Separation of church and state is very important for resolving international issues, broadening perspectives, and thinking outside the box.

Would opponents of rabbis in combat prefer that Jews fight UNHOLY wars, i.e., wars that do NOT conform to commandments of the Torah!?!
One example of righteous [holy] Jewish combat - in post biblical times - is that warfare is NOT mandatory. Naturally then, wars should only be fought to save Israel, i.e., the land and people.
A IDF rabbi's job is to make sure that combat operations are more than legal. Meaning, IDF soldiers must endeavor to adhere to Torah ethics while engaging the enemy.

Why not have rabbis in your army if you have Chaplains in all of Europe's? Did they not preach that the men were fighting a noble war during WW2, or Vietnam, or any other war in history.
