Is there any good ethical justification for having children in the first place?

Considering how risky it is, there are so many things that can go wrong, and there's no way for the unborn to agree to any of these risks.

It's gambling with the welfare of what you are creating... the only way having children would be ethically neutral in my opinion would be if one could guarantee 100% that the person would have a good life and would have chosen to be born in retrospect.

@laffer35 the only way you will know is if you give life to that sentient being. it can decide if life has a positive value, once it has experienced it. if it assigns a negative value, it can kill itself.

but since most people would certainly attribute a positive value to their life, the risk of that is low.

Killing oneself should not be something anyone should have to do, it's ridiculously hard, even if one hates life, illogical as that may sound.

Also, in order to even reach the point of wanting to kill oneself, one must already have gone through a lot of suffering so the damage has already been done.

@laffer35 its actually really easy to kill yourself with the right support. but thats another issue. we can establish that a vast majority of humans dont assign a negative value to life, so the counter argument is relevant only to the vast minority who do assign negative value.

if you assign negative value to life, thats fine. but if you really did then you could end it (again, quite easy if you are sincere).

The meaning of life is whatever the indivual chooses. Not what some boogie man in the sky leaves for us to figure out. Just as who they want to be with, be friends with and the way they think. Secular means that they have the right to do all of these without the brainwashing of organized religion and with full access to the truth as we know it today.
