Well done video. I studied photojournalism under J. Ross Baughman in 1980 and the many issues brought up in this video were indeed discussed in depth in our class. I found Ross to be a thoughtful individual who truly cared about using his camera to affect positive change. Unlike most photojournalists today who tend to run with the pack, he went places others didn't dare and got more effective images as a result.
These blacks were not innocents. They were murderous communist terrorists, child killers. Rough measures against such people, are morally legitimate. You should inform yourselves of the complete story, rather allowing yourselves to be brainwashed by propagandists.
The photographs are interesting, but the filth these stupid children are reciting on behalf of liberal academics from low-budget US universities is nothing short of shameful. I love it when these kids take their politics from Fidel and their money from Daddy, raging against the injustices of the world while getting a Jamba Juice on Hollywood Blvd.
This Is the biggest load of bullshit that I have ever watched and heard. There was A war journalist by the name of Lord Salisbury who reported on the war many times and subsequently lost his life by the terrorists that this un informed person claims to be the truth are utter lies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PLease, tell the truth behind this photo. My father was a Fuzileiro Naval in Angola and Guiné Bissau during 12 years, yes i repeat 12 years, and during that period he testify the best and worst of a war. Today it's very simple, for those who never have to live a war, to point there finger. I imagine what kind of life have the african people now under the little man and person Mugabe. Publish that!
The point of this video is not to propagate or talk about the war itself. The point is about the ethical principles behind the actual taking of the photographs. Whether or not it was a good thing or a bad thing for Baughman to take these photographs is up to the viewer to decide. So for all of you who are just commenting on the war itself, find a more appropriate forum, because your opinions have a right to be heard and this isn't the right place for it. Thanks.
@chartreuseshoes , i understand what you are saying, freedom of media ect, however it might be a good idea to get another view to even this one out, pros/cons of the media ect.
@chartreuseshoes I wiish that the people who made this video would speak proper English, They even speak lousy American. It is a bad thing to make photo's and don't write the right contest of the situation. He also made a photo that was set in scene. Of the man with a rope around his neck. He was a soldier of the RAR and was persuaded to do this, thinking it was a joke. Not knowing the photo was used with a propaganda purpose.
Such absolute bullshit! I see you bear no mention to the mass graves containing the bodies of Matabele slaughtered by Mugabe. Say what you want I would rather live under the Smith government than the Mugabe government
That picture of me teaching this young black men how to do push ups, ain't no crime being committed, the pistol was for their protection so no gay commies would screw them in the arse.
I was Having a drink in Avondale & saw a reporter throwing 'quality street' sweets into some trash bins and all the local black kids were digging in the bins to get them. When I asked what he was doing he replied 'taking pictures of the starving kids in Africa' ... !!! We REAL Rhodesians, Black & White know the truth.
Photo journalists aren't interested in covering the aftermath today. Black rule in Zimbabwe is unimaginably brutal than white rule ever was. What Mugabe and others have given to their own people is misery and fear. Zimbabwe is now no different than the rest of sub Saharan Africa in that is an economic basket case and a shithole.
Most of the stuff that the journos submitted was made up, like in Bulawayo's Makakoba township in the western suburbs. Journos got reject sweets from Arenal sweets, new dust bins off the Municipality Health Dpt. They then took the said items to said township, placed the sweets in the bins, told the kids that there were free sweets for them.
Hell even I as a kid would have jumped at the chance to get free sweets.
Doderman I have to disagree with you. Mugabe is such a meglomaniac he might have been happy to have a photographer document his ultimately successful terror campaign to bring Rhodesia/Zimbabwe back to the stone age.
I've got no criticisms of Baughman, war is hell. Braughman didnt make war on the blessings of European civilization brought to what was then Rhodesia, he just photographed the realities of defending it from a murderous, corrupt, tyrant. A one Robert Mugabe to be percise whose legacy of misery to Africans continues to this day.
