i have a question guys...i am unbiased to car manufacturers, i've always loved the looks of vw, but was too afraid to buy one because of "reliability" issues. and so i stuck with japanese. There's such a German following. die hard fans or owners. my question is..is it really a huge difference and worth the money buying this car rather than the quicker higher performing STI? two different cars but...

@GreezyLu ... The only thing to do is go test-drive both cars. Reliability is not an issue. I've owned nothing but Japanese and German cars, and I've never had a single problem with either one.

Not everyone wants to red line it from their drive to the end of their street.

This car, in terms of sheer quality and engineering is a absolutely brilliant. The downside is that it's bloody expensive, but VW don't care... their target audience for this car will pay up...

It is completely different than sitting in your Cobalt, which you may love, but others would like a different type of experience in their car....

its a double clutch gearbox called a dsg with paddles on the steering wheel, so its quicker than a manual gearbox to 60mph

Something like that. The stick has a + and - position and display changes to 6 5 4 3 2 1 if you are in manual mode, like a motorbike. There's no clutch-pedal.

But it's a little bit restrictive, in order to protect the engine the gear changes one up before revs pass the redline, and when you are near the redline, you can't change down.

if you don't unterstand the TSI concept: These 270hp arise out of a small 2.0l engine with small mileage, 2 litres less than its forerunner. This engine was not made for the racetrack.

Apart from that, it's not all about 0-60.

But I agree with you when it comes to pricing.

widowedeight please relax a bit, no one is having a go. vw's are always a bit on the lardy side due to having about 10 airbags & high grade plastic etc. look if you want to buy the cheaper car (and you did) thats fine, but it is the 'cheaper' car mate, the reason this car is more than your cobalt is its more complicated with irs and 4motion etc. We have the cobalt ss over here called the astra vxr, it's a great car for what it is and for the record I drive a diesel bmw so what do in know, lol.

0-100Km/h(0-62mph) in 5.7 sec without DSG and 5.5 sec with DSG. =)

Vmax is 250Km/h (155mph) and it's limited.

A piece of shit? Yeah that's probably why it got the NCAP safety rating as most safe hatchback of 2010 & most reliable. Just one jealous kid that can't afford either of these cars lol.
