I have nothing against athiest I just think they make statements about the bible when they did not read the book. I just think a majority of athiest are the most self serving and arrogant people I have ever dealt with. There are a few decent ones but most athiest are so offended by any religion they feel the need to go around insulting people and trying to act superior in some way. The only thing I see in them is a lack of respect for others but I would say they do have moral guidelines.
I am an atheist, and I agree with most of what you are saying. there are plenty of verses that can be used to prove your point as to how gruesome the biblical laws were.
That said, the example: "bashing of children's heads against rocks" is taken out of context. Ps 137 is a statement saying how the enemies of jerusalem would take pleasure in hurting their children if they could, not the bible advocating it. Because atheists are criticized so heavily, it is important to try to be above reproach.
@vcimpeanu1 I find the broader themes in the Bible to be much better evidence against its divinity than individual quotes, anyway. How God acted in Job. Passover. Failure to condemn slavery. And, of course, the legacy of the Bible itself in inspiring war, torture, and other horrible acts.
If there is no supreme lawgiver i.e God then there is no supreme law. If there is no SUPREME LAW then there IS NO LAW. And so, an atheist has the ability to have morals but outside of his own judgement he has no basis for making them authoritative, they are his alone and are an invention of his own mind. He replaces God's law with his own, therefore becoming god to his/her self and therefore, unbeknownst to their own self, a satanist.
@straydogbluesman No, there are no supreme laws. There are, of course, individual laws in individual sovereignties. The lack of supreme law is not so problematic; secular societies seem to be doing a much better job of acting morally than most of the religious ones.
Besides, a desire for some overarching moral rules doesn't answer the question of where we get them from. The Bible? Well, how are you judging whether the Bible's morality is valid? We're back to using our own judgment again.
Morality (originating from the 10 commandments) is now just common sense. In this day and age, whether a person is religious or not, I don't think that's the center of the matter anymore.
Why do Christians think Atheists have no morals. Before my parents started shoving religion down my throat, I saw my very catholic grandmother lying a lot, in church, to her friends, etc. I knew what she was doing was bad because I wouldn't like to be lied to. Which of course my parents did too, and I later found out: St Claus, the tooth fairy, easter bunny, god. With religion I was told there would be punishment for doing so, but before I had religion, I figured out all by myself. Morals are human, religion adds the fantasy.

Ever think the reason that the bible was written was to pretty much brain wash everyone into behaving a certain way? Children aren't going to "sin" if they are utterly convinced that if they do, they will burn in hell for eternity. Prevailing morals in western society are heavily influenced by Christianity. Being an atheist doesn't shield you from that. As an atheist I never get hassle from religious types, and I live in a conservative part of the U.S. The only hassle I see in real life is hicks abusing muslims, and atheists abusing religion. I found inner peace when I stopped assaulting religion and started developing my atheist philosophy, because until then life, death, love and the self were not adequately resolved.

The first Commandment, as it is written in the authorized King James Bible - 1611; which is the PRESERVED Word of God says that "Thou shalt have no other gods before me". I just think a majority of athiest are the most self serving and arrogant people I have ever dealt with. There are a few decent ones but most athiest are so offended by any religion they feel the need to go around insulting people and trying to act superior in some way. The only thing I see in them is a lack of respect for others but I would say they do have moral guidelines.

I am an atheist, and I agree with most of what you are saying. there are plenty of verses that can be used to prove your point as to how gruesome the biblical laws were.
That said, the example: "bashing of children's heads against rocks" is taken out of context. Ps 137 is a statement saying how the enemies of jerusalem would take pleasure in hurting their children if they could, not the bible advocating it. Because atheists are criticized so heavily, it is important to try to be above reproach.

If there is no supreme lawgiver i.e God then there is no supreme law. If there is no SUPREME LAW then there IS NO LAW. And so, an atheist has the ability to have morals but outside of his own judgement he has no basis for making them authoritative, they are his alone and are an invention of his own mind. Besides, a desire for some overarching moral rules doesn't answer the question of where we get them from. The Bible? Well, how are you judging whether the Bible's morality is valid? We're back to using our own judgment again.

Before my parents started shoving religion down my throat, I saw my very catholic grandmother lying a lot, in church, to her friends, etc. I knew what she was doing was bad because I wouldn't like to be lied to. Which of course my parents did too, and I later found out: St Claus, the tooth fairy, easter bunny, god. With religion I was told there would be punishment for doing so, but before I had religion, I figured out all by myself. Morals are human, religion adds the fantasy.

Prevailing morals in western society are heavily influenced by Christianity. Being an atheist doesn't shield you from that. As an atheist I never get hassle from religious types, and I live in a conservative part of the U.S. The only hassle I see in real life is hicks abusing muslims, and atheists abusing religion. The flaws that you claim my Bible has is a product of your own misinterpretations. The reason that I chose the authorized KJV-1611 is because it is the ONLY source of the preserved and INFALLIBLE Word of God. All of the other bibles are just "spin offs", so to speak. This evidence cannot be proven to someone who already has it made up in his foolish mind and heart that there isn't a God. God will not force His spirit on you, you have to seek Him with a contrite heart. Your proud spirit will be the death of you. Also, nothing created God. God is the creator of all things and He existed before the beginning of time. No amount of intellect on earth can explain this.

This means that IF a female having a virgin birth is possible, then the female ONLY can give birth to females because they DO NOT have the Y chromosome. The first Commandment, as it is written in the authorized King James Bible - 1611; which is the PRESERVED Word of God says that "Thou shalt have no other gods before me". Any God other than the Almighty One is a false god created in the minds and hearts of wicked men. Every version of the Bible outside of the authorized KJV is a "watered down", adulterated, and perverted version. When God speaks, you're not "hearing voices"; you'll know it's God!

@toolsfan The Bible says that anything that is not of God is wicked, and He will part from it. Can't you see, your logic doesn't agree with God's word, and it never will. No one wants to control you. Your free will of not accepting salvation through Christ will be the determining factor of God's Judgment for your soul in eternal damnation. God said this; not me or any Christian. God still wants your soul to spend an eternity with Him because He still loves you. Why is mankind so disobedient?