What gets me about these peoples view is at 1:16 where the girl takes about white bruitality in Rhodesia and whites slaugtering villagers...in the photo there is a white man and a black man, both RHODESIANS!!! They really dont get it, they think it was a war of colour....if only it and Africa was that simple! Its a disgrace, my dad was in a stick of 5 men, 3 white, 2 black...all Rhodesian, all brothers. They need to know the whole story before they subject us to this bullshit!
you children need to read some history books. and get your facts straight before do things like this vid. or is it that you have bought into the liberal bullshit.
We take umbrage to such false accusations despite what you feel and believe to be evidence of so-called human rights violations. For the record, Mugabe has single handed killed more black people as a black man himself in his 29 years of (miss)rule and has gotten away with it. Head over there today with your camera and see how far you get trying to expose human rights violations. you won't live long to tell the tale. Speak to those who have been there before reporting on some prize winner fool!
"I don't think you have a firm grasp on the reality of the situation. I believe your view is political." that's exactly what I could answer to your response.
I know former Rhodesians who fled Zimbabwe and read books about both sides so what else should I do.
If I want to throw up I just watch "Terrorists in the Rhodesian Bush War" here on youtube because than I can see the sick crimes done by Mugabe and his hench men.
i am an american, a patriot even, but this video is further proof that these students have been force fed garbage for truth, the health, welfare, and education systems were created to control the american people, unhealthy, poor, and uneducated equals people who are easily controlled
If you want to see what black nationalists did to their own people check out 'terrorists in the Rhodesian bush' youtube video. Argument aside; reality shows what conflict in africa means: rwanda, burundi, darfur, congo, liberia, present-day zimbabwe - get the picture?
Past is the past OR IS IT? photos taken of Salisbury of the past and photos taken of present day Harare. whats different the amount of pepole on the street in the old compaired to today, its almost no one on the streets. So they had more FREEDOM under so called rascist then under their own rule! plus it hasn't expanded any in how many years? While the rest of the world pays thugs to run the place wow! we should have NEVER TURNED OUR BACKS TO Rhodesia!
This video wasn't done from a political standpoint. It was made only to examine the ethicality of a photojournalist's work. Baughman had been criticized for not preventing murder and instead photographing it. But as a journalist, he had to remain objective. He was there to document human rights abuses and bring awareness to the situation. If he had interfered, would there even be a story to tell? He wasn't acting politically, he was simply faithful to a code of ethics set out for journalists.
I think that whoever made this should have actually done some proper research as there facts are all fucked up .What about the whites that were being murderd for being white .Before the Americans try and make themselves out to be the saviors of the world they must think of what they did to the Indians they slaughtered them by the thousands and there land stolen .The yanks are fuck all special .wankers must get there facts right before posting shit .
The bigger issue here is that Baumanns pictures were mostly likely faked using african workers and Rhodesian reservists. Note that they all show the threat of potential violence, and not the results of actual violence. Compare these pictures to other photos showing the realitly of war and they are incredibly tame.
That woman and the guy who took the photo's is talking shit! i fucking hate americans! the whites were trying to look after the rhodesian nationals!!!! they dont know shit, and their own country invades other countrys for oil and the better of themselves. my dad fought in the war and i know at least 4 black Rhodesians who would be completely ashemed of this, thier fathers fought against the terrorists too, and would tell these american wankers to stop talking shit!
I wasn't taking about them, 'The Crippled Eagles' were amazing and I have so much respect for them. I'm sorry i was a little harsh, but I was angry at the general western view, and these people.
every time i think about how the united states (my nation) stood by and did nothing to help rhodesia, it makes me sick. people like carter, kissenger, andrew young and the liberals in britain are the real bastards that should burn in hell. rhodesia was a great and brave nation. im sorry for what the cowards in the west did. it was a disgrace.... the children who made this vid need to get a clue. peace to you,, and long live rhodesia.

Right on! But don't waste your anger on american college kids, just take solace in the fact, that they could find Rhodesia on the world map in the first place.
I think he wouldn't have been allowed to do it by the other side in this conflict.
So he made himself a political tool of ZANU and ZAPU. The ethics of this are boring to argue but I would suggest that perhaps he caused harm by telling half a story.
