Hey THANX! I went under novice mode and ran a simple stability test n this MOTHERFUCKER FRIED MY BOARD. Literally. I'm runnin phenom II 965 BE, msi 790fx gd70, ocz amd 4gb 1600 ram, xfx 1gb gddr5 juniper graphics card, corsair 750 watt psu, wd 1tb cav. black hd, haf 922 case... system shut down shortly after I started the test, tried to reboot got nothing, then I got it to boot for a min. and flames literally shot out from my board near where the psu connector. I was an Intel and Nvidia fan. My old CPU had an E6300 and an 8600GT. I just want to say I upgraded to an AMD Phenom II X4 920 (couldn't afford BE 940 :P) and 2 CF 4830 1GB. My system performance is unbelievable.

Right now I am running this Overdrive Utility and seeing how much more I can get.

uninstall your grafix drivers and amd overdrive, then install amd overdrive 3.0 from amd-game [dot] com. once amd overdrive is installled do NOT launch it... restart your pc,...install your latest grafix drivers ... weather its nvidia or ati... then restart again...

now amd overdrive should work... iv had the same problem many times with my 940 phenom II and my 9850 black edition and this works for me everytime.

My personnal limit was 3.5GHz and it was very unstable.

I dropped back to 3.37GHz and it's running very stable and nicely.

OverDrive comes with the Phenom series of AMD Processors, weather you have XP or Vista, doesn't matter. If you haven't got a Phenom, you can use "CPU-Z clockgen", this comes without safety warnings/recommendations though.

I don't know, I'm guessing a CD perhaps, you can download it too it's only 5.5mb, but that could be a trimmed version. I don't mean to betray AMD but, you can get the Q6600 for around the same price as the latest Phenoms, but the Q6600's are really powerful too, and they're a year old too, AMD's releasing some tech stuff later on this year though!

Why do people take CPU/GPU performance so personally? I'm a sys admin and have been all my working life. When we bulk buy CPUs we use 3DMark on a range of INTEL, AMD and in the old days IBM's, CYRIX. A few years ago when we put AMD's up against INTEL'S we found the results very similar, but me and my colleagues all agreed that the AMD's performed better on the apps we use. The moral of the story is. CPUs CAN be judged by benchmarks, but professional opinion counts for more than raw maths tests.

AMD's Phenom is the better option when you're going to use multithreaded apps. If you buy a quadcore, then Phenom is the better option for multithreading. If single-threaded apps is your thing, then use Core2 duo or quad.

Phenom sucks compared to core2 quad. Even core2 duo beats it at 3ghz vs. a 2.6ghz phenom. The only thing barcelona takes over intel is in Highly dense server environments because you can put most to work together in large numbers because of the scalability. In a regular platform they get slaughtered even up to 16 cores is not enough. Intel still wins in 16 cores. You need 100s of cores to see the difference in power savings and scalability.

And it's true that 8800GT and HD3870 are cheaper and in some cases (as i know) HD3870 is better. i'll buy a new computer and i was trying to decide whether to buy 8800GT or HD3870. But now my choice is HD3870. I believe that it will show its real performance in a near future, because it uses a newer tech than 8800GT. (DX10.1 / SM 4.1 ...) 8800GT is also a good card though.

when I overclocked amd u cannot enable dynamic cpu frequency to save energy because it would crash in render. This means AMD brought out a 2.4 and made it overclockable to 3ghz because they knew it wasn't a stable cpu. Intel quadcore's start at 3ghz..they are overclockable too. I don't need a new cpu now but still is a very week come back from amd even with the low price since intel is low priced too and better.

do u mean the position of the pci-e slots? thats true. only MSI can hold 4 dual slot cards. But i guess if ur not into xtreme overclocking with liquid nitrogen and stuff, they're both almost the same perf wise. and cheaper too as u say

Ofcourse not. I hope you've been sleeping too little tonight. I would even suppose this is with 4xAA and 16xAF considering I get 6000pts on a 2900XT, Athlon 6000+ and 2GB mem. A overclocked Phenom and Crossfire HD3870 would have problem scoring three times better than that as the HD3870 AA-engine is 20% faster even on the first BETA-drivers.
