Problem with recycling is that the crap isnt worth anything, most ppl are geard to want something for stuff they give away! THe root of the problem is the excess in our lifes! Check out "the story of stuff" via google.
@keithholden water is the worst insulator there is, it becomes ice infact in many climates. If u live in a warm place, this level of insulation would be awful. The water filled bottle scheme u invented would be like a heat accumulator in the day, and ruin your nightly sleep!
Why I don't drink bottled water. Be happy with less, buy bulk foods such as oats, barley and flour. Cook you own food at home. Packaged prepared food is the same dead end of consumption. Garden and eat as local as you can. The backyard is best. Then community. Then as a last supplement luxery items such as coco, coffee, tea and dried fruits.
I've been in the auto repair industry over 30 years now & I've seen the oil packaging go from cans made out of paper, with tin ends, then all tin, to todays easy pour plastic bottles. The only method of disposal was landfill up until a couple of years ago. Now the empty containers are picked up for recycling along with used filters & oil. Used & broken car parts get tossed into "crush cars" & sent to the steel yard for shredding. The newer the car, the more plastic the parts. Shredded & sorted
With the economic collapse most of us won't be able to afford bottled water much longer.
I use the same water bottle for a few months at a time, refilling it at the water cooler. It tastes better anyway.
I've been shaping my life to deal with peak oil for 5 or 6 years now and that's a lucky break for me. Most of what I've done for peak oil has also gotten me more ready for this financial meltdown that we've been heading into for a while now.
re: re-using plastic water bottles - get off the crazy train, don't just slow it down! those bottles are only intended for one use, and are made of cheaper plastics that break down over time and may be getting bisphenol-A and phalates into your water. use a stainless steel water bottle, or glass, or heck drink from a cup or water fountain.
I glanced around Amazon last night for one but haven't decided yet. I do intend to get one though. I'm sort of leaning toward the one below, since I'm sort of an urban survivalist these days.

The amount of plastic floating in the oceans is horrifying:-(
We have to stop burning and dumping our way through the earth's resources.

Build houses out of plastic,, Like lego bricks..
Same energy to recycle into lego bricks as it takes to make real bricks so no loss or gain.

Plastic is warmer, better insulation, can be coloured. In earth quake it can be plastic welded.
Bricks could be hollow or solid Like hard bubble wrap.

@keithholden plastic bottles are not UV resistant, its a fire hassard, like a potential Napalm house
