@KazimsChannel It can be done but requires a LOT of actual whittling and is VERY time intensive. Also, it's a great way to kill time and just relax if you enjoy "whittling away the hours" on a summer afternoon.
making wooden chains is very nice, and i believe that your way of making them is very nice.
other thing i liked even more, is your polite and very fair-play way to give a honor to P&C for sending you that nice router. keep up with nice ideas, and just continue to be human woodworker ;-). yours audience is human, too,(at least i hope we are human)
@crabs73 not all are human, some can be real donkeys. (i'd spell another four legged equestrian relation, but my son is learning to spell and is watching the video too)(
Pretty funny posting here. Not sure why I'd want to make a wooden chain, other than to use my PORTER CABLE power tools. About as useful as wooden piston rings.
Cover the top of the PC router and see how long it takes for the fan blades to be spit out. Trashed my PORTER CABLE replacing the fan. They DIDN'T send me a new one.
I really liked this, and enjoyed seeing the sense of humor you have showed up in this, in such a fun way. You were right, it wasn't in the way, but still very obvious, and even the little 'P & C' on your nails was a cute addition. I never have had any interest in making a chain, but the technique you use with the jigs is REALLY helpful with the ideas of what you are doing. I did something similar about 15 years ago, when I knew so little about woodworking anyway. Would have been better your way.
check out my channel for a link to point2shop; a website where you can earn points buy prizes off of amazon by completing survey, and watching videos.
one thing you didnt mention that might escape some people is that you dont need to break each link. in the 5 piece chain only links 2 and 4 would need to be broken to make the chain lol. probably obvious but might save someone a few minutes. Use for it.. Unusual curtain tie backs maybe? thanks for a great video as ever
I made your "chain ", and i found it VERY useful and safer, to cut off all the corners with the band saw, before routing the outside. Thanks for a very interesting but utterly useless project. I have had several " how did you do that" comments. I just tell em, I can tell you, but then I have to shoot you. :-) Oh by the way, I used a Skil router, I hope that was ok :-) BTW, I do have a Porter Cable 7518, but it is a bit heavy and bulky for this small project

a hangin bird house from a tree using that chain would be awsome. or maybe a chain to hold a hanging light or maybe a wooded chandelier. just a few ideas?
I always was fascinated w/ the old guys at Scout camp when I was a kid who carve a series of links out of ONE piece of wood w/ a scout knife.
Now I'm that old guy and I'd want to do something similar using one of my 3 P/C routers and homemade jigs to rough out horz and vert links interconnected out of 1 stick, and use a knife to cut out the waste wood between the links and finish.
(i.e.) No splitting every other link and re-gluing.
the only porter cable product I have is my drill press. I did have a porter cable router but it died and I have twelve other routers to take it's place. (I used to have a thing about routers) now I have a thing about the lathe....but ther is not room in my shop for twelve of them so I guess I will have to do with one. Do you know anyone who wants to buy twelve routers? ,,,,Just kidding....as always ....really cool project.
BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO!!!!!!!!!! I so loved it,Porter cable didn't send me anything I have a whole shop chocked full of Porter Cable due to great product placement like from Norm. Now lets see if we can get Delta to send you a cabinet saw!!!!!!!!!! I can't wait to see the "product placement" on that one!!!!
I am disapointed you split the links... I carved a 10 link chain with a ball in a box on one end out of one piece and thought you were going to show a chain without splitting links to join it together.
After having sais this I did find it interesting... Thank you
person who carries objects.....two or more wires running side by side and bonded, twisted or braided together to form a single assembly.....a device that forwards data packets between computer networks. How's that for hidden product placement !?
Good video, Steve. Such subtle product placement...what was the name of that tool company again? ;-) If you work on it all year you'll have some good long chains for next Halloween. Either that or you could use the chains as a home decor element somewhere...or you could lock up that router from...uh...what's their name again?
For once, I disagree, I don't care what a jig looks like, as long as it works, it could look like it was chewed by my dog (witch has happened), or dropped off a tall building. As long as the finished product looks good, and it was fairly fast, the jig did its job.
@harussell Octavio did in Mexico, see 4:40. Sorry Porter Cable but you, like many others, failed us all when you kept that American price on your products whilst sending our jobs across our borders.
I know what I would do with that chain. I'm always trying to think of different shapes of wood to cut for my pet parrot toys....those links would make a perfect size for my parrots to turn to sawdust.
I kept thinking of the Wayne's World scene on product placement throughout this video haha. Great video as always.
I think you should make a completed chain to drape around your neck as woodworker bling. Could be a good costume for next Halloween, or if you want to produce another woodworking rap video.

If you had a Formica trimming bit, your "mistake" wouldn't have necessarily have been a mistake. The bearing is on the bottom of the bit. Although I imagine the link wouldn't have been high enough in that case.
