My heart is still wrenched to see all these videos. The damage is so sudden & inconceivable. So many deaths. So many lost. May the gods of luck smile more favorably now on the victims of this awful catastrophe.
With 15, 10, maybe only 5 min to get to high ground or a place of safety, why are so many people WALKING?! As if they were out for a stroll! Not until they can actually SEE the water, do they begin to run & then they keep stopping & looking back! WTF?! If I heard tsunami sirens where I live (& I live on a tsunami-prone coast, too!), I'd be running (or driving) AWAY (not parallel to) the coast as if pursued by demons from Hell. Is this some sort of cultural thing? We must not show fear?
@AlternateViewpoint i too would say this now, but i simply cannot imagine watching something that i dare to be impossible. normal life expierience tells me 5m above ground and nothing can hit me.well....
@armatus99 Ah, yes. Research has shown that humans have great difficulty understanding the scope of a disaster or the inherent danger until it is over. Even so, one would've thought that the hideous catastrophe in Indonesia & the surrounding coasts, only a few years ago, might've made people swifter. I know that I live 50 m above sea level about 2 miles from the Pacific coast & I am a little afraid that it may not be high enough if the San Andreas Fault really slips.
@armatus99 Just to be sure, I have a plan to load cats in car & drive uphill. Though, the cats will be lucky if I can catch them after a big quake & such a disruption to their world.
What you must consider is that Tsunami warnings and earthquakes are something they have in huge numbers each year in Japan. It is one of the most active areas in the world. After a number of times it just becomes a rutine and people stop thinking about it very much. Besides... This is one of the biggest earthquakes ever witnessed. It even changed the rotation of the earth itself, not by much and not so much that it will have and impact.
