Well done video. I studied photojournalism under J. Ross Baughman in 1980 and the many issues brought up in this video were indeed discussed in depth in our class. I found Ross to be a thoughtful individual who truly cared about using his camera to affect positive change. Unlike most photojournalists today who tend to run with the pack, he went places others didn't dare and got more effective images as a result.

My father was a Fuzileiro Naval in Angola and Guiné Bissau during 12 years, yes i repeat 12 years, and during that period he testify the best and worst of a war. The point of this video is not to propagate or talk about the war itself. The point is about the ethical principles behind the actual taking of the photographs. Whether or not it was a good thing or a bad thing for Baughman to take these photographs is up to the viewer to decide. It is a bad thing to make photo's and don't write the right contest of the situation. He also made a photo that was set in scene. Of the man with a rope around his neck. This video wasn't done from a political standpoint. It was made only to examine the ethicality of a photojournalist's work. Baughman had been criticized for not preventing murder and instead photographing it. But as a journalist, he had to remain objective. He was there to document human rights abuses and bring awareness to the situation. If he had interfered, would there even be a story to tell? He wasn't acting politically, he was simply faithful to a code of ethics set out for journalists.

The bigger issue here is that Baumanns pictures were mostly likely faked using african workers and Rhodesian reservists. Note that they all show the threat of potential violence, and not the results of actual violence. Compare these pictures to other photos showing the realitly of war and they are incredibly tame.

Baughman's fault wasn't taking photos of the conflict in Zimbabwe - it was the spin put on them by the media who saw the conflict as white racist oppression of poor African people. Rhodesian soldiers did not by policy, de facto or otherwise, "slaughter villagers". The men in pushup position were terrs captured during battle and were not shot by the soldier with the pistol - although they may have thought they would be unless they talked. War is not without brutality or for the faint of heart.
