  • i thought he was gona get electrocuted when he smacked the battery for some reason :P

  • Or at least my grade..

  • THANKS! you saved my life!!!

  • OOOOHHHHH.... so this is what its supposed to sound like when your teacher doesnt speak chopped up ass english.. thank you. i get it

  • Where were you all my life?! You actually made this lesson fun for me!

  • thank youuuu i finally got it , my teacher is just horrible i couldnt learn anything

  • Thanyou Thankyou THANKYOU! I love your videos and I simply CANNOT get enough chemistry and these videos are wonderful!

  • love the video! very helpful thanx:)

  • OH MY GOSH. I LOVE YOU.

  • YOU ARE MY NEW BEST FRIEND. 10X BETTER THAN ANY TEACHER!!!

  • thanks! My teacher just told us to learn the whole unit "by our selves" :(

  • you make learning chemistry fun! :D thank you.

  • why are you so amazing? :')

  • looks like its hot as hell there

  • I laughed so hard when he started singing "All by My(it)self. Thanks!

  • oh my gosh thank you soooo much. my high school chem teacher confuses herself...needless to say she can't teach

  • Damn i wish this guy was my chemistry teacher, i would learn a hell of a lot more!!!

  • Thank You! My chemistry 101 teach at University of Penn can't teach! (or speak English)

  • Nice tutorial, thanks. Why not talk about peroxides though? "Oxygen is always -2" almost screwed me over on my last test.

    Either way, nice tutorial!

  • that was very helpfull. thanks for putting out this video.

  • Thank you for this helpful video! Thank goodness for all of you Chemists that post these videos to help out us audio visual learners! Much better than what any Chemistry text book could do! :)

  • Thankyousir

  • best chem techer

  • Thank you very much for the help sir.

  • Thanks for the tutorial, it helped alot in understanding oxidisation. Thank you so much :)

  • Thank you so much your video helped me alot :D I wish you were my chemistry teacher

  • lol phosphorous joke got me I love you now hahahhaa

  • elements by themself - forever a lone

  • thanks alot this really helped :)

  • mark are you continuing to post up more chemistry lecture videos?? please say yes!!!

  • @KillerZero259 Been too crazy this year to post anything new, unfortunately.

  • This was very helpful. Thanks Mark.

  • YOU ARE AWESOME I FUQING LOVE YOU I FINALLY UNDERSTAND

  • Thank you, I wish my chem prof was more like you

  • haha fuckin awesome dude

  • Dang, This gentleman seems to be an extraordinary great teacher! Awesome =)

  • thank you!

  • You are an amazing instructor!

  • amazinggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg

  • Hey Mark, You need to update your shtick. Even college kids aren't going to get the Eric Carmen reference.

  • @Maafa1619 Believe it or not, I pulled a "Respect My Authoritah!" on my students this past week and they were just rolling with laughter. They still get it. :)

  • @MarkRosengarten That's not really surprising. "South Park" is still in production. Easy listening hits from the early 1970s are another matter entirely.

  • @Maafa1619 You mean the "all by itself" thing? They don't have to know it. It's music, it's a tune, they can sing it. It's how I make my 30 music videos work.

  • @MarkRosengarten Oh, now I see why you mentioned South Park. Yeah. Eric Carmen (not Cartman) sang "All By Myself." I'll take your word about kids appreciating the tune... .but it's funnier if you recognize the song.

  • @Maafa1619 South Park is still around

  • I'm about to go to Chemistry class. I didn't do the reading, because I have a test on the previous material and that's where I put my time. Thankfully, I can watch this and have some idea what today's lecture will be about.

  • man, i have been so stuck with chemistry and looking all over youtube. when i found this everything suddenly made sense. thank you so much! will now have to watch all your other videos!!!

  • Thank youuuuu!

  • this was a good video! You're a good teacher

  • thank you very much!

  • Mark, you are most definitely the best chemistry teacher I've ever had

  • thank you sir

  • Hey dude, I am in HS thanks.

  • I don't know if I'm missing something but aren't rule 1 and rule 3 saying the same thing? Are you saying that if the element can be found on the Periodic Table the charge is zero? OR The charge is listed on the table? Sorry if it's a silly question but it just doesn't make sense in my flustered brain!

  • @babs0128 Watch it again. Rule 1 says that if an element is NOT IN A COMPOUND, then it has NO CHARGE. This is because in an unbonded atom the # of electrons = the # of protons. If an element IS in a compound, it is there because electrons have been transferred. One element becomes +, the other -. Look up the oxidation numbers of these ions on the Periodic Table or use one of the other rules to determine the oxidation number.

  • @MarkRosengarten Wow that was quick! Thank you that makes more sense. We were give a list of 9 rules and it said O can be -1 (if peroxide) or -2 (in all other compounds). If I work the problem out with -2 will it come out the same just having more steps or do I really need to remember the above rule?

I kind of feel like I have been feed to wolves taking a Chem class after 20years since HS (plus I never took Chem)! Your tutorials have been a life saver! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

  • i love this video it is really helping me a lot

  • thanks

  • Omg. I actually understand now. Thank you so much for posting this.

  • so easy to understand!

  • I never leave a comment for this type of Tutorial . but you are awesome . The best . Thank you

  • Thanks for the vid

  • Great tutorial! But I got the impression you were the kid whose toys ended up broken within a week.

  • We need more teachers like you....

  • YOU SIR ARE A LEGEND!

  • simple for finding the oxidation number for N in Fe(NO3)2

    do 2+2X+(6*-2)=0

2 is the charge of Fe

2x is the charge of N ( its 2x because you have to multiple it by the subscript (N2O6)

and 6*-2 is for the O

  • thank you...

