique? What are you all talking about? This was a daring, no-holds-barred performance. Dessay has a fabulous technique and is a brilliant actress. Like Callas, she's not afraid to sacrifice the perfectly-produced tone for dramatic emphasis. Anyone who has seen her live knows this. The naysayers here sound a little jealous to me.
