@donotsaycheese You have highlighted the key line in the song - I think this is Tim Finn's best ever song - both deeply spiritual and utterly physical - which is where life happens for all of us, whether we recognize the dichotomy or not. And it's such a beautiful melody.....
@DarklingStar1969 ... thank you... when i re-read myself... i released that i just think too much... seriously... it's just a "wide open mouth" music... Radiohead were openly fan of Crowded House at the time of the recording of "Ok Computer" .... it's just an exemple of the influences of this album... and... ok computer is less "tribal" than crowded house.... until fine young canibals enter the show... eh eh
I'm sure that most children in the world will be amazed by this rich music...as if a caravan of weird and passionate gypsies stop at the center of each village for a trancendental bohemian show... for this music children can be potentially delighted...(even beyond the Michael Jackson phenomenon !) ... it's just a question of vision and ears ... apparently nobody gives Crowded House a chance to be really heard by the new (disturbed) generation...
when I first listened this song I was 16 and since this song is leitmotif of my life I know it's stupid but there are things unexplained I think that his timbre matters a lot. good vocals + beautiful music - that's it, I like the fact that few people like this band
the end is so fabullous... the guitar fuzz ...the bass turn as a wheel... and the vocals ...are extatic... it's like a modern version of dennis wilson!
@demonizyt there is no better album. Together Alone is the greatest album of all time. Well, Together Alone and Bon Jovi's first album. I'm kidding. Just a little hair metal humor.
Much better than the ones they do now, though. Most videos today only show rappers wearing big chains round their necks, driving expensive cars and having girls with their asses and tits showing dancing around them. Whatever happened to originality/creativity, I wonder...
Yes he definitely does. No other human has ever touched my spirit the way that Neil has. No one. Everyone says my voice is the female version of his. We're strangely connected in some way...
i've been listening to these guys for 20 years.sense the splitenz, neils solo stuff is good too,20 years later it's timeless, even as new music comes out.
You can't beat this. What a fucken fantastic song. I don't care what album it went on. It was written! God bless you Neil. You are my fucken gem my boy!
Very shocked! It's one of their best songs and it was a single to boot, so one would think that it warrants inclusion on their "Best Of" compilation. Oh well.
Not shocked that it was left off - but I take the point; it's one of my favourite CH tracks - depending how moody I am feeling. Opening line is an all time classic and my eyes often fill when it hits the minute mark
Yeah! Maybe Neil didn't like it as much as he liked some of his other songs, but i find that highly unlikely as it is a great song. Keyboardist and guitarist Mark Hart named it as his favourite Crowded House song
:-) Never the less, this is the song my husband and I put on our rings to...ha ha... We did it a year after we got married and it was a warm, full and intimate experience... I didn't think of Neil at that point;-0
the "nails in my feet" is in no reference to Christianity ; it's in relation to gardening sandles with spikes in the soles that you can wear to aerate your lawn (I had read that in an interview that Neil did). but if you only have seen the video, it's not surprising that one would assume that the inspiration for the song had to do with religion.
"Total surrender, your touch is so tender, your skin is like water on a burning beach, and it brings me relief" Another classic Neil Finn line. It gives me goosebumps.
I agree. It's my favorite by Crowded House as well. People get hung up on visuals, I share your view about the video. who cares. It's touching music. "Cast me off one day to lose my inhibitions" goes so well with the music.
yes i do know that neil finn has said that his songs can be interpreted in any way, but this video is so literal it doesnt give the viewer any choice in interpreting it themselves, it instantly becomes a religious metaphor.
and how dare you twist my words and make me into a bad person. as seadave said, theyre just flaky religious themes, that in the end become a bit insulting to religion.
Bad taste? Seriously? Neil has repeatedly said that most of his music isn't literal. People are free to interpet it how they wish. As for the video, it's all imagery. Ever see any other CH videos? How many of them seriously coinside with the song? No many if any, like most artists. If showing religious images is considered bad taste, then freedom of expression is something that must make your blood boil. Really sad.
You said it all. It's shocking to me that more people don't know about CH and/or Neil Finn. No finer Songwriter around. A brilliant song from a brilliant band.
"Your skin is like water on a burning beach...and it brings me relief". What utter poetry! LOVE this song, never seen the video before now...found the video a bit unimaginative to be honest, but thrilled to bits the guys are back together and touring!
Gosh, I never even knew that was a single! It's one of my favourite Crowded House songs. I'm 37, from the UK and to be honest, I'm completely in the dark on that.
(Oh, and please let's not argue about Woodface - it too was awesome!)
And bear in mind Steve Martin said that talking about music is like dancing about architecture :)
