  • Fom high atop the down town burger king the boy in the box, who is I, cautiously enters ooh aah land....is this a functional...ah....unit?

    (pause)

    "john, you're a fruit pie!"

  • John Landecker is truely a great DJ. When I was a kid growing up outside of Chicago WLS and John Landecker was always played in our house and in my car! Those Boogie Checks were fun to listen too! Always made me laugh. I never made it through to actually be on the show, but then again I didn't try much either. It was more fun to listen!! Keep the music playing John!!

  • the very best my favorite dj and loved his on air personality a true professional with some excellent words of wisdom for new broadcasters wish radio could be the same as it was when john was on the air a true pro

  • WHAT? This hack's still alive??? Too bad all those cigarettes haven't done their work yet...

  • I was part of this film crew. I remember he showed us his drivers license to prove that "Records" truly is his middle name. This movie was done over the course of three nights.

  • I lived 500 miles away from Chicago as a kid but every night. WLS would turn up the power and transmit all over. Id wait and listen to this every night in the 70's. Good memories!!

  • "I am not going to manufacture an image for myself as far as trying to be something other than I'm not." HUH? WHAT? Boogie check, John!

  • Awesome response to caller at 4:32

    So cool.

  • Ahh yes,John Records Landecker!! I listened to him many years ago when I lived in Chicago. Great DJ and one of the best in the business.

  • Many a night here in north Texas listening to WLS after KLIF went off at sundown and the local rock station signed off at midnight. The signal came in best with strong north wind. :>) It was neat that we could hear a different perspective on the news and would hear songs on WLS that were not played on KLIF for some reason.

Landeckers Boogie Check on the last two WLS rewinds weekends were the highlight of the weekend.

  • His "radio voice" so much different than his regular voice in his interview. Popular then, and I loved it, but that kind of "radio voice" is made fun of now.

  • Chicago is, for my money, the greatest radio market in the US. It is a pleassure to watch these clips on Landecker, live in action, as he is surely one of the all-time greats. Ya gotta love the fact that a Boogie Check is included here, complete with John's casual off-air comments on how he disagrees with management as to what keeps people calling the radio station. Of course, John is right, that the kids would call in because at any moment they could be live on the air.

  • I have this half hour film on VHS. It's called the Columbia College film, and is a pretty famous bootleg. The titles are missing from the intro and extro of what is posted here. Also called "Profile of a DJ". Landecker invited a Chicago Columbia College film student into the studio one evening to film him while he worked. It is, to the best of my knowledge, the only film that exists of John Records Landecker, on the job during his 9 1/2 years at WLS (1972- 1981).

  • Yea! I used to smoke in the food store while shopping! Can you imagine that nowadays?

Chicago radio was excellent back then, even the AM stations were. I remember this stuff as if it was yesterday.

    Thanks for posting!

  • Ahhhh there was something in this clip you will never see today......

    Smoking in the studio:)

  • Is the board op Yyovnne Daniels?

  • After all these years Landecker has finally grown into his awesome voice...He's old enough to look like he sounds!

  • Thanks for this. What memories it brings back!!! Growing up in North Florida I couldn't wait for the sun to go down and the big city radio stations such as WLS to manifest themselves. And John Records Landecker and the Boogie Check (ooh, ah) was the best! Once I got into college WLS was the preferred radio station we tuned into for the all night drives back to Florida. One station -- 11+ hours. Again, thanks for the memories!

  • thanks john landecker, for bringing a shitload of laughter to a lonely little girl's childhood.

  • "mmm hmm...he went home" LOL

  • Radio at its peak. Those were the days.

  • I remember seeing this film when I was in 8th grade. Yeah, I agree the old 50-kilowatt AM nighttime powerhouses had a certain charm and character that was lost as these stations moved on to other formats. IMO, though WLS's best years were the early 1980s when they segued to a more 'rockin' hits' format and would play songs that even the more 'aggressive' top-40 stations on FM (like Washington DC's Q107) wouldn't touch.

  • I remember sitting in the back of a police car -- driving a little too fast and having alcohol in our car -- and explaining to the policeman that things were not as they seemed to be...when on the police car radio came "Boogey Check"... I inserted the appropriate "ooh ahhh" at the right time. The policeman looked at me and said "ok young man.. you seem pretty cool - head straight home."

Thanks John Landecker for getting me out of trouble 350 miles away.

  • Boogie check boogie check eww ahh.

Great clip and funny to hear from Mr. C Kidd again, man that guy was so annoying.

Johns had a pretty good run in the radio business.
