Dusty's an incredible singer, and she makes "The water is Wide" just ring. But we're spoiled with more modern versions- the orchestra is just too much baloney behind her. Dusty should have had just a really good pianist playing behind her on this one. To MusicMadMaurice- in my early days, I had a crush on Dusty, and Diana Rigg. But where Lulu is concerned, I have a dvd of a rock music video called "Red, White and Blues" which has, among others, Lulu singing the blues. I have a crush on Lulu NOW!
I was just born in 1965, and my fave version of this song is by Eva Cassidy. Charlotte Church did a great job with it also. Dusty Springfield is great talent too!
It is so weird listening to this version after listening to Charlotte Church's version... this music does not seem to fit the somber lilting feel of the lyrics at all, but I guess it's the era... Dusty's version sounds almost like "Good Times, Bad Times" by Edie Brickell.

I'm not sure Dusty did the right thing in leaving The Springfields. She could have been a great folk singer like our Joan or the incomparable namesake Mary Travers.... but Our Dust was a Jill of all trades......a soul singer, a folk singer, a great R & B singer,a ballad singer and a singer and interpreter of show tunes!!! Now tell me who else could do all that and do it well?! Dusty you were the best. Sing your wide range of material in heaven.......R.I.P.!!!!!!
There's a great NEW book on Dusty: 'The Invention of Dusty Springfield - Scenes From a BritPop Icon'. It's a fun read and a tribute to 'our' Dusty. Available on Amazon.com.
Someone didn't like this? YOU HAVE NO SOUL! This is gorgeousl, she looks great, the musical accompaniment is perfect. This and Poor Wayfaring Stranger are the highlights of the BBC dvd. Not that there are any misses. Best British female singer by a country mile!

Beautiful, beautiful....wonderful. I am thankful for Youtube like so many, but I envy those that had the pleasure of seeing her sing live in her glory days of performing.
As a Petula Clark fan I'm forever greatful that, unlike Pet, at least either Dusty's fan's or the BBC/ITV had enough sense to keep all these wonderfu tapes of her great tv shows from England back in the late 60's. So much of everything else was simply erased and taped over or just somehow lost. Her performances are of course irreplaceable.
@petclark1 In fact, as the sleeve notes for the DVD claim, BBC did destroy the Dusty tapes in late 1960s while an Aussie TV company kept the copies in violation of their contract with the BBC. Makes one wonder how it is important to follow the common sense instead of contracts and laws.
@WendySonglines I think that you should start taking your medication again, because if you think this is anything other than beautiful, and showing Dusty at her best, then you are not on this planet.
I must thank the poster for reminding of us how much talent was lost when Dusty died.
Like many authentic English folksongs this air pits an awkward lyric against a simple melody. Carrying this off demands a level of control of rubato that destroys mere entertainers like Joan Baez or Eva Cassidy.
I love the way Dusty can soften her voice when it is required to sing a song like this, then switch to her bold balad voice for something like You Don't Have To Say You Love Me. Thanks very much for posting.
What? There's a microphone? I hadn't noticed...I can't take my eyes off of Dusty's eyes.
Maybe someone can clarify something for me. I had always assumed that Dusty was rather tall and statuesque - I suppose due to her "larger-than-life" voice. I was surprised to have read allusion to the detail that she was actually rather petite. Can anyone confirm this?
I'm spellbound, listening to Dusty has got to be better than any drug, I'm certainly addicted to her, what a voice. God Bless yer Dusty lass R.I.P, you show them angels how its done girl. Ray♥ X X X

Even in monochrome, this looks good. I was 14 when this was made and madly in love with her. As well as Lulu, Sandy Shaw, Cilla Black and Diana Rigg.

Just Amazing - she takes an old traditional folk song and makes it sound up to the minute - just overloaded with feeling - marvelous -

this is one of the saddest songs ever
it begins by optimistic
so full of love and hope
and quickly ends
an end of useless and faded true love

So NOT the song? It's a simple laid back song but she can make any song sound wonderful. It's got a dreamy sentimental tone to it. Try it again.

i watched a t.v program today about famous painters and the presenter said there was no such thing as total perfection in life.
nothing is totally `perfect`.
perfection in reality is something that can never be attained.
as much as i admire dusty after watching this if i`m honest i have to agree with him.
have you seen the state of that microphone lead?
totally ruins the clip.

Yes, she was quite petite - about 5'2" or 5' 3" I think. Guess the wigs make her seem taller!
