  • semaphore in CNW clip is EB approach to MX interlocking in the middle of Monona bay, only crossing of two RR's in the middle of a lake in the US!

  • The first clip shows a train arriving from the south at the West Washington Ave. Milwaukee Road depot while the second clip shows a train arriving from the east at the east side (Blair St.) Chicago & Northwestern depot. Both depots remain today. The C&NW depot was renovated 35 to 40 years ago to become Madison Gas & Electric's headquarters. Much of the exterior (minus the original entrance marquis and platform canopy) and parts of the interior of the building were retained.

  • that 2nd train on the C&nw is a Baldwin babyface not an Alco Dl-109

  • Milwaukee Road Fairbanks Morse C-Liner and C&NW Alco DL-109, not too shabby! Thanks for capturing a piece of history for us to see! Thanx fur sharin'!

  • OK, maybe I'm wrong. Now I think Train 1 is a MILW train arriving at the W. Main depot, the main Milwaukee Road terminal in Madison. The car that pulls up the crossing is on West Wash. I think. Train 2 is as described in my first comment. At one time, Madison was served by 2 railroads providing passenger service, each company from all 4 compass point. The last passenger train left town on 4/30/70. The next day was Amtrak and they quit madison. ETTS (everything eventually turns to s**t)

  • These were shot at Blair St. The CNW depot is to the left. Train 1 is an arriving train from Milw., you see it coming in to the Wilson St. depot which was their east-side platform. The two lines crossed in the middle of Blair St. today, going east from Madison, the old MILW line is a bike path thru the Atwood neighborhood. Train 2 was a departing CNW train for Chi. at the main CNW station (note the CNW hearald). Train 1 would have gone across the Isthmus to the W. Main depot.

  • Wow that is awesome!!! Amazing!

  • In the 50's the station was on the near east side of town on Washington. There is no passenger service any longer and I'm sure the station is long gone.

  • The station is still standing; its on West Washington Ave, just north of Regent St. It is directly next to the Kohl Center property. Currently there's a bike shop in the building; Williamson St. Bikes.

  • @mrfss The Milwaukee Road station in Madison is now a bicycle shop and has some gutted Milwaukee Road passenger equipment (including an F7) trying to sell them as office space!

  • That's very cool, Where exactly is it in Madison?