  • Thanks for helping me with my test tomorrow !

  • You taught me more in one sentence than my chem teacher could in one period.

  • Oh my gosh, thank you so much! Help me understand and prepare for my exam tomorrow.. thanks a bunch! :)

  • your an amazing teacher dude, keep it up:)

  • good goin teach!

  • I love the fact that he isn't boring or monotone. He kept my attention for most of the video and I understand ON a little bit better! WOOH!

  • You're my hero! So much better than my teacher.

  • All by itselff... it has no charge, all by itself xD lmfao

  • OMFG because of you I aced my chem test

    best teacher ever

  • wow! you make chemistry look so easy!!

  • omg u should be my teacher cause mine doesnt know how to explain. two days and i didnt understand. 10min with u and im an expert. thanx alot.

  • Mark, you are the best teacher in EVER!!!! i honestly love you from the bottom of my heart!!!! i thank you so much for all the help you've provided for lost students like myself who are forced to study using crapy chemistry explinations that make no sense! A MILLION THANKS! <3

  • Hey thanks this is awesome!!! Finally i get it :-)

  • OMG!! Finally I got this! I have read the section for oxidizing numbers over, and over and with no success. You made it SO easy to understand. Thank you!!!!

  • You saved my homeschooled ignorance.

  • when people ask me who my chemistry teacher is, i just say mr. Rosengarten

  • Is the highest and lowest possible O.N can only be found in a periodic chart like yours or is there a way to determine it

  • @exgoddess

I know! There is a way to do it but I can't find it anywhere! My teacher makes absolutely no sense when she tries to explain it.

  • You are seriously the best Chem teacher ever. Teach at Purdue!

  • @lizacorinne But I don't know anything about chickens!!!!! :) Thanks.

  • THANKSSS! SO MUCHHH

  • seriously wish you were my teacher =[ ...

  • Thanks this video helped me understand oxidation numbers alot better then my teacher taught me

  • What is that list called? That showed how many types of oxidation numbers an element can have?

  • @henrybergstrom It's the New York State chemistry reference tables. Google it...it's a great resource if you're not in NY.

  • Wow you saved my chemistry grade!!! Thank you so much for this!

  • Who are you?

I mean really? Where did you come from?

    What color is your cape?

  • much easier to understand than the way my professor taught it. you saved my midterm grade, thank you!

  • amazing! :)) its indeed very informative. :) THANK YOU.

  • This is way more helpful than the Chem study building on my campus. :D Thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to teach this! I have a midterm in my Chem144 class tomorrow, and you're making everything seem so easy!

  • you saved my academic life!!! i have a midterm tomorrow and you just made oxidation more simple =]

    THANK YOU!! =]

  • Thank you! You are a very good instructor. Clear concise information broken down well, easily digestible, and engagingly presented. A good example for other instructors.

  • electrizzity :P good video

  • Thanks for these vids. I wish i would have found them earlier! You make it seems almost easy.

  • This video is great! :D Thanks a lot!!!... By the way, Where can I get a period table like yours ?

  • @therino1 Google "New York State Chemistry Reference Tables"! :)

  • i love you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH!

  • OMG Wow I just learned this in 9 mins rather than 3 hours lol. Thank you so much because I knew that I could find a video on this with a better explanation of how to figure this out. You literally make me want to learn and you are way better than my professor.

  • Man can you plz come teach at my school?

  • Now I know what oxidation numbers are and how they are calculated but what is oxidation?

  • @andresblazeit420 View my tutorials on oxidation and reduction!

  • You are an excellent teacher, thank you for posting this-- so much more helpful than my General Chemistry text.

  • THANK YOU :)

  • tons of help.. thanks a lot :)

  • Sir, I would like to say that your teaching is exemplary. I attend an upper class preparatory school, and your teaching style (expressive voice, the beautiful singing, play-by-play problem solving) in my honest opinion rivals any teacher I've met. I write this comment to you in gratitude, because in barely 9 minutes you have effectively taught me more than what I would've struggled with in an hour.

  • OMG , i wish professors could understand the pain of the students.....I wish all the professors at my college were like you!!!!!

  • Oh wow....

    Singing therapy is great..!!!! :)

  • GREAT TEACHER...MAKES IT FUN AND EASY....WHY CANT THEY ALL BE LIKE THIS????

  • WOW! I love you !!!! Your videos are very helpful sir! Thank you!

  • you're good, you have a nice speed of teaching, allows one to fully understand.

  • I was having a lot trouble with oxidation numbers but this video helped me soooo much! Thank you!

  • or is that phosphori?? hahaha

  • wow thnx for making life much easier!!!

  • This is absolutely brilliant. Chemistry has never been easier. Your videos are highly appreciated. Much thanks!!

  • THAT WAS THE SHIT & THE URINE - (read - compliment!) - FUCKIN A+ MAN.. - FOR SOME REASON THIS CONCEPT WAS EASILY EXPLAINED IN THIS CLIP & NOW I KNOW IT.. BUT I WASN'T BALE TO GRASP THIS SIMPLE CONCEPT IN 2D(reading) BC OF POOR STEP BY STEP EXPLAINATION.. BRAVO MATE - GOOD SH*T! - BRONX, NY

  • I cannot actually thank you eneough. My exam is on Friday, (it is now wednesday) and have been trying to revise this for ages! I have never got it until now, thank you sooo much!! :)

  • Wow amazing!!

My teacher knows how to teach BUT my problem is that i cant seem to understand things the first time... and he doesnt repeat it, it doesnt click in my head UNTIL i go home and study or read more information about it.. Recently i have been going on Youtube as a way for me to study and this helps ALOT! thank you soooo much.
